RB Tyjae Spears, TEN (1 Viewer)

The Coachspeak Index
#Titans HC Brian Callahan on whether he still wants a 50/50 split between Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears:

“I do feel the same way. I feel like I would still like to get more touches for Tyjae… I see Tyjae as a really impactful player and a guy that we have to make sure has his requisite touches to help our offense.”

I expect they tape up his ankle and he plays thru it.
I believe they need Chestnut to play so they come to the realization that these cute clever runs are not always necessary and sometimes you can simply run up the middle- it is not a prior regime/Henry thing where their pride needs to be affected, it's a common NFL thing. I'm hopeful of some Chestnut Sunday. Their great defense has been tired late and they need to burn up some clock to let them get some rest.

I've been dead wrong on Chestnut thru two games. At this point, idk when, but they need a sprinkling of him throughout the game even when Spears is healthy. Ya can't have three quick pass plays and the defense doesn't even finish their Gatorade "all the time."

What I want, what everyone wants, won't be this week. I'd expect it's exactly the same as week one. A lot of Pollard and then Spears gets like 20-30%. I don't think the coach is lying. I just think ya don't push the ankle too much and go 50/50 when there are two capable backs around.

PS RB Jabari Small is activated for Sunday.

Could be Spears related, could be ST related or both

Just sad how electric he was last year and then Pollard comes in and takes 70% share. Perhaps Pollard was an incredible signing for his cost considering he was still recovering from that injury.

FWIW I totally agree with what Bri said here. Did not work out in week one, was trending that way in week 2 before he got hurt.

It probably won't be this week either. Sounds like Spears is playing but also does not sound like he's near all the way healthy.

Tweaked ankle in warmups and still playing (posted in game thread)
I'd bench him in FF
With Jabari Small active I think it's curious the Titans didn't bench him unless it's for ST

@AaronWilson_NFL

#Titans worked out Elijah Dotson, Joshua Kelley, James Robinson, Isaiah Spiller

Not sure what this is about maybe just working up an oncall list.

Spears had 20 snaps to Pollard's 34.

Jabari Small was activated off PS but had zero snaps so might be related to him.

Nothing of consequence today

This seems a bit odd unless someone got dinged up again....Chestnut got zero action as the third stringer.

Very curious as I have an offer in my dynasty league to pick up Spears. Hmm...

Last year Spears had about a 50% snap share and ended the year with 70 targets. That was with Henry in the mix the whole year.

I know Pollard is a good back too but Spears has less snap % so far this year (45, 33, 37%). He only has 10 targets but he's caught them all. His targets per game are slightly down as well.

I did expect another time share with Pollard but so far he's slightly under usage compared to last year. Now I know he had the ankle injury so this may have limited him so far this year.

If his usage stays as is, it will be disappointing. If his usage increases as his ankle gets better then things should improve. I don't expect him to get 70% of the snaps but getting back to 50-55% would be much better. He's been very good in the passing game when given teh chance.

Yeah zero on offense, 13 snaps on ST.
Small has been on the PS but was activated Saturday and then zero snaps. Why waste an active spot? What happened sat/sun?

Spears info coming tomorrow but probably Wednesday. The MRI was done today soooo I'm guessing he's out for weeks.

Callahan said Chestnut would fill in.
He said it wouldn't be the same distribution as w Spears but there would be a distribution they had to work out.

"Pollard getting most of the work?"
"No he's not a 30 carry back. He's not built like that."
He explained Chestnut is a different type of back than Spears (More Henry light, little Henry, classic style) and certain runs would be better suited for each back in different situations.

Add a back?
If he's out weeks and we feel one is needed but that also depends what's available.

Zero mention of Small

In your opinion, is chestnut worth grabbing as a handcuff for Pollard?

Handcuff like If Pollard gets hurt? Absolutely. Next man up.

To use now filling in for Spears and sharing-

I very much liked him and touted him this summer.
He is 6 carries for 9 yards and then vroom look at him go. He very much is like a back that learned under Henry.
The Titans have allowed a blocked punt 4 of 5 games. During one game he completely missed a fake by the rushing defender and allowed the block. He took a lot of flack and apologized to the team and publicly. I haven't seen him as the blitz pickup guy since. He was in there because he's excellent at it. He's took "what you need to be a good back" to heart and put the work in but..he hasn't been put back. He has ran down the field and smashed some with his shoulders and still shown the great effort. I'm not sure where he stands with the trust.
Before this- no doubt. Love his style and think he's a fine backup like Algier is. A lot of Titans fans have been waiting for the preseason darling to get a chance after playing with the first string for 2-3 summers.

He's beaten out Haskins(a drafted guy) twice. Small. McNichols (Washington), Jonathan Ward(Steelers) and Jordan Wilkins.

Here's some highlights-

Not confident in the recommendation so gave details. I know you wanted a yes or no but it's not clear.

No presser today.
I think Callahan just misspoke saying tomorrow. He meant Wednesday.

TD has him saying "week to week" yesterday around noon but around 6pm Callahn spoke on his show.

