We're diving into True Detective. The one with Harrelson/McConaughey is a satisfying slow burn so far.
It's phenomenal. Up there with The Wire season 4 for best seasons of a show all-time.

The subsequent seasons do fall off significantly.
I must be in the minority. I enjoyed S1 of True Detective, but wouldn't rank it as an all timer because it was only OK until the last few episodes.

Not sure if this was already mentioned in here, but for reality TV and/or comedy fans, there's a reboot of The Joe Schmo Show that's starting on TBS tonight. The original show was :moneybag:

First episode was disappointing. I’ll give this week’s a watch but probably pull the plug if it doesn’t improve.

2 wasn't much better :sadbanana:
I'm in the middle of a lot of shows right now, so this is good info for my schedule to avoid.

Currently viewing:

Preacher (up to S4 and it definitely needs to wrap up...started fantastic, but losing steam in a big way)
Mythic Quest (up to S2- can't believe I slept on this one)
Prime Target (new on Apple, Ep2 or 3.... kinda sorta interesting, but also feeling kinda sorta dopey)
100 Years of Solitude (binged the first 4 eps or so, and had to back away... both to make it last, but also because my heart wasn't really in it)
Traitors US (current season... I just don't like these reality "star" shows- but it's the last of the shows the entire family still watches together)
The OA (S1 rewatch because we thought 13yo floppinha would dig it. she does so far, but they're just getting to the jazz-hands- the only thing I really remember from this- so we'll see...)

Cross - I'm like 7 or 8 episodes in. I'll stick it out to see how it ends but this is truly a terrible show. It's disappointing too, because I generally enjoy Alex Cross stuff. The writing is just absolutely horrendous - like a child wrote it. Also - and this is a criticism I've also had with the Patterson books - but the Cross family never feels realistic. And, one thing I HATE about cop shows is when they spend too much time with the killer. That's not the interesting part of the show. It's just serial killer porn at that point. And half the episodes are the crazy serial killer playing with his victim. So dumb.

Very disappointed in this show.

I started Mythic Quest based on your posts. It's fantastic. How did I miss it?

Just finished Manhunt OJ Simpson on Netflix. Like most, I have been over saturated with OJ in my life, but. Solid watch. Well made. Had members from both sides of legal case. Had LAPD people involved. Family members. I had forgotten how crazy this case was. Just remarkable he got off. How did they not have the blood fingerprint on the gate in the case? That damn white Bronco chase messed up me watching my boy Michael Jordan in the finals. Ha ha

Only 2 more episodes left of Landman. :wall:
So bad, so boring. I don't know how anyone enjoys this. Billy Bob is the only thing keeping me in. I doubt I'd watch another season unless the last 2 episodes blow me away.

no idea. I figured it had ended... I'm only partway through what's already out.

Yes.
2 episodes for season 4 are out. 3rd episode in the first week of February.

Finished watching Black Doves on Netflix. I thought it was good. Some plausibility issues in it, but nothing unrecoverable, that's somewhat in the nature of the genre. Leaned a little hard on the various love stories, but, again, not unrecoverable. I'd like to see a second season, hopefully focus a bit more on the spy game, less on the soap opera relationship type stuff. I bought Kiera Knightly as a 008 kind of operative, where initially I didn't think she'd pull it off. More of that.

Beast Games Ep 8
10 remaining for $5mil
Winner of the island and winner of the Lambo are gone.

Non-elimination bonus episode, participants new jerseys 1thru10.
Rooms with lasers. $250k to the last 1 'alive'.

Easiest room =
flat floor = 5 of 10 succeed

Room 2 = 10 minute timer (for all) + balance beam + moving platform = all 5 succeed

Room 3 = 4 lanes with crossing laser beams + randomized spotlight rays going down the lanes (can duck under and they can cross over to other lanes) = 4 of 5 succeed

Room 4 = Laser 'prison' with 10 hour timer - when laser wall drops they have 3.5seconds to get to safety = 7 hours in and all surprisingly awake enough to see the wall drop and sprint = all 4 succeed

if they complete the next room while holding a sponsored power drink they get $10k
Room 5 = jump to platforms (longer legged players) while lasers on and/or run the floor to platforms when the lasers turn off = 3 succeed and get bonus (4th still given the $10k as he barely caught a partial laser)

Self-withdraw and get a Tesla worth $40k (all passed on it)
Room 6 = 2 paths that are very tight to shimmy thru - 1 is a dead end = all succeed
Thinking outside the box, contestant asks to jump over a chest high wall of lasers on the side of the room to walk down the side and jump over again - allowed to do it. Uses wall not built for his weight to go up, but makes it.

