RB Cam Akers, Free Agent (5 Viewers)

I think the ADP of Cam Akers is all over the place based on where you are drafting. Overall ADP is Yahoo 37, ESPN 35 Underdog 56 . I have heard analysts argue as high as Round 2 for Akers with these points:

1- Superhuman recovery time(6 Months)
2- McVay gave Cam the workhorse touches as soon as he could, despite Sony and Henderson being avail
3- They let Sony walk
4-They didn't bring in any other RB, even during the soft tissue injuries when Cam and Henderson sat out of practice in August.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my spin, on these Pro Akers talking points since I have had to consider Akers at length as a potential Rd 12 keeper.

1.The Achilles injury timetable has got to be potentially reset and anyone that cites other players like Donta Foreman, is still missing the point that modern medicine makes these players potentially G2G in a shorter window and it is an advancement. Foreman had the old procedure so their timetable is not likely relevant. I think the surgery is more of the cause than Aker superhuman healing. Especially since we saw James Robinson back too.

2. Maybe this is a fault of McVay who has a tendency to feature a workhorse and maybe this year with the platoon and saying feeling like they have 2 starters is the start of something, but it sounds more like coachspeak and I will take the actions of the coach over nice things he says until proven otherwise. During the pivotal championship Cam still got significant carries.

Combining 3-4. Why get rid of Sony? Why not bring in someone? Especially if these guys are hurt and taking off preseason. From our perspectives we think its kind of crazy to have a returning Akers with the dreaded Achilles, Boo Boo Henderson, and Broken foot Kyren. I think we just need to assume that the Rams know more and this should give us confidence in Cam.

Having said all that I prolly won't keep Cam and will keep Mike Williams Rd 10 and Javonte Williams Rd 7, because why eve deal with these injuries when you can escape it. LOL!

Don't want to deal with injuries so you take the guy with a broken neck in his past?! :P

I'm not down with the Akers hype at all. He hasnt proven more than Henderson has. This backfield could work itself out a lot of different ways I feel, including Hendo taking over. These two should be valued about the same.

I like Henderson but don't think the coaches would really let him be a bellcow. Could see a fairly even timeshare as best case for Henderson barring injury.

There's Cam Akers hype? He's been on a free fall down draft boards for the last month.
He's been falling since his poor effort in the playoffs, but still not enough in my opinion. I mean 'hype' as in his value is out of whack with what he's done on the field. But maybe I used the wrong word. I think it's difficult to say between Henderson and Akers who leads this backfield. It smells like a frustrating situation.

I presume all the “RB Achilles = death” folks in this thread aren’t drafting James Robinson either?
I traded away Robinson because I’m skeptical he’s a contributor in 2022.

The injury concerns me for both Akers & Robinson. The track record is terrible - if they can return to form, they’d be the 1st two to do it.

Playing isn’t the same thing as recovering completely. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out for them both, but I’m glad my season doesn’t depend on it in any league. I’ve re-watched some of the Akers “highlights” from last year’s playoff games. He looked ok. When there was a hole he ran through it. I wasn’t seeing break-away speed. I wasn’t seeing a lot of burst.

The narrative has been that he faced tough defense, which is true. But on plays where he had space, I wasn’t particularly impressed, nor did I think he flashed the ability he had prior to the injury.

*note: I did take a flier on Robinson in 2 NFC leagues, but both were relatively late picks.

I'll believe McVay runs a time share when I see it. He's said he's going to run a RB timeshare multiple times in other offseasons and then the games start. My prediction is Akers has 65+% of snaps and touches on Thursday.

It's only fair to consider McVay's tendency since Gurley's exit because a coach doesn't have much choice when his team pays a back that kind of money.

Since then, from one game to the next, he's featured 4 different running backs, and at times mixed and matched.

At one point it looked like McVay had found his next Gurley in Akers. But, he tore his Achilles. Some people say he will never be the same. So, even while accepting that coach wants a bell cow, it isn't obviously going to be Akers.

Really excited to see how they divy them up the first game. Luckily we get to see tomorrow night!

You're going to be sick to your stomach looking at a 13 for 35 rushing 2 rec for 13 yard game until next waiver cycle lol

Can't imagine starting him unless you got him at a crazy value

Gross, that would suck. But if you got him at 'crazy value', why would you be starting him? Means you got him late and lots of other RB's on your roster ahead of him. It's if you reached for him, that's when you should be starting him.

I mean, FBG has him ranked as RB20 this year, so I don't he's in FLEX territory for sure, if not RB2

I hate to dogpile on him and I understand he was coming off an Achilles tear, but that's kind of my point. Have you guys seen just how BAD his statline was last year for the playoffs?

Wildcard vs Arizona: 17 Carries for 55 Yards (3.2 YPC)
Divisional vs Tampa Bay: 24 Carries for 48 Yards (2.0 YPC)
NFC Championship vs San Francisco: 13 Carries for 48 Yards (3.7 YPC)
Super Bowl vs Cincinnati: 13 Carries for 21 Yards (1.6 YPC)

Total Postseason Stats: 67 Carries / 172 Yards (2.6 YPC) / 0 Touchdowns (4 games)

It's the kind of production you would expect from a guy coming off an Achilles injury against playoff caliber defenses. Those aren't numbers that are going to earn you the hot hand. Buffalo is a playoff caliber defense as well. I think he's cashed. They won in spite of his lack of production down the stretch last year, so I'm sure LA is happy to keep him around on his rookie contract and see if he can regain form. They're still going to be a 13 win team regardless of whether Akers contributes or not.

8 months from SuperBowl game.... it was amazing that he even played in the playoffs after that tear within the season. Modern medicine is a wonderful thing. I want to see what he looks like on the field in real game action against #1s. Very excited about tonight since Buffalo is a Top D... we're going to learn a lot about how he has healed and how McVay is using the offense.

There was glitch in the matrix last night as I was trying to draft on my phone while simultaneously playing in disc golf league.

I got stuck with Akers in the 4th thanks to auto-pick. I guess i'm along for the ride now. LFG!

Regretting not accepting the late 2023 first I was offered earlier this week. Not completely dead obviously but not being first on the field isn't a good look.

Watched Henderson get stuffed on these early runs
-Rams having a lot of trouble running the ball.
-Need to open up the menu by getting multiple receivers involved

I'm just amazed they fed him carries on top of carries beyond all reason when he was fresh off the injury, and nine months later it's kid gloves. Dreadful camp?
