Plant Your Flag - Your Player / Team / Situation for 2020 (1 Viewer)

I wouldn't be so sure about that. He's currently ranked WR23 in PPR league. Michael Thomas has only 3 catches for 17 yards after 5 games. I am guessing that Thomas coming back will cut into targets that Sanders has been getting.
23rd is literally a WR2 in PPR.

Stop killing my dreams and let me bask in the glory of being right for 5 weeks.

also, Thomas coming back should loosen coverage for every other Saints receiver. So there. 😛

Generally still feeling good about my flag.
Maybe if this were any other year the offense might be Top 5. Given the offensive explosion across the league, the Steelers currently rank 10th in points scored, 16th in offensive YFS, 19th in passing yards, and 9th in rushing yards.

10th so far, but I still don't think they have hit their full stride

TD Teddy update.

After 7 games Teddy Bridgewater is averaging 276 passing yards per game.

He is currently on pace to throw for 4411 yards as we near the half way point.

Keep Teddy alive!!

Same buddy. Same. I’ve got so many red crosses I feel like I need to put out a donation bucket in front of my house.

And there hasn’t even been a game yet.
No worries. Outside of a player where we knew there was an obvious injury risk, I don't much much weight on an injury causing a miss on these.

For Brady, this is exactly what I thought they'd do. Rocky at first as he gets acclimated and they lean on the excellent defense. But getting more and more comfortable as the season progresses.

I am mostly interested though in thoughts on Cam Newton and what's wrong and how they'll fix it. @Anarchy99 what do you see for Newton going forward?

I thought a couple things would happen that haven't. One, I thought NE would have schemed up more for the Patriots offense. McDaniels sounded almost giddy in camp about all the things he could draw up. In the early going, the Pats had a strong running game and that led to some ability to move the ball through the air. Then NE had all the COVID stuff that kept them from practicing and they have looked horrible since. They have gotten behind early and have gotten away from the running game. Yesterday was the perfect example. They stopped SF on their first two plays and were looking at a 3 and out and were about to sack Jimmy G who managed a last second dump off to Kittle. The drive continued for a TD.

They have mastered how to get 9 yards on an offensive series, which obviously is a problem. Add in that Edelman is hurt and probably shouldn't even be playing, and that leaves them with a quandary on how to move the football. In their first possession yesterday, they got to around midfield and White was stopped just short of a first down and they opted to punt. They quickly got down two TD and then they didn't really even try to run their run heavy offense.

Second, I thought Tampa would be more in disarray than they have been. I felt the Bucs with limited training camp would take 6 or 8 games to get acclimated and stood a decent chance of getting Brady clobbered while they all got on the same page. I still think he has missed some passes and made some poor decisions (ie the pick sixes early on) that he wouldn't have made several years ago. I also did not give the Tampa defense enough credit. They have been better than I expected.

The irony is that in the first few weeks NE looked like they didn't miss a beat with a new QB and hardly any practice while the Bucs looked a little bit lost at times. Now they have flipped flopped. As for the what can NE do question, for starters they can play better in the early part of games, stick with the run longer, and not turn the ball over. One of the issues I have noticed is that Cam is either staying in the pocket too long / holding the ball or trying to set up in the pocket too close to the line of scrimmage. Several of his interceptions have been from tipped passes that stood a better chance of being completed (ie guys were open) if he had moved or took another couple steps back in his drop.

The other issue which has carried over from training camp is Cam is not trusting his reads and instead of just firing the ball, he has been indecisive and looks for a different option. Combined with what I just posted, that is turning into sacks and a collapsing pocket . . . and there hasn't been a way for him to step into his passes. It's been debated in the Boston sports media circle that Edelman is not a fan of whomever has been throwing the ball to him this year, as his targets have often led him into defenders or have thrown passes behind him. Some speculate he is reluctant to want to take the contact on a play that many times won't help them much. A five yard crossing route on a 3rd and 13 or a 2 yard sideline route is not worth getting crushed.

More practice in general will help. More time to absorb the playbook would help. Adding a more proven receiver by trade would help (if it is actually an impact receiver and not just a journeyman in his 30's like Sanu was). Having an offensive line that isn't reconfigured almost every game and every possession would help. Edelman healthy and Harry healthy (knocked out of yesterday's game) would help. The defense playing better would help.

Add it all up, and I am not sure any of those would make the offense "good". They might be closer to average. I am not sure Cam fits well with the offensive players they have to work with. They still would be a sub-par offense with Brady, but they wouldn't have turned the ball over 11 times in three games with TB12. That's one thing I didn't account for . . . I got so used to Brady not throwing interceptions that it didn't really register with me that throwing the ball away is an acquired skill.

Thanks @Anarchy99

Do you have info on Edelman's injury? Would love to more more beyond the official reports.

For Newton, I've heard a few people speculate he was moving oddly and might be hurt. Anything there?

Cam says his Wi-Fi is off with Edelman. Edelman usually has a bunch of things that could be classified as boo boo's up to full bore injuries involving his knee, shoulder, and ribs. I would definitely say he looks off and less engaged. He looks slower and more tentative, but he is also getting older and has taken a lot of hits.

Some people are speculating that Cam's shoulder injury may have flared up. After watching the game, I wouldn't say he was moving oddly, he just wasn't moving side to side. He seemed to only go straight and not left or right. He definitely didn't appear like he was looking to run the football. There were times he could have pulled the ball down and run for 10 yards and didn't, instead throwing the ball (mostly inaccurately). I seem to remember one time he got hit or sacked that he came up and seemed like he was both slow to get up and he bent his knew a couple of times to stretch it out but stayed in the game.

Cam is probably rusty from missing a couple weeks of practice, and he likely has hit a patch of "QB soreness" that ebbs and flows in the course of a season. My concern yesterday was that his timing and passes were off . . . and not by a little bit. Some passes bounced 20 feet in front of the receiver,  8 feet behind someone 20 feet away, or otherwise hard to catch.

Forgot to mention that there has been a lot of talk that NE would move Gilmore to upgrade the offense. That really isn't new news, as several people have indicated he was on the trading block before the season started. Trading him seems like a NE thing to do (expensive and 30 years old). But trading him and eating a decent cap hit doesn't seem like a NE things to do (it would cost them $15 million in dead cap money split between this year and next to free up $9.5 million in cap space).

I've definitely said this before but I'll plant it here. The Football Team (offense) is going to be better than people think. I've got McLaurin getting 150 targets and catching 100 balls. He'll be going in the 2nd round of redrafts next year.
134 targets in 15 games. Not as good as I was hoping but close. Probably not much of a call on my part. 2nd round redraft this year is probably not happening.

That said I'll take a slightly lesser physical version of Brady who knows what he's doing and has these weapons. I'd place the over/under at 4600 yards, 35 TDs.
4633 yards 40 TDs

I had some worries early. But this was one of those to me that made perfect sense. In my opinion, the Patriots had been held together by Brady the last few years. He masked a LOT of gigantic whiffs from Belichick in scouting skill position players. The fact he could score points throwing to a receiving corps as abysmal as what they put out there just begged the question - what could he do with talented receivers?

We know what he did in years past with Randy Moss and Gronkowski and some others.

I think we're seeing the answer of could he still do something now with good receivers.

Plus a solid defense.

Things were rocky early just as you'd expect with no preseason and limited camp. Then they got rolling.

McLaurin appears clearly talented ... just hoping the overall offensive situation can improve for him soon.
