The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s 1. Goodfellas (31 Viewers)

Spoiler tags down?

Believe me, nothing - no amount of spoilers - will prepare you nor ruin anything about this movie should you opt to watch it. It's.....different.
Actually, that’s probably what I seek out most in movies, more so than suffering or depravity. I want to see something unexpected, that makes me think. Kinda the anti-Marvel genre.

Well, before you get any more spoilers, I'd settle in and give it a watch.

Maybe invite your in-laws over and make some JiffyPop.
My wife still talks about one of our formative weekends on the Big Island. We biked to Volcanoes National Park from our rental, which was just a short 5 miles away, on a gentle hill.

Unfortunately, a big storm hit, forcing us to cycle in the deluge. We picked up groceries in the small town next to the park, along with some movies for the rainy days: Into the Wild, Adaptation., and Goliath. Soaked and covered with road grime, we returned to the treehouse.

Now, Mrs. P is among the most sweet and innocent people you’ll ever meet. She grew up in a devout Catholic household, only watching wholesome stuff like Leave it to Beaver, Little House on the Prairie, and the Smurfs. Neither of her parents curse (nor did she, until recently). She still lived with them when we started dating, in her late 30’s. She also is a big animal lover; to this day will tear up/avert her eyes when animal cruelty ads air on tv.

Her movie favorites are mostly animated, with happy endings.

Anyway, she was taken aback by my selections, especially the last one. Without giving away too much, It’s about a guy who has hit rock bottom, with nothing left other than his beloved cat, Goliath. Well, the cat goes missing, he goes a little off the rails, and deduces he can use the sex offender registry to locate the catnapper. The film’s climax involves a weed eater, pepper spray, and an electrolarynx.

If I’m understanding your film reviews, sounds like Saltburn + Boogie nights would make a great follow up for our next date night.

:lmao:

Yup, press on, Soldier. Invite some neighbors too.
Saltburn and The Menu for date night tonight. I liked the former better, though both were decent, not great.

Wife was glued to her phone. 🤣

She promised to pay attention to Boogie Nights sometime in the next few days, as I'm officially trialing Amazon Prime for the next month (Look at ME!!!)

Did she put her phone down for the final couple mins of Saltburn?

Alright, I am going to watch a little Boogie Nights to psyche myself up to watch Midsommar.
Ya know what would make the Sister Christian scene less tense? Weed.
Ya know what makes the opening of Midsommar 5x more terrifying? You guessed it.

Good thing that wasn't in the cards last night because I did a 2nd movie comparison from a couple great new directors with Midsommar and The Lighthouse. The Northman and Beau Is Afraid will be another fun double feature.

No, she put it on vibrate.

What are four movies I didn't like at all?

here is what our combined rankings were:
no madonna? WTF

To be fair, we didn't do documentaries at all for our lists. Foreign language is a go, but we stay away from docs. Regardless, I am guessing the movie I saw the most times in the theater would miss both our top 100s.

The top ones I wrote down for the 90s were We Were Kings, Hearts of Darkness, Brother's Keeper, 4 Little Girls, and American Movie.

You are on board for their 1st movies, but not the rest? PTA and Ari Aster are my type of directors. I seem to appreciate Eggers' movies, but they aren't ones I am overly compelled to rewatch. PTA and Aster movies I am just drawn to and want to revisit, despite the often dark subject matter. If I wanted epic or action, I would give all the money to Nolan and Villeneuve, if I wanted drama or darkly funny I would go to Aster and Anderson.

No way, never seen, never seen, just seen the good parts.

A League Of Their Own is an American classic. It gets all of the good things right about nostalgia trips. It's quite excellent, IMO. But I do think you have to like baseball. Hey, you don't even have to like Lori Petty to love her in her role. She's Lori Petty!

I mean Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnell, Lori Petty, Madonna, and others are in the movie and I still like it! And Tawm Hanks! Who doesn't like Tawm Hanks?!

The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is also very good.
