OFFICIAL 2019 Training Camp & Preseason: News & Tidbits Thread (1 Viewer)

The Athletic's Vic Tafur reports fifth-rounder Hunter Renfrow has "dusted" Ryan Grant in the slot receiver battle in training camp.

This was the expectation all along. Renfrow has big fans in coach Jon Gruden and OC Greg Olson. Set to turn 24 this year, Renfrow is on the older side for a rookie. He's also neither big nor fast with subpar measurables, but Renfrow wins with strong hands and a willingness to do the dirty work. Tafur expects Antonio Brown to play in the slot quite a bit, with Tyrell Williams and J.J. Nelson on the outside, so there likely won't be enough to make Renfrow fantasy-viable. Meanwhile, Grant is dangerously close to falling out of the league altogether.

The San Jose Mercury-News confirms fifth-round Raiders WR Hunter Renfrow has a "legitimate shot" at No. 3 duties.

Jerry McDonald's report comes the same day The Athletic's Vic Tafur said that Renfrow has "dusted" Ryan Grant thus far in camp. We already knew coach Jon Gruden was going to give the benefit of the doubt to his elderly rookie, and the Clemson product appears to be justifying it. The best Renfrow could hope for behind target hog Antonio Brown and deep threat Tyrell Williams is deeper PPR league value.

Coach Bruce Arians singled out RB Dare Ogunbowale as a player who is having a "fantastic" training camp.

"[He’s] got really good vision [and] good blitz pick-up. He’s really impressing us," Arians continued. This backfield is far from settled. Most of the talk has centered around Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones, but earning praise from Arians is a nice notch in Ogunboawale's belt, especially getting praised for his blitz pickups. Being able to step up and protect the quarterback is a quick way to earn the trust of coaches and see playing time. Ogunbowale (5'11/205) played his college ball at Wisconsin. He has zero NFL carries as he enters Year 3.

Brian Hill rushed 11 times for 57 yards, adding two catches for -2 yards and one score in Atlanta's 14-10 loss to the Broncos in the Hall of Fame game.

Initially thought to be battling rookie Qadree Ollison for the team's "big back" role, Hill outright out-dueled Ito Smith in Atlanta's first showcase of the 2019 season. Hill (6'1/219) flashed strength in lowering his head and trucking for extra yards on one play while showing pass-catching chops in hauling in the team's only receiving touchdown of the evening. Smith merely averaged 2.0 YPC on three totes following an underwhelming rookie year. It's obviously early, but this has suddenly become a camp battle to monitor behind the Falcons' clear-cut 1A back Devonta Freeman.

Calvin Watkins @calvinwatkins

I thought Dak Prescott was much better today than he was the previous two practices. Jason Witten with two TD receptions and Jaylon Smith had two sacks, Daniel Wise with a TFL and Kavon Frazier was pretty active today.

Other practice observations:

🏃🏽‍♂️💨 TE Evan Engram looks really good. Deadly with YAC

⚠️ DeAndre Baker up and down of late. Beaten deep (even tho inc.) by Cody Latimer. Life not easy for rookie CBs.

⬆️ Rookie TE C.J. Conrad continues to shine, even w/a drop. Can block + catch.

If I had to pick five Cowboys players who are having the most badass camps so far, they’d be:

- Xavier Woods

- Maliek Collins

- Michael Gallup

- Jaylon Smith

- Reggie Davis

Thoughts from Bills camp:

  1. Josh Allen is more comfortable & every player raves about his toughness & leadership.
  2. This secondary is loaded. Talent + depth.
  3. So many new faces on OL. I think they’ll improve as the season goes along.
  4. John Brown will be top target.

takeaways from Giants camp

  1. Eli is the unquestioned starter.
  2. Buy Evan Engram stock.
  3. Defense needs big year from Lorenzo Carter. He has intriguing traits.
  4. They have a quiet confidence. Enjoying lack of national attention.
  5. Excited to see how they use Jabril s

Faust for President!

No, Wait . Hold it. Forget that. Would take him away from his FBG posts.

Or would it?
🤔

If Trump can be president with the minimal time commitment he spends on presidential activities - I would be fine as he tweets more than I post here on the message boards.

I am flattered but it would be a substantial reduction in pay.

According to Scott Bordow of The Athletic, it's "clear" that Larry Fitzgerald, Christian Kirk and sixth-round rookie KeeSean Johnson are the Cardinals' top three receivers.

The Cardinals listed former first-round pick Kevin White as a starter on their initial depth chart but that listing was probably based on seniority. Johnson appears to be the obvious No. 3 in Arizona with fellow rookies Andy Isabella and Hakeem Butler both working behind him. Isabella has reportedly "dropped too many passes" at camp while Butler has also had issues with "holding onto the ball." Bordow named Fitzgerald, Kirk, Johnson, Isabella and Butler roster "locks," leaving White, Damiere Byrd, Pharoah Cooper and Trent Sherfield to fight it out for the Cardinals' final two wide receiver spots.
