***OFFICIAL The Leftovers, New HBO show Thread *** (1 Viewer)

based on recommendations floating around the FFA, I went in for the 2nd season starting last night.

1st episode- whoa... all over the place... but maintained the extremely high production and acting level from the 1st season. Not sure yet wtf is going on, but very intrigued and not eye-rolling or annoyed as I was in the 1st season. yet.

just finished up last. wow... huge upgrade over the first season, which I didn't love. this one was fantastic. I couldn't stop watching.

the acting across the board was fantastic, but every scene with Patty was amazing... so much so that I even transposed her into that little girl and felt those scenes were amazing too. even Liv, who I think is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, but kinda so-so in the acting dept, was extremely good.

I really liked the repetition of music and themes a lot. the pixies, the groundhog day preacher episode, and the rashomon-esque circling back and looking at scenes from different perspectives or with more perspective. was a little disappointed the in the obviousness of some of the songs, especially the karaoke (which was still a pretty emotionally heavy moment).

I found the last ep a little annoying in the manner that the first season was, with random stupid #### happening just to move the plot and people from point a to point b... especially the "not your baby" thing and the return of the non-speaking smokers at a crucial moment allowing discussion of anything (the girls).

but really, minor quibbles for me- I thought this second season was outstanding across the board. happy to read upthread that there's intended to be a third.

question/thought about the end...

given the exceedingly happy ending for Kevin with all of his people waiting at "home" for him, is it possible that he's actually dead an in heaven? I also couldn't remember if kevin and the exwife had lost any kids in the departure?

also- what did psychic hand print guy tell Liv? any thoughts?

I get so excited when something I like musically crosses over into mainstream media, it's SO infrequent. I literally shot forward in my chair about 1/2 second after she hit play on the CD player and yelled out : "SLAYER !!!!!!!!!!! ANGEL OF DEATH !!!!!!!!!!!" My wife looked at me with a bemused/puzzled look on her face that seemed to convey : "Oh dear God, I married a 14-year old." I sat back sheepishly when it dawned on me that she didn't give a rat's ### that Slayer was being played in a primetime HBO drama.
Plus the prostitute's name was "angel" and she was paid to bring about a fake death!

I will come back later - this is more of a bookmark for me.  I am only 5 episodes into S1 and absolutely love it.   I just read through page 1 quickly and was surprised at the lukewarm comments.   So far I am more on board with this than other shows that I have watched recently including True Detective and Fargo.  Will slowly read through the thread, but don't want to get spoiled accidently either.

I did read the book a long time ago when it came out, and just remember bare minimum of the story.

:lmao:

Well, I read through about 4 pages of this thread and it's basically just people #####ing about how bad it is through 4 or 5 episodes, so I guess I am in the minority

I have heard on a couple podcasts I follow that they thought S2 was a bit better.

Wow.  I watched Eps 8-10 of the first season last night.  What a trio of episodes.  Love how they sandwiched the backstory of the 14th around what was happening in current times.  Creepy as all get out what the GR did with the Loved Ones at the end of the season.  I still don't get the complaints about the show.  Sure there's a couple silly things I could do without, but I think they wrapped up a lot of things in S1.  I could see where the Kevin is crazy/not crazy teases might wear, but we'll see where that goes.  I think the acting, emotions, and look of the show far outweigh any slight knock that comes up every once in awhile.

I have S2 at home and ready to go, and I am sure I will knock that out in a week as well.  Can't remember the last time I liked a show this much (maybe early seasons GoT).  Very interested to see how the GR responds and where they go from there.  Seems that Laurie is still one of the weakest links and might be more so with Tom in town.  Does she defect and Meg climbs the ranks?  Seems too soon for that, but we haven't followed anybody else in the GR around either.  Such a fascinating show - love it.

I'm having a hard time remembering my gripe with the show, because S2 washed away most of it.

but IIRC, it had to do with people doing stupid/irrational/unreal things without explanation and without anybody questioning it. the smokers drove me nuts... and I get that they're supposed to.

it was bad enough to get in the way of my completely enjoying the fantastic acting and feel of the show.

Glad to hear, but I am trying to temper expectations because I heard that about Fargo S2 and liked it less.

I think most of my small gripes had to do with Tom and the people he was running with.  Maybe just one too many cults/religions for me with the GR and Matt's faith as well.  They didn't focus on it too much, but I didn't like many of those people.  Maybe a little bit too much as well with Kevin's sanity as I said, but not enough to turn me off.  Overall loved it, but I can see it's not for everybody.  I also seem to pick up from people that they were scared off a bit since one of the showrunners was a main guy from Lost, and they don't want to get wrapped up in a show that asks 100s of questions but has no interest in providing answers.  I was actually surprised how much was answered and wrapped up in S1, but I am guessing a lot of that had to do with them not knowing if they were going to have a S2 until they finished with S1.

