San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (2 Viewers)

I disagree. And I’m not irritated because it means SF will lose, it just makes for crappy football.

Ah, I see. Well, the second lament is surely sound. The Bears/49ers game earlier this year was no fun, and the 49ers did indeed lose.

I'm just thinking with your run defense and running game that you'd be better equipped to handle muddy, monsoon-like conditions than Seattle. I could be wrong.

Skill and scheme advantages are a lot less pronounced when it just 22 dudes flopping around in the mud. It’s going to be a lot of McCaffrey running between the tackles for 2 yards today.

I think you may see more of Mitchell than usual because of his more straight ahead running style. Expect a lot of short passes to Deebo as well.

Looks like the rain in Santa Clara is holding off until the start of the game. Nice. Absolutely pouring right now in Rocklin, CA

True, and I don't disagree with you. That said, aren't you guys known for your brawn, from Trent Williams onward? It seemed like you guys were able to lay physical lumber on other teams last year in the playoffs. Not much has changed from a roster perspective, so has this?

Again, not disagreeing. Just making a point that I think is the standard narrative around you guys.

Yeah, I’m in Sacramento and if the weather in Santa Clara is anything like here, it is going to be a mess.

They have a couple of beefy guys but this is a zone read team, it’s not a power running attack that relies on huge OL mauling their counterparts.

A lot of precision cuts, too, which will be affected by field conditions.

I see a lot of screens and toss plays today, maybe try to attack the edges by getting the LBs to follow motion, and then run to the opposite side.

I know SF is claiming they need additional interior linemen active because of illness etc, but how many DNPs for Drake Jackson before we start getting concerned?

It is weird, but I think he's the starter at DE next season opposite Bosa.

Willis and McGill have been playing well, so I get keeping them both active, but I'd rather have Jackson over Danny Gray today.

I would be more worried if their other edge rushers sucked. Plus, Bosa's snaps will be increased during the playoffs somewhat. But yeah, would definitely be a better sign for the future if he was a no doubt start.

In the immortal words of Dan Fouts "No holding anything back"

Cmac only goes for 2 once a day after his morning coffee.

Run the damn ball.

Shanahan passing 19 times while running 11 times in the first half.

What is wrong with him?
Well, Seattle was selling out to stop the run. Other than the long one by McCaffrey, nothing much there. Was glad to see it actually.

Same with when they were up by two scores. Figured they would try to pound it. Nope. Two passes and a Deebo TD. Shanahan finally has a QB he trusts.

After going 4-4 today, Robbie Gould is now 25 for 25 in his career in the playoffs.

One of the biggest mistakes the Bears made over the past 10 years was giving up on one of the best kickers in the history of the league after a down season.

Kickers will never get the praise that some of them deserve, but Robbie Could has shown he can kick well in any condition and I hope he gets Chance to win a Super Bowl or NFC title with a kick that would cement a hall of Fame career, imo

The 49ers offense racked up 505 yds. of offense, marking the 3rd time in franchise history that the team registered 500-or-more yds. in a playoff game [579 yds. vs. GB (1/12/13) & 537 yds. at Mia. (1/20/85)].

It will be raining for the game Saturday which will add a wrinkle.

Rainy and windy. Gusts to like 20mph or something.
Would seem to favor the 49ers based on running game and shorter passing game.
Hopefully the weather won't be as bad as it was in the Bears game this year or Washington game a couple of years ago, but the inclement weather seems to be more of an equalizer than something good teams can take advantage of.
I honestly think it depends on the makeup of the teams playing. Being a good defensive team with a strong running game and playmakers that thrieve on RAC on short passes makes it less of a concern to me. A team like say the Vikings that have a poor run D and normally play in a dome would be a bigger issue.

Most recent report I saw was that heavy winds and rain should end by about noon, with lighter wind (@ 10mph) and light showers through the game. If that's true, the biggest thing will be keeping the field in decent shape until afternoon, and then they should be fine.

:moneybag::moneybag::moneybag: I was not in a good place. Glad my "info" paid off, as did my team.

I think SF will be fine next week, but in Philly for NFC has got me worried.

Seattle didn't belong in the playoffs anyway. The refs horrible calls in the Rams game cheated the Lions out of the playoffs. From what I read there is a big inquiry going on about that. Maybe they just like Pete Carroll.

Not gonna lie, I was sweating at halftime.
I dunno. Seahawks played a perfect half and Niners made a bunch of mistakes and yet were only down 1. I personally thought it was obvious they would pull away eventually.
I really think the nfl has told the 9ers to limit cmc touches in the first half to keep the games close for a bit and not tank ratings.

Just looked this up because I noticed we seem to win the opening coin toss a LOT. We in fact do.

In 2022, the 49ers won 14 of 17 coin tosses (plus the one last night vs Seattle). The only ones we didn't win were week 1 @ Chicago, week 2 vs Seattle, and week 14 vs Tampa.

I had wondered if coin tosses would coincide with wins and losses. Maybe they do. Putting our defense on the field first, and getting first possession in the 2nd half seems to be working. I wonder what the results would have been had wlthat been flipped and we went 3-14 on coin flips and didn't have so many games where our offense got the ball first after half time adjustments.

Yes I was bored this morning lol

49ers have now scored 37-plus points in four straight games. They had scored 37 or more just four times in their previous 52 games.

I guess the 2019 offense was a top 5 unit too, but I haven't felt this confident a Niners team could go up and down and score with anyone since Kaepernick was lighting everyone up in 2012.

As previously mentioned, the fix is in. If the coin toss results had been flipped CMAC would have just scored earlier and more often and just killed the TV ratings.

Interesting and yes, you must have been really bored :shades:

Cowboys would be more fun but I think it’s gonna be TB.
Agree

Remember reading a quote from Joe Namath when I was a kid, talking about if he would rather play the Raiders or the Chiefs in the playoffs:

"The Chiefs would be an easier game but the Raiders would be more fun to beat".

Kind of how I feel here. Brady is a statue and the 49ers pass rush will thrive. But beating Dallas always has a little extra joy in it. Still holding a little grudge from them knocking the 49ers out of the playoffs all those times in the 70s and 90s I guess.

To be honest, I really dont care either way.

Living in Tampa, it'd be nice if Brady loses, just to put an end to the constant local Brady talk and coverage. At the same time, I'd love for it to be the Niners that end his season.

Dak, Brady...whatever. The Weather looks good and we know what's at stake.
