Back to the Beach Half Marathon
1:49:02 (8:28/mile) avg HR: 168 3rd in AG
Oof, what a 'suck'y day. I don't know the dew point, but it was low 60s and humidity > 90%. Traveled into Detroit on Saturday and had dinner with relatives of my future DIL. Got to 2Young's around 9 p.m., caught up on things with him and his wife, then got quite a good night's sleep. 2Young left early, since he was volunteering, and I got a ride with another one of my Dances With Dirt buddies. Did a short warm-up before slipping into the corrals. The course is a mix of trails early, mid, and late as well as some bike paths and dirt roads. It's a good course ...just a hard day to run it!
My Garmin has been acting up ...I can't get good per-mile data (as happened with Boston). I do know I ran the first half around 8:25/mile and a 165 avg. HR, and the back half was a similar pace (though slowed by one big, nasty hill) and a 168 HR. HR was in the mid/high 170s for the final mile. That is what I planned to do: Control the HR over the first half, then let it climb over the second half before pushing to the finish.
The suck index is well-named. Nothing was enjoyable about this ...just keeping it under control early and saving something in the tank for the late miles. Overall, the HR ended up about where I'd expect for a HM. I clearly need to be doing more hill work, though ...and more training in general, now that the ankle is generally healed (though a little stiff). Instead of AG awards they were giving out nice canvas beach bags (or race day bags).