Seriously, WTF?  Took me a day to get over and think about all the weird #### that is going on in Texas, and then I get the kick to the balls episode that is #3 with Laurie running mofos over and Liv Tyler's hot, rapey ###.   Going to watch a couple more tonight, I probably can't even think of what I am in store for now.

50/50 reaction to last night's adventures.  I get the feeling that I was one of the few that really liked the GR last year.  I miss them this year - 6 episodes in and only 1 with them (actually tangentially through Laurie).  As much as I loved the Matt episode S1, I didn't dig his episode this time as much.  That said, Ep 6 was fantastic and the scene were Nora and Erica sitting down with the survey was about as good as TV can get.  Loved it, and that was just followed up with Kevin's confession to Nora.

Season 2 was more than twice as good as season 1.
Just finished up the last few episodes of S2, and it seems like I am in the minority that liked S1 better.  I think both are great, but there were 2 episodes I wasn't in love with this season.  One was the 2nd episode we got following Matt around.  The other was the purgatory episode.  That could change if I watch this again.  I think I felt like @El Floppo did with the first season in that there were a couple time I was rolling my eyes this time around.  That said, I still loved it overall and can't think of anything better on TV from the last 4-5 years (I think this is better than Fargo and better than the last couple seasons of GoT).

Still thinking about it, but overall what I think it is was my enjoyment more on real people, and less on supernatural.  I loved the GR from the 1st season because it brought up questions for me on why people would join, and why are they doing what they do.  I just liked the idea of the different cults and reactions that people had to that day.  What I was less on board with was the Kevin crazy/not crazy stuff and Wayne.  For my taste this season had too much mystic and supernatural stuff from birds in boxes to trips to purgatory.  However that stuff was offset with some fantastic scenes like Erika vs. Nora and others.  And of course it made sense in hindsight what happened to the girls, and why that town would be targeted, but that still caught me off guard.  I didn't expect a bomb in the trailer, but I also didn't expect that.

Looks like I only have to wait a couple months for S3.  Not sure what to binge watch now.

Pretty solid episode 1, imo.

If you haven't seen it yet, let season 3 (final season) play out, and binge watch all 3 seasons.  I have to imagine this would be one of the best binges ever as long as they have a decent ending.

I really dug the first episode.  Weird bookend and a ballsy way to start out the story in Miracle.  By the looks of the trailers I saw before the season started, this is going to get ####in' bananas.

That's for sure.  I watched s3e1 again just now and I didn't see the upcoming scenes during the first viewing....wow.

Upon 2nd viewing, I picked up a few nuggets I missed and have a couple questions.

Kevin telling the story on the porch that Matt oddly said he never heard before now makes sense because it wouldn't have been in the book.  I remember watching that the first time thinking that scene was weird.  But it was a great scene.

I hope Nora doesn't have dog DNA.

What was the significance of Dean blowing the whistle in Kev's office?  Did he want to see if Kev would react to it since his back was turned?

How do people know that Nora/Sarah was in Australia during the flash forward at the end of the episode?

Was the theme song from Perfect Strangers show that they alluded to with Mark Lin Baker? I was really hating the song when it started the show off. To cheesy. I thought this episode was a bit of a drop off from last week.

Yes. That was the joke. It was the Perfect Strangers theme.

ETA: I didn't recognize it either. Never a huge PS fan.

I'm with you on this.  I thought season one was far superior.

Hard to believe no one is watching this show.  They just keep on taking it to another level.  Bravo.  Brilliant.

If they stick the landing?  My god.  Last 10 episodes are insanely good.

Only thing missing was Bartokomous.

Recognized the song for sure, but couldn't place it until they mentioned it.  PS was a good show back in the day.

Good stuff again last night...much like the S1 Nora episode.

loved nora walking in on kevin nonchalantly auto-asphyxiating.

considering how insane the concept(s) are here, the writing... especially for the minutia of relationships... is tip-top. takes already good acting and actors to another level.

Another strong episode. Lady's story about losing her kids coupled with the piano score that has been the theme song was very powerful. Must see TV for me.

Eh, I thought it was a so-so episode.  Don't get me wrong, I'd watch Scott Glenn do a commercial for styrofoam peanuts but this story isn't grabbing me.

Did somebody (Cappy?) say earlier in this thread that "Nora is hot as balls?" I bet I say that to myself 20 times an episode where she's a featured character now.
