Ran a 10k - Official Thread (7 Viewers)

What do you running guys do when you're sick? Bad sore throat and still wanna run - what is your gameplan?
Noob here, I "run" best I can. We are going through a transition from spring to summer and I'm all congested. I have a snot rag for when on a treadmill or just blow it out while on the road. I just don't expect a ton of improvement. My only goal is to maintain.

Mine too. The Kenyans in this thread are several levels above where I'm at. I can hardly sleep at night my throat is so sore, much less run my normal 5-6 miles.
Originally you said you wanted to run. Now it sounds like you may be too sick to train.

I had a horrible sore throat this past January. Lasted like 10 days. But I was training for a marathon so I ran my 18 mile long run. When I got home my temperature was 103. Don't be like me.

depends how bad it is, but usually if I can run, I run. If I want to take it easy but still be active, I'll hit the pool for form work.

Speaking of heartrate going through the roof, I'm proposing to the GF tonight...
Speaking of gun to the head...you're getting married??

j/k congrats
 Congrats Grue! As much as guys like to make jokes about marriage, being married to the right one is awesome.

50k/10k brick today. One of those "not fast but felt great" confidence boosts.

Bike - 20.3mph / 132bpm

Run - 8:25 pace / 147bpm

:lmao: Be like Hang 10 in every other way - but yeah, don't do this.

Congrats. How long have you known her?
We've been together 8-1/2 months. She's 33, and I'm 38, and we've both been married once before. We know what we want. I don't have time to mess around anymore.
My wife and I were a little older when we met and I asked her after we had been together for about the same amount of time as you and your girlfriend (soon to be fiance). Something to be said for maturity and knowing what you want.

Congrats dude!
8-1/2 years here and we're older than both of you. That said, we would be married if it wasn't for the marriage penalty in this county.

they county can make you stop having sex?

So...not that I was terribly worried, but she said yes! :-)
Congrats!

So my back wasn't 100% but I decided to run anyway. Probably a mistake. It felt tight after just a quarter mile and never loosened up. I managed to get 2.25 miles in about 28 minutes and had to stop. Laying on the heating pad now.

It's odd - took the kids to the pool earlier as it opened today and it felt good - swam about 400 easy yards just to get some laps in. Never felt it until I started running. I'm going to stay off it again for a couple days - I may need a shot in my lower back to get the muscles to release.

Lay off the running for a while. Swim more.

Good advice - I may not have a choice but it's the smart thing to do anyway.

3 hour tour, err, ride this morning.

Divided into 2, first half on the flatter segment east of 401, kept hr in the low 130s with a higher cadence. 2nd half crossed 401 into the hillier section nearby (not duck's or sand's hills but rolling), revved the engine a bit to the high 140s / low 150s. Discovered that when I cross over 150 I lose any desire to eat or even drink. I think I'll need to stay under MAF for the HIM on the bike.

Longest run for the year for me this morning. 15.75 miles/7:40 pace/132 avg. HR. I thought about signing up for a race for today but the suck index is about 140 so I thought better of it.

Back to the Beach Half Marathon

1:49:02 (8:28/mile) avg HR: 168 3rd in AG

Oof, what a 'suck'y day. I don't know the dew point, but it was low 60s and humidity > 90%. Traveled into Detroit on Saturday and had dinner with relatives of my future DIL. Got to 2Young's around 9 p.m., caught up on things with him and his wife, then got quite a good night's sleep. 2Young left early, since he was volunteering, and I got a ride with another one of my Dances With Dirt buddies. Did a short warm-up before slipping into the corrals. The course is a mix of trails early, mid, and late as well as some bike paths and dirt roads. It's a good course ...just a hard day to run it!

My Garmin has been acting up ...I can't get good per-mile data (as happened with Boston). I do know I ran the first half around 8:25/mile and a 165 avg. HR, and the back half was a similar pace (though slowed by one big, nasty hill) and a 168 HR. HR was in the mid/high 170s for the final mile. That is what I planned to do: Control the HR over the first half, then let it climb over the second half before pushing to the finish.

The suck index is well-named. Nothing was enjoyable about this ...just keeping it under control early and saving something in the tank for the late miles. Overall, the HR ended up about where I'd expect for a HM. I clearly need to be doing more hill work, though ...and more training in general, now that the ankle is generally healed (though a little stiff). Instead of AG awards they were giving out nice canvas beach bags (or race day bags).

Cheaha Ultra Ride Report

The ride.

Details:

124.5 miles

8:25 moving time

12,500 ft. of climbing

One pair of torched legs.