Room 7 = only 3 lasers - 1 up/down, 1 side to side, 1 high to low - guy sees the path to take and sprints before they even say to start (safe). Another double dutch jumps and matrix bends to avoid. = 2 of 3 succeed

Haven't slept all night - 5am - wait a few more hours
Final room = combination of all the previous levels - players enter on opposite/equal sides and need to compete until 1 gets hit by a laser OR touch the cube of money first (can't just stop and stay safe). Go fast or go safe? = 1 succeeds
2nd place got $10k

----
Random part of show has me guessing who/what this is. No clue who the dude is as they are outside bundled up and wearing a beanie. Apparently he's the guy that came in 2nd place above. No clue how he won the side challenge to possibly win a red Lambo. Must pass 4 phases.

Phase 1:
24 hours to build a wall to protect a red Lambo from 10,000 machine gun bullets - shopping list of items cost $78000 to build.
Shipping containers with refrigerators, pipeline tube, vans, wall of junk cars + huge water containers, thick piles of cinder blocks, etc.
No bullet gets through = the red Lambo with $100k in the passenger seat moves to phase 2.

24+ hours - No sleep yet.
Phase 2:
24 hours to build a soft landing for the Lambo being lifted 100 feet in the air by a crane and dropped.
Suggestions? 150 Pillows, 150 mattresses, blankets, 3 bouncy castles! Fell asleep for longer than expected. 2000 Cardboard boxes, bubble wrap. More bubble wrap around the suspended Lambo - nice try, but failed to do that. Safe landing and car starts up = move to phase 3.
Appraiser says dented bumper = -$10k in car value

Disassemble safe drop zone and get some sleep
Phase 3:
24 hours to build defense to protect Lambo from 10 cars that are on fire and dropped from the crane. Shipping container cut out bottom to put over Lambo. Remove all wood so it doesn't burn easily. 2 more containers angled to rest on each side of the main one to protect/apply pressure downward. Landfill side areas with dirt. Some container crushing, bowing, and heat - but onto phase 4

No sleep
Phase 4:
24 hours to stop a train from ramming into the Lambo. Derail the train if possible. Rail ties, water containers, mattresses, containers, cars, whatever on the tracks. Successful stoppage of the train. WIn the Lambo and the $100k.

Odd episode.

I'm surprised there isn't more Severance talk in here. Just finished season one, looking forward to the rest.

Severance was my #1 show of 2022 and one of the top shows for me of the past decade. Like others, I'm holding off a bit on starting season 2.
Same.

Funny how I recommend it (to everyone) and half love it and the other half say it’s slow and weird.

Um, yeah. Is slow and weird not your thing?!?!

I like the weird but it could use just a touch more pace.

Traitors watchers:

Just binged the uk seasons on a few flights for work. Love it. I assume the UK seasons are the best? Can’t imagine the others being better given how this show is so built for UK sensibilities.

Which country should I go to next? Hesitate to go with US as it has reality stars but am in your hands.

Lastly, the “seer” twist ruined the game. They should light that on fire.

Cheers and thanks for any suggestions.
Australia 1, New Zealand 2 and Canada 2 are my favorite non-US or UK seasons.

Australia 1 has an incredible cast and episode 9 is an all-timer.

New Zealand 2 may be my favorite season overall. Outstanding gameplay (save for a few idiot faithful that we see every season), interesting contestants, and some decisions we have never seen in any other version. Beware that the first episode spoils the results of New Zealand 1.

Canada 2 has hilariously terrible gameplay. If you watch Survivor, it’s the equivalent of Survivor 46.

Of the others:

New Zealand 1 is good, but the cast is mostly D- and F-list celebrities and many of them know each other, so it feels like a parlor game.

Canada 1 is similar to Canada 2 but not as good. It was the first season to broadcast discussion of the meta-game.

Australia 2 is unique because its second half is a total sh!tshow but the ending is satisfying, so don’t give up if you get frustrated, and you will.

