***Official 2025 Pro Cycling Thread*** - This year a Grand Prize!!! (2 Viewers)

I watched the women's and men's Stade Bianche today. The women's race was awesome, with that final climb less than 1 km from the finish deciding it. The men's was cool with Pogacar's crash then attack, but he broke away so predictably after catching Pidcock that it was a bit anticlimactic.

All-Rounders (GC Contenders)

1. Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) - ~28 points
• A proven stage race winner, excels in climbing and time trials. Likely targeting GC.
2. Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) - ~20 points
• Defending champion, strong in mountains and TTT with a top team.

Climbers

1. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) - ~16 points
• Consistent Paris-Nice performer, suited to medium and high mountains.
2. Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) - ~14 points
• Young climber with stage-winning potential in tough terrain.

Sprinters

1. Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) - ~18 points
• Can win hilly sprints (Stage 1) and survive some climbs.
2. Arnaud Démare (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) - ~14 points
• Pure sprinter for flatter stages (e.g., Stage 2 or 5).

Unclassified (Value Picks)

1. Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility) - ~10 points
• Versatile breakaway rider, can sprint or climb for stage points.
2. Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) - ~8 points
• Strong support rider, potential breakaway or assist points.
3. Andrea Bagioli (Lidl-Trek) - ~6 points
• Young talent, likely to chase stages or assist Pedersen.

Estimated Total Cost: ~134 points (needs adjustment)

This exceeds the 100-point budget, so you’d need to swap a high-cost rider (e.g., Roglič) for a cheaper GC option like João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates, ~18 points) or adjust unclassified picks downward. A refined lineup might look like:

• GC: Jorgenson (20), Almeida (18)
• Climbers: Gaudu (16), Buitrago (14)
• Sprinters: Pedersen (18), Démare (14)
• Unclassified: Cort (10), Wright (8), Bagioli (6)
• Total: 98 points

I just spent 20 minutes educating ChatGPT and it's getting worse. I'm not worried on AI taking over anytime soon based on this....

Total: 154 credits

This team combines high-value GC contenders like Ayuso, Yates, Bilbao, and Gaudu with proven stage winners like Van Der Poel and Ganna. There’s a balance between mountains, time trials, sprints, and breakaways with some budget-friendly picks like Skujiņš and Velasco to complete the roster.

These riders are expected to perform consistently across grand tours and one-day races, maximizing your points potential. This structure should give you the best chance at winning!

budget is 100, not 154

Apologies for the confusion! Given that the budget is 100 credits, here's an optimized team that fits the budget while maximizing the potential for winning points in Velogames.

Revised Winning Team (100 Credits Budget):

  1. Juan Ayuso (24) - UAE Team Emirates
    • A strong GC contender with excellent climbing ability. He's likely to score big, especially in mountain stages and the overall classification.
  2. David Gaudu (16) - Groupama-FDJ
    • A solid climber with the potential for strong finishes in mountain stages. He is one of the better GC riders for a budget-friendly price.
  3. Pello Bilbao (16) - Bahrain Victorious
    • Bilbao is a reliable all-rounder who can deliver strong performances in both mountain stages and GC. A great value pick.
  4. Mathieu Van Der Poel (14) - Alpecin-Deceuninck
    • Van Der Poel is perfect for the flatter, sprint-heavy stages, plus he can perform well in one-day races and punchy finishes.
  5. Simone Velasco (8) - XDS Astana Team
    • Velasco is a good value pick who can score points in breakaways, especially on hilly stages. A solid pick for a budget rider.
  6. Rui Oliveira (8) - UAE Team Emirates
    • A useful option for a budget-friendly sprinter who can pick up points on flat stages. His UAE team can provide support, which helps his chances.

For the 6th time, you have to have 9 riders at 100 credits

Winning Team (9 Riders, 100 Credits Budget):

  1. Juan Ayuso (24) - UAE Team Emirates
    • Strong GC contender, great for high finishes in mountains and overall standings.
  2. David Gaudu (16) - Groupama-FDJ
    • Consistent climber, with the potential for strong mountain stage results and overall GC performance.
  3. Pello Bilbao (16) - Bahrain Victorious
    • Solid all-rounder, good for both stage results and GC, particularly in mountainous terrain.
  4. Mathieu Van Der Poel (14) - Alpecin-Deceuninck
    • Sprint stages, punchy climbs, and one-day races are where Van Der Poel excels.
  5. Simone Velasco (8) - Astana
    • Breakaway and hilly stages specialist; a good budget pick with potential for surprises.
  6. Rui Oliveira (8) - UAE Team Emirates
    • Budget sprinter with a chance of picking up points in flat stages.
  7. Jonathan Castroviejo (6) - Ineos Grenadiers
    • A strong all-rounder who can contribute in time trials, breakaways, and support in mountainous stages.
  8. Andreas Kron (5) - Lotto Dstny
    • A solid climber and good option for breakaways, a budget-friendly pick who could surprise in the mountains.
  9. Ruben Guerreiro (4) - Movistar Team
    • A climber who can perform in breakaways or mountain stages at a very low price.

I already input the available riders now I'm getting a 5 credit Kron. Already had to boot Bardet.

Flat as a pancake today, should be another bunch sprint finish.

60th Tirreno-Adriatico (Max)

Stronger startlist than Paris-Nice but not a very strong GC group, Ayuso should dominate. Only one player didn't pick him (me), which seems like a bold strategy, we'll see how it works out for him kind of deal.

ITT today - Ayuso and Ganna should finish 1-2.

I had Adam Yates but did an edit last night and switched Yates out for Ayuso, plus a couple of other tweaks.

Dang, I'm always rooting for the breakaway guy. He got to about 2.5 km from the finish before they got him.

It's uncanny how often they are caught with between 1-3 km left. I'm like you, always rooting for the breakaway, but its just inevitable most of the time.

Question for the group: how the heck do you figure out who will do well in a TTT?

Cycling TV presentation is so damned frustrating. We'll watch a 3-man breakaway for 20 minutes and they'll never show the 3 guys' names on the screen. Also, listening to various announcers today try to explain this has been maddening:
The teams get their times based on the first rider to cross the line, not the fourth as is usual in the format. With it being individually timed, all seven riders will get different times on GC as well, rather than a group time as occurs normally.
Granted, that's a confusing setup for someone like me who only cares about GC, but man are they doing a bad job of explaining it. "The whole team gets the time of the first rider, also each individual gets their own time" - ?que?
