Yea I can’t imagine Twitter is even worth 5B right now. Shell of the company they used to be. Horribly run, just a joke. Threads is right there with like 10M signups on day 1. If they can even figure out how to give people 75% of what they want without all the spam and hate bots they’ll blow Twitter away.

Meta is a lot of things, namely evil, but they are very competently run. Instagram is a powerhouse. Facebook blows but it’s a money machine while the boomers hang on.
I don't agree with the bolded, at all.

They are actively going after bots, which was the whole point of the changes that started this thread.

You can either have something run smoothly all the time and deal with bots, or you can get rid of all of the bots, but have a clunky difficult to navigate system. They are directly competing interests.

Also, it appears that Threads is going to be have the same heavy handed moderating as the old Twitter, which has been a nice improvement to the new Twitter.

I have none. This is a philosophical debate, not a mathematical one.

Business valuation is somewhat of an inexact science and reasonable opinions can vary substantially, but I think most professionals would have to at least consider the purchase price from an actual cash transaction that closed less than 10 months ago a strong indicator of value. We can all laugh at the $44bln acquisition price but that can't be ignored when valuing a company.
"Price is what you pay, value is what you get" - Warren Buffett

I do see why you would think that, but the reality is the value today is what it is, and I don't think there's any way it's worth anywhere near what Musk paid. A Fidelity analyst just came out and said he thought it was a worth a 3rd of that. Could he be wrong, sure but I don't see many credible people saying it's worth much more than that certainly not $44B.

ETA: hadn't seen this before, Musk himself says it's worth 20B or less:

I could be wrong, but I thought I heard it took Twitter 5 years to get to 30 million users. That was an entirely different time, but still interesting.

Again, don't quote me on this, but I thought it took Mastodon 2 months early this year to go from 380K to 2.5M MAUs. That's MAUs, not users, so not a direct comparison.

Gotta give Meta credit - they're good at taking someone else's idea and generating a ton of users. They've done it over and over again. Not competition I'd want if I were Twitter.

Elon suing Meta for IP theft because Meta has hired many former Twitter employees.. and is suddenly unveiling their new twitter-like app.

welp, who would have seen this coming?
So, Musk has not yet done this, his lawyer wrote a stern letter, only. So far.

However, he has sued the attorneys representing Twitter when Elon finalized the deal with Twitter.

In 2022, the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz represented Twitter in a high-profile legal dispute with Elon Musk, who was trying to backtrack on an agreement to buy the social media company. Nine months later, Twitter—now run by a vengeful Musk—is suing Wachtell.

According to the lawsuit, filed in California superior court, Wachtell lawyers persuaded Twitter’s former management to agree to pay a “success fee” if Musk closed the deal—part of the $90 million in fees that the law firm allegedly arranged in the days leading up to the sale.
Twitter's attorneys had a bonus for getting the deal across the finish line, meaning no one at Twitter would be responsible for paying that money, because that bonus means it was sold, and the buyer, Musk, had to pay the bonus to the attorneys who helped force him to buy Twitter.

Wow

Before he closed the deal musk said he would eventually change it to X. He’s been obsessed with starting X “the everything app”. Not sure trying to recreate a WeChat type app will work but what donI know

I sincerely don't understand the idea behind ditching a well-known trademark for no particular reason. Facebook --> Meta. HBOMax --> Max. Twitter -- > X. Makes no sense to me at all, but there must be a reason why firms choose to do this.

I know he’s rich and all but he honestly has to be one of the dumbest men alive.
You are hilarious.

Dude is one of the most successful people in an entire generation and all you do in here is mock him.

I get no one is perfect and some of these things may be dumb/bad ideas, but your criticism seems more about the politics than actual technology/business related.

His goals with Twitter also seem less about $$ and more about culture and information.

Cappy doesn’t need me to speak for him but he’s definitely not coming from a partisan angle. That’s not his bag.
Well based on a dozen posts in here, he thinks Elon is the Antichrist.

The only people I know IRL who come for Musk that hard do so because he changed Twitter from a liberal echo chamber to one that allows free speech. They want their Twitter back the way it was, so any and every change is assumed to be because Musk is an idiot.

He’s owned X.com since the 90s and has some fascination with X. SpaceX,Tesla Model X, has a kid with a weird name that starts with X

I sympathize with the point you're making, but I think we need to acknowledge that Musk is a polarizing figure even by "billionaire" standards. He likes being in the public eye, and he's neurodivergent. He's going to be a lightning rod for certain types of criticism, and I doubt that bothers him.

