Except he’s already said last year scared him(losing backs)and he’s gonna roll with the hot hand. I think he is preparing Mason this weekI doubt that passionately. They had three RBs active. You don't put someone who is unprepared on the GameDay roster. Mitchell went down with 12:15 left in the 2nd. Jeff Wilson's first touch was at 8:43 in the 2nd quarter.I'm not sure I agree with this. Imo they didn't give mason any carries is mostly due to preparation. He had an extra full week of practice this week. Jeff certainly has the first crack, but if he looks pedestrian (which I think he is) then Mason is going to get touches.IMO this is the issue. He's not going to get a fair shot this week. Mitchell went down and Wilson ended up on the field for 40 plays, Mitchell was in for 17, the Niners ran 68 plays total. Mason got 0 snaps on offense.
I know everyone thinks Shanahan plays games with his RBs, but that's mostly perception not reality. Shanahan is one of the very few HCs who reliably feeds his lead back until the wheels fall off and then it's next man up.
Wilson is the lead back this week. He's going to eat all the. If he goes down we'll see who Shanahan likes more among whoever is active this week.
That's not a coincidence. That's how Shanahan rolls. The lead back eats, everyone else gets to chew theafterwards.
ETA: Mason had 5 snaps on STs. 15 players had more, so it's difficult to argue STs is why he was active.

Even if I thought he had a chance tomorrow I sure as hell wouldn’t start him. I would have to give it a game to be sure. Starting him is like you don’t care if you get a goose egg, unless you’re desperate.

Why would you ever consider starting him until you know what kind of role he will have? I know fantasy players are gamblers at heart, but this smells of wanting to give a game away. Or is this shtick and I’m not in on it?

Yeah. If you are having to dig deep to fill your RB spot(s), Mason is a decent outside shot play. But if you have anyone else with moderate reliability, come on. Gotta give it at least one game without Mitchell to see what happens.

Shanahan has a history and it's not the one that a lot of people seem to believe it is.
The smart money is Wilson, Deebo & Lance will see 95%+ of the carries.

I won't say Mason won't get the bulk of the carries. I just wouldn't bet my fantasy week on it. Especially if you have other guys like Breece Hall, who just had a 45 percent snap share last game and figures to improve upon that if things break right for him. Don't forget, the Jets have every reason to want him to start over Michael Carter. It's just that there's no substitute for experience sometimes, and the bumps will be there along the way.
But betting my day on Mason when Wilson and TDP are there? Wouldn't do it. Shanahan did say he'd ride hot hand, it seems, but that's too rich of a bet for my blood.