Radio today has him out weeks based on conjecture of "day to day" versus "week to week."

Still the same hangup- the MRI will show a more definitive answer. Wednesday is the usual injury update day and first day of practice with pressers.

Presser, not practicing, week to week. Very much expected. Just we all do this obligatory dance each Wednesday confirming injuries.

I didn't hear any MRI comments but missed the opening few minutes

Coach said Kelly could be activated. He was very excited to be there with a fun little interview; knows some of the guys and was hoping for another chance etc. I didn't think he looked interested which is in Chestnut's favor. More like yeah I guess he could be activated, depends how fast he picks things up.

Spears has been one of the bigger disappointments this year. Even with Pollard in town, I was expecting more. Hopefully, he can get healthy and start producing.

Your last part of the sentence explains the first part.

He's been banged up since the start of the season which is unfortunate.

Kelly will play as third RB and did pick things up quickly and, reading tea leaves, Coach did seem intrigued.
Now I'm switching and projecting a quick hook for Chestnut. That's a tough spot for a kid that is a throwback and goes 6 for 12 or 8 for 20 yards and then busts one. The timing of him busting one is probably everything. If he can do it Kelly stays sitting but if he doesn't then Kelly comes in.

Ya just can't play offense with a bad QB and everything from there becomes pathetic.

Spears has looked like himself.

Pollard has had some games where he rocked and in any other context he's getting 100+ yards.

They don't have Henry and only HOF RBs can find great success when the passing game isn't working. Everyone else has to get cute to manufacture production and the Titans have done that.

Spears and Pollard were supposed to be in the same backfield some and one shifts... anywhere. They did this in camp and showed it in games but only sparingly.

I would give up on Spears for redraft. For the reasons others have said and because Pollard is the hot hand. A bad offense isn't going away from the one thing that's working.

A Pollard injury or Rudolph success could rejuvenate Spears' 2024 season but we are probably looking at a 2025 discussion of reminding everyone it's supposed to be a two back backfield.

Weirdness.
Callahan didn't activate Kelly after all
This was Friday from the Titans site and presser I watched:

"Callahan said he expects running back Joshua Kelley, added to the practice squad earlier in the week, to be the team's third back on Sunday, alongside Tony Pollard and Julius Chestnut."

*****
Sooo I guess he's back to valuing Chestnut quite a bit.

I don't think Spears is back this week. I think it's just talk that he could be.
Limited today

Any value holding this guy? This offense looks a bit better with Rudolph and j know the running backs get good receiving game in this offense

Only really as a handcuff to Pollard in knowing that when he's healthy, he will get the bulk of the work.

This sounds about right. He’s not the lead back yet. And he’s not good enough early enough to leave no question about it. He’s just a good back that can shine if given the opportunity.

He's out

Chestnut was mentioned as playing well and should have gotten more work. 8 snaps, 3 carries for 15 yards. One catch that went nowhere. He came in 2-3 times and picked up the blitz well and it wasn't til Pollard got hit hard that he "played." He definitely looked like someone the coach didn't want to play and I'm glad he mentioned he should have got more work.

Kelly is up this week. They added four to the active roster and he was just elevated so that's not the strongest sign for him. They had a spot if they wanted to.

Just a reminder-
Spears is probably unlikely next week.

As I said earlier, it's done me a lot of good to think of explosive backs as WRs over the years.
That he put some work in and hurt his hamstring in practice means some regression here. That's the tricky part of hamstring injuries. Ya gotta see how it is but if it hurts it's like "one step forward two steps back."

Again, think of him as a WR that seemed good but tweaked it and it'll help your roster decisions

Where are you ranking him ROS in ppr? I'm trying to access should he be on 12-team rosters because he's sitting on the waivers.

Some guys like myself are more invested in high upside lotto tickets.

I don't know. I have him on 2 teams and he's not playable until he shows it. So even if I hear he is playing I likely need to see something from him before I play him. It's not currently good.

Pollard would have to miss time for me to like him.
He's a handcuff more than a share.
Coach has said it's a share and it always seems to be followed with an after game quote that they're trying to get him more work.
It's easiest to just consider him a handcuff

And a hurt handcuff at that. I’ve dropped him two weeks ago and haven’t looked back.

Titans have walk thru today and full pads tomorrow. I don't think we'll know anything til Friday.
I'm doubtful and figuring a setback, give him another week
He did practice in full today. I was sure full pads meant he's be limited but... we'll see

To add to my comment above. Now pollard is not practicing with a foot injury. I’m back on the wagon!
I read he practiced in full. That combined with coach's comments on reducing Pollards load, constant DNPs, and a history of getting banged up some, I'd think Spears is a decent add here.

Also, TN's schedule week 13 on is pretty sweet: @WASH (Tracy was running all over them), JAX, CIN, @Indy, @Jax.

If this offense is still functional down the stretch, the RBs are going to eat here.

Pollard didn't practice last week.

The hammy has to be tested (probably was) and we hear positive results (tomorrow)