Gents,

I don't do 50mile runs, so no 16 hour adventures to be had there. This is about as epic as I get. The event is the inaugural edition of this option of the ride. Normally it's 100 miles on the nose with 8500 ft of climbing or so. The Ultra edition adds a crapload of climbing, all of it at the end of the ride. It was a cool, drizzly morning (100% humidity through 60 miles or so). But only 65 degrees, so really pretty good for riding. Had to take the downhills slow due to the rain. Despite being way too heavy set lots of PRs, including a really nice one for the only Cat 2 climb on the course (highest point in Alabama and we climbed it twice - once from each direction). Felt pretty good into the Ultra part - at mile 87 the Ultra folks peeled off an added in another four climbs. Three of these climbs included 20% plus gradients. Made it up the first two and then slowed down as I started getting pretty beat up and fatigued at this point and the temperature spiked to the 80s as the sun peeked out. All was well until the last climb (and honestly yhe hardest one in the whole event) - that one was up the second highest point in Alabama and it had a 1/2 mile at 15+%. I was starting to cramp here and just couldn't hold the torque needed to get up. Eh, whatever. I got the the top (somehow) and screamed home. On the bike 8 1/2 hours today. Longest ride ever by 17 miles. I'm going to feel this tomorrow.

TLDR - Climbed lots of big hills, including the highest point in Alabama twice with a spritzer of the second highest point in Alabama. Got tired at the end, but finished out an epic day. Had huge calzone for dinner - it was awesome.

Swam maybe 500 yards (just piddling around, no goggles and trying to loosen up my back). Felt good. FUBAR sold me on no running but I needed to do something more so I did the elliptical for 45 minutes and sweated my ### off. Felt good and was easy enough on my back. Still tight - I need to just swim for a week and see how it feels.

Great job Tri-man and Sand. I can’t imagine 8.5 hrs on a bike.

I raced the Wildwood Half on Sunday. I didn't have high expectations for this one, my mileage has been limited since Boston and it wasn't until Wednesday and Thursday of last week that I had enjoyable runs.

The suck index was slightly over 130 and so the plan was to run the first few miles at 6:45 and then go from there. Usually in races I need to hold myself back from running to fast early on, but for this one I had a tough time getting up to speed and felt very warm right from the start so I just ran by feel. Around mile 4 I got in a nice rhythm and started passing people, and I am fairly certain that no one passed me after mile 4.

Around mile 7 I caught up to an older guy and we were talking about how impressive the lead female was running. At the time she was 2nd overall and she finished 1:21:21. I noticed that I didn’t have too much difficulty talking so I decided that I was going to pick up the pace.

I ended up passing a bunch of people the 2nd half of the race including 3 people during the last mile. Finished 14th overall and 2nd in my age group with a 1:28:33. Not a PR but I am happy with the result. This is the first time I have run a negative split for a half and I think my running instincts are improving in that I think running the first few miles easy was the right call on this day.

The Garmin Data.

I've been plugging along with with my 5m/day weekday before work routine, keeping effort steady each time. Times are getting faster, 7:52 ave for this morning's run. Will find a 5k to do soon, missed one on Saturday in my town that I didn't know was happening until the day before but registration was full. Going to start mixing in a track workout on Wednesday mornings.

TomTom hr readings are still way off, not even paying attention to them. Will look into sending it back for a replacement.

Nice job tri-man. Sounds like a cool course to run.

Sand, I couldn't imagine being on a bike that long. What a ride. Congrats.

Nice job pbm on the negative split. You said something in there I will file away for future races - "ran by feel". I need to do this more and ignore the watch.

any chance they have another ride later this summer (say after the 4th of July) or in the fall?
Indeed. Look here. I will likely do the Hot Hundred (hot, flat, very fast) and the Tannehill one (very hilly for first 20 miles, then pretty flat). There is also the All You Can Eat one up in Huntspatch.

Finished 14th overall and 2nd in my age group with a 1:28:33.

Super nice PBM. The HR track is picture perfect - looks like you ran that really, really well.

---

Speaking of HR, this is the first time I've outlasted my HR monitor. It made it 8:20, a mark I never thought I'd eclipse.

Great racing this weekend guys!

Thanks for sharing the Garmin data pbm, impressively strong and steady. What's you HM pr?

there was a thing back innaday where people did running workouts in pools, with floats and fins. I did this in a group class a couple of weeks while rehabbing- great workout. you're treading water, not actually running on the bottom of the pool. not sure if it still exists- but highly recommend for joint issues where impact is a problem... not sure about backs though.
