I'm a proponent of playing LD on the wing. Sure he's the US's best player, but I think he's more versatile on the wing where he can serve crosses. In fact I like him on the right and DMB on the left pretty nicely. Go with 1 striker up top, and an offensive midfielder behind him (read: Adu) to range all around the midfield, spring DMB or LD on runs or set up a cross coming back into the box for the striker or the opposite winger. This formation up top requires a LOT of out 3 players, namely the attacking central MF, and the two holding/defensive MFs behind him. It's not something that's easily put together, as if any of those 3 have a propensity for losing the ball or not stringing together passes, the offense shuts down. The alternative is to have LD playing behind the striker, and then have DMB further back on the left and someone else on the right. I don't think Adu fits in well there. He's not good enough on D to contribute on the flank, and I don't think he's go the pure speed or crossing ability to be effective out there.LD can play either position, but I like him better on the wing. I think it frees him up to play his game and not worry about the players around him as much. He's got a good workrate when he's on, but can disappear from games. I don't want that right in the middle of the offense, setting up everything.
