Isn't Schwartz available now? They requested permission to interview him before so you'd think they'd at least bring him in. Maybe they did and I missed it?

Thought I heard Russinni on the radio this morning say she hasn't heard anything about Schwartz since he was let go by Buffalo

@RobCarlinCSN: Source close to #Redskins decision making says could be other possibilities that haven't been interviewed yet.. Why rush? #RedskinsTalk

Schwartzy would be the best...but maybe Jay doesn't want anyone who will outshine him.

It takes a very strong and confident boss to hire someone more skilled than them, though the best bosses do in fact do that...

How is it that the Redskins can get our hopes so high one week and then they can dash them completely one week following.

It's a special gift.

You know, if Kim Jong-un had ties to the Tampa Bay Bucs I sincerely think we'd consider giving him a look as a potential position coach or front office member with the Redskins.

Maybe put him in charge of parking.

Maybe this is just McCloughan letting Jay do his thing for a year before blowing everything up and starting over?
If this hiring was done 2 weeks ago this fan base would have been furious that another Tampa Bay reject with the 0-16 Lions legacy was hired. But since apparently McCloughan is the savior of the franchise and is a genius people are now "curious and optimistic"
I don't think anyone is "curious and optimistic" about this franchise. Even the biggest homers aren't. They might be optimistic McCloughan can get better talent on the roster over the next few years. But I don't think anyone is optimistic about our coaching staff, QB situation, Team President, or most of the existing roster. This team goes under .500 this year (and I see no reason it won't), say goodbye to Gruden, his staff, RG3, and Bruce Allen.

What's the problem with the team President? Bruce has always managed his President duties well, it was the GM duties that he was never good at.

A good read from Andrew Brandt about McCloughan and the Ron Wolf "scouting tree".

People in the league were aware of McCloughan’s issues with alcohol for some time, and he publicly addressed them in an ESPN The Magazine story in early December. The topic required vulnerability in the team’s interview process. There had to be open and honest communication, but Scot also had options, and he wasn’t going to rush to sign up for the wrong job. He needed assurances from Daniel Snyder and Bruce Allen that there wouldn’t be interference from the top and that everyone would be patient with his plan.

With that autonomy, McCloughan will install a more proven model of success, bringing stability to a franchise that has made too many impulsive decisions driven by emotion. He will develop a pipeline of young talent on a roster that has had too many holes in recent times. Scot will find players. He always has.

OL coach Chris Foerster granted permission to interview for a lateral move.

You don't grant permission to interview one of your coaches if you really want him back. The Redskins can always keep him, but keep in mind that new Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman spent two years as an offensive line assistant to Foerster in Baltimore. And Jay Gruden inherited Foerster here. This season was a feeling-out one for Gruden and he has a much better idea of what he wants and needs in Washington. Now the trick is instituting that vision. That includes players and coaches.
I’ve never considered Foerster a bad line coach by any means. I know about the sacks. That’s more than just the line play and Foerster’s had a big say in the run game, which was excellent the previous two seasons. But I do remember when he was hired several people saying he was just “OK,” and an executive with a team that once employed Foerster said he would let him leave.

McCloghuan hung the DC signing on Gruden (which he should, it should be Gruden's decision). I personally won't get upset because if it is Jay's decision I'm sure he'll screw it up.

It should be noted that Barry has also sucked since the Detroit job. The Chargers LBs have been much worse since he has been here.

In reading Callahan's biography on Wikipedia, it looks like he has had a lot of success as an O-line coach and with offenses in general. He was apparently quite divisive as a head coach at Oakland, but that was quite a while ago.

One thought about Gruden's coaching staff: he is very short on people with experience and with a record of success in their role. Callahan, as an O-line coach, has both. He needs a DC with both as well. And I hope the DC can bring in some of his own people as well.

Barry does not have either. I hope the Barry report was erroneous.

Berry isn't official? I just assumed he was the way it was reported.
No, not even close. And a lot of the sources that were pushing it as a done deal are now saying Fangio is a realistic possibility.
So we have no reason to trust those sources at all.
Exactly.

While other sources, who never said a peep about Berry, are now also pushing the possibility of Fangio. Sources with recent credibility on Skins-related news--JLC (whose hit-rate has improved greatly since he left the Skins beat) and Dianna Rossini (who has been spot on with tons of Skins stories in the last year).

From what I can tell, one person (Ian Rapoport of NFL Network) reported that the Redskins have hired Joe Barry. No other reporter confirmed the story.

I always look for a confirmation before believing it.

Interesting article on Hoghaven.com about the Redskins' desperate need for a QB coach.

http://www.hogshaven.com/2015/1/14/7527193/qb-coach-the-other-redskins-coaching-vacancy

From the article:

The poor play of the quarterbacks and the offensive line had a great deal to do with the lack of offensive success in 2014, but that doesn't change the fact the structure put in place by Gruden was beyond laughable. He was an inexperienced and overrated coordinator that gave himself three jobs (HC, play caller and QB coach) in his first year as a head coach and his number two was the most inexperienced coordinator in the league.

Jay Gruden must bring in a quarterbacks coach to take some of the work off of his plate and to help develop Robert Griffin and Kirk Cousins.

As a boys fan I have mixed feeling about your Callahan hire. On one hand I'm not a big fan of his but really dislike the intimate knowledge of our Oline strengths , and more importantly, weaknesses, he brings to your team.

I'm curious to why he took the Oline job with you guys when he was pissed he got passed over in Dallas and had his play calling duties stripped the season prior.

As to why he took the job:

1. You yourself said that he was not happy with his treatment in Dallas; that said, he was looking for something else.

2. I read where Snyder gave him a boatload of cash. That might have factored into why he took the job here vs. somewhere else.

Apparently he has skills as an OL coach but may not be HC material. If the Skins brought him in soley to work with the OL, then I think it's a solid hire from their perspective.

From hogshaven.com, Vic Fangio will meet with Redskins later today. From the article:

The Redskins are still expected to meet with Vic Fangio, and reports say that if hired, he would likely bring some of his assistants from the 49ers. DB coach Ed Donatell interviewed for the Redskins DC job, and would likely replace Raheem Morris. The Redskins are reportedly very interested in Fangio, and with the recent lucrative contract given to new OL coach Bill Callahan, not afraid to spend on their coaching staff this year. The impression that many people have is that Snyder will not let Fangio out of town without a deal. He just has to make it to the table first.
It all sounds so good.

Rappaport has been wrong about many things, most notably that Jimmy Graham would miss many games this year. Any report that comes from him and no one else is extremely unreliable.

Boy, there's going to potentially be a lot to answer for if the defense doesn't improve markedly...Fangio, largely the fan base and media favorite among those getting more than speculative and marginal consideration, brought in and interviewed (among others), and not offered...and now he's going to be the DC for the Bears...

With the potential DC hires out there: Fangio, Phillips and Schwartz and for us to end up with Barry, just seems like we lost big time.

I don't have a link, but on 106.7 the fan they had some football insider talking about the Redskins DC job and who was pushing for whom. They said Fangio had support from the new GM, Gruden was trying to keep his mind open and not have a favorite going in, and that Bruce Allen either wanted Barry or Morris -- both of who had Tampa Bay ties. In short, I blame Allen. But Gruden is stupid for letting it happen without a fight. Gruden will be the one canned next year if the whole thing implodes.

Not sure that makes him stupid. Getting canned in Year 2 of a 5 year deal by a perennial loser who continues to let Bruce Allen make important decisions kinda seems like a win for him.

I don't even think they tried bringing in Dennis Allen, who is now going back to being an assistant with the Saints.