He’s done more mainstreaming the green agenda with Tesla than anyone but he broke people online at least by buying twitter. The Elon is stupid meme is hilarious. He does love attention and seems like a weird guy, some of those kids names

The ambitions to make it an all-everything app as alluded here is what X was supposed to be, I think even before he thought about buying Twitter, but maybe I am wrong.

At any rate, I have not heard (yet) about fund-raising to get that going, so this may just be rebranding.

I remember some rumblings as well about Musk and an all inclusive app pre-twitter purchase.

I don’t care about his politics at all. He overpaid by 40 billion for a product that he’s run into the ground and made pretty useless. That’s a stupid person, sorry.

I’ve already said upthread I want the Twitter back that didn’t blast porn, spam and crypto bots into my feed.

I’ve never ever had porn in my feed. I’ve had violent videos in my “for you” but that’s it. I’m glad that’s not my experience. Besides that twitter is the same to me , I do miss tweetbot as a reader

“We’re still negative cash flow, due to ~50% drop in advertising revenue plus heavy debt load. Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else.”

I don’t like the fact that Musk’s attention and financial resources are getting sucked into social media. I wish he would take all that time and treasure and focus all of it instead on the groundbreaking scientific and technological advances that have made him a benefit to humankind.

Yes but I’m glad I don’t get stuff like that. I do get the lunatic fringe true believers from both sides but luckily that’s it. I do understand your comments now .

Yea I used to enjoy the comments section but I have people sitting by me at home a lot so don’t open it now. Like a quarter of the replies are the porn bots.

I do see a lot of lunatics on there but I don’t think that’s particularly new lol

Twitter Is Now Worth a Third of What Musk Paid for It, Fidelity Says
Social-media company’s value sinks to around $15 billion; Fidelity cuts its valuation for a third time
I would love to see how they arrive at this figure. It's not even worth close to that. Two years of profits in their history. Competitive market.

There is no value calculator anyone has that makes it worth that. You have to just just trust that they will someday monetize their users enough.
I don't know how the Substack revenue model is working out, but Twitter whiffed not catering to their stars and offering the similar platform. Let the content generator reel in cash and then skim off that.

Maybe that would not have amounted to much, but there's no reason not to have tried.
Isn’t that what’ they are trying to now. With verified users able to get as revenue?

From the Twitter ceo. Sounds like something Kendall Roy would say while wearing one of his stupid jackets.

Original name was Skynet, but apparently it didn’t test well with focus groups.

X.com was originally his name/vision for Paypal. He wanted it to be an online bank, but at the time all the other execs thought he was crazy and that no one would ever trust their banking to the internet, and thought paypal was better positioned as a payment processor for ebay. Whoops.

In one of the first biographies of him, before he kinda went off the deep end, he talked a lot in the interview about his vision for X (and what eventually became paypal instead). Definitely something he's had on the front of his mind for a long time, so this definitely isn't out of left field (at least from his perspective). Seems like a weird fit for Twitter though, which already has so much brand power.

Will Tweets still be called Tweets? Or are they going to be called Exes?
See this is my point. Any social media company would love the brand association of people worldwide saying tweets and retweets. And he’s taking that name away? It’s just bizarre.

I Truthed this question earlier today and it got a ton of Re-Truths.

I'm probably a hypocrite because Google has all my personal banking, healthcare and financial information, but I just don't see myself ever trusting an Elon Musk company with access to my online banking.

PayPal is worth 81 and a half billion. Seems like they’ve done ok? Can’t say if it was called x.com that would have really worked out.

When he took over my feed immediately was inundated with tweets from far right pundits and politicians that I don't follow , and would never consider following.

Since the migration to threads virtually all of progressive users I follow on both claim they get many times more views on threads than Twitter despite more followers on Twitter.

I open up the comments on Twitter all the time, and I'm not sure that I've ever seen porn in my feed. I hate to use the word "never," but I'm pretty tempted to say that it's literally never happened. With all due respect, if you're getting porn in your feed, it's probably because of the same algorithm that thinks I want to see Ben Shapiro. I don't follow Ben Shapiro, but the algorithm knows that I like politics and he's a big political account, so . . .

Lol no. It’s been pretty well documented on there how many bots have hit the site in the last year since they unblocked so many accounts that were suspended previously.

They’re not real people, they’re obviously bots. It’s not like some famous professional star is being placed in my feed. Same with crypto.

Statement from the new CEO:

It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.

X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.

For years, fans and critics alike have pushed Twitter to dream bigger, to innovate faster, and to fulfill our great potential. X will do that and more. We’ve already started to see X take shape over the past 8 months through our rapid feature launches, but we’re just getting started.
There’s absolutely no limit to this transformation. X will be the platform that can deliver, well….everything. @elonmusk and I are looking forward to working with our teams and every single one of our partners to bring X to the world.