I watched Canada 1 and 2, thanks to you. I actually liked 1 almost as much as 2. I still have not watched your fave, NZ 2.

US 3 is shaping up to be outstanding right now.
Watching Canada 1 right now. Not nearly as good as any UK season with respect to the host, cast and overall aesthetic. The gameplay is laughably bad at times. Rick Campanelli ( longtime host of MuchMusic - Canada's MTV) may be the dumbest player I have seen yet, and that is really saying something. Not done the season yet, but it's been all downhill since Fierce left.

Keep going, as is inherent to the format, the ending is compelling.

Rick Campanelli is a genius compared to some of the people on Canada 2. But they're hilariously dumb.

Cross - I'm like 7 or 8 episodes in. I'll stick it out to see how it ends but this is truly a terrible show. It's disappointing too, because I generally enjoy Alex Cross stuff. That's too bad. As a fan of Aldis Hodge from his Leverage days and want him to get more roles like this. Been meaning to check it out, just hadn't heard good or bad on it.

Traitors US 3 episode 6:

I can't believe Boston Rob is still in the game. He's doing everything you shouldn't as a traitor -- being loud at the roundtable, murdering people who have openly accused him -- and still isn't getting banished. He got a huge assist this episode from Wes, who own-goaled himself out of the game. "If you vote for me, I'm coming after you" may be the dumbest thing anyone has ever said at any roundtable. No one wants to play with someone who's going to make the game about personal vendettas. This was on top of the toxic masculinity he was displaying during strategic discussions and earlier in the roundtable. He thought he could brute-force his way to a win like he did on The Challenge. But the Traitors doesn't work that way. You have to develop alliances and give others a reason not to vote you out. By contrast, Boston Rob has aligned himself with some of the quieter people and is listening to them, or at least making them think he is. People are sticking up for him, whether it's because they think he is truly on their side, or whether it's because they think he's a traitor and are waiting until the end to boot him.

I love how the edit is clowning on Sandoval, going out of its way to show how none of the other contestants are taking him seriously. He'll probably go far because he's obviously too dumb to pull off being a traitor, and he has zero clue so there is no reason for the traitors to murder him.

We have seen traitor-on-traitor violence but this season may be the first case of traitor-on-traitor-on-traitor violence. The three of them can't stand each other and it's hilarious.

This was a top-tier episode, as was episode 4. Probably the best 2 episodes we have seen in the US version.

Traitors UK 3 final thoughts:

This season had its moments but was clearly inferior to UK 1 and 2. Casting missed the mark in many cases. They have always cast highly emotional people, but this season they cast too many people who were whiny, clique-y and took everything personally. I wanted quite a few of them off my screen ASAP, and at least a couple of them should not have passed the psych exam. Introducing the seer when they did was also a mistake. It left the others no choice but to boot both the seer and the see-ee. If they are going to use this again, it should be earlier in the game, and preferably the selection of the seer and the seer's choice of who to learn about should be done in secret.

We should consider Jake one of the best faithfuls to ever play, though. He was a successful traitor hunter, and they rarely make it to the end. But he did, thanks to his social game and the traitors' bad decisions about who to murder.

I gave a review a few pages back. I didn't dislike as much, but I can see where whoknew's criticism comes from. I'd still suggest giving it a try.

He'll always be "Rick the Temp" to me.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine just seems to be my airplane show. Every time I'm on a plane, I watch it and laugh a lot, but when I'm off the plane, it's dead to me. I guess I'll work my way through the show over the next 10 years of flights (121 episodes left to watch).

I wonder if anybody else has bought into the MoneyLion contest they are promoting. I usually don’t bother with this crap, but for some reason, I’m on board with this one. I have 37 entries so far, and think I will stick with it, at least until the first drawings. With over 1000 people guaranteed to win $1000 or more, who knows? Maybe I could be able to buy name brand groceries again for a couple of months.

Cutting my losses after two episodes of Night Agent season 2. Completely uninteresting.
You'll be glad to know that you missed some bad, silly episodes and it's perfectly set up for a Season 3.

"I just want to say from the bottom of my heart that I'm sorry I killed your family. They didn't deserve that. But for right now you just have to trust me."
*grabs person and drags them along*
"Hey Rose, come on, we gotta go!"
"Hold on, I just hacked Interpol's database using the TCP/IP of the dry cleaners across the street"
*they all stop*
