****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (1 Viewer)

My guy tells me SF crushes NO this week after their loss. They are going to be pissed. I know NO is a tough place to play but I have a funny feeling that Harbaugh has them ready to go. Its tough for me to imagine them losing 2 in a row

I'd almost rather have NO win and put SF another game down to us. Really wouldn't mind having that first wildcard and drawing the NFC east champ and then getting an op to return the favor we owe Seattle in Seattle.

That said, if SF does win, we control our destiny to the number 2 seed and Monday night becomes more important to us.

Agree BnB, you want the top wildcard spot because let's face it…Dallas/Philly/NYG(not done yet) is going to be easier than going somewhere else. I would want Carolina to try and get 2 playoff games in and earn some playoff experience for Cam. This defend is going to stay strong, next season bring in better weapons at WR, little more along the OL, should be a playoff contender for a while.

I really have no words at this point...unreal.
I do. The axe should drop. This guy can't coach when coaching is needed most.
I don't know what the deal is. One week the offense will show up, the next, the defense. They NEVER seem to be ALL ready to go. The first half of this game was just brutal. I felt like Shula had been listening to local sports talk radio and just threw long ball after long ball regardless of success or rhythm/flow. The scoring drive at the end of the half should have been the approach at the beginning of the game. This team has no identity on offense and is inconsistent on defense. They don't have a bunch of noobs on either side of the ball and have plenty of talent to win DESPITE the coaching staff.
I don't think Shula was listening to sports talk radio. Rivera said he wanted more big plays in the passing game, and Shula obviously listened to him. The team still cannot close out games. Richardson probably didn't let Rivera go last season, because he didn't want to have to pay him for two more years.I don't think the axe should drop on Rivera now. That would be an Al Davis move. Let the season play out.
Why? You act as if we don't know what's going to happen. I suppose there's a slim chance that things change but there's NO evidence out there to suggest that things are going to be any different this year than the last two. It's even more clear to me now that Shula just doesn't get it and really has no clue on how to get an offense started. Same goes for Rivera. I don't see what waiting til the end of the season is going to do for this team. I don't really care why Richardson didn't let Rivera go. That's not my problem. Right now we have an owner who gives MAYBE two ####s about the fanbase and a fanbase tied to a team with no real recourse because of the PSLs. I've not heard anything from the fans that the national "experts" aren't saying themselves. Everyone sees what is going on and quite frankly, I don't really see the point in waiting til the end of the year to have another losing season.
I'd say that slim chance has arrived.

So I was just watching some ESPN clips and apparently now we have to also beat the Pats to prove we are for real. What's next suit up the 72 Dolphins? Geesh.
As I said before....all the boxes had been checked and I fully expected more boxes to be added....that's what they do. I hope the team takes it as a challenge.
The box that needs to be checked is the playoff box. Doesn't matter if they win or lose next Monday on the road to checking that box. Of course a win would make it easier.

1. Seattle 9-1: 2 game cushion and an easy schedule. 4 homes games to 2 road games.

2. New Orleans 7-2: They play Seattle on the road so there's hope of catching them. That said, they have the conference tiebreaker record so we would likely have to sweep them to win the division.

3. Detroit 6-3: Just putting them here as a place holder. Chicago and Green Bay both one game back.

4. NFC East winner: There won't be a wildcard from the group.

That leaves 2 wildcard spots.

Carolina 6-3: Is in the driver's seat. 6-2 in conference.

SF 6-3: Carolina has the tiebreaker over them unless we get into a 3 way. 3-2 in conference.

Chicago 5-4: Beat GB head to head, one game remaining between the two. 3-4 in conference.

GB 5-4: 3-3 in conference

Arizona 5-4: 4-4 in conference

SF plays at NO this week. Assuming a NO win and a Carolina loss and Chi/GB/Ari all win, we'll have a 5 way tie and the best conference record.

I think wins against Tampa, Atlanta, Miami, and NYJ are enough to get to the post season. Slip up in one of these games and we'll need a win against NE or NOx2 to make it.
You expected them to be in the playoffs this year?

Got that right....this is an instance that I am perfectly happy to admit I was wrong. I didn't see this coming with this crew. Turn arounds like this are only seen in movies usually.

Why assume a Panthers loss? The book on beating Brady is to force him off his spot. Harass him and stay in his face. Our D should be able to do that with 4 guys. Just like they have all season. It won't be an easy win but I figure we are at least even odds to pull it off. And NO isn't unstoppable.

No I didn't, but that is on pretty much every team's checklist before the season. I think it's on Rivera's checklist if he wants to keep his job.

I was referring to the post saying it was necessary for them to beat the Pats to prove they are for real. I was showing it really isn't a factor.

BassNBrew Heirechy of Being For Real

1. Win the Super Bowl

2. Go to the Super Bowl

3. Win a playoff game

4. Make the playoffs

5. Suck for the best draft pick possible

Gun to my head having to wager $100 on this game and I couldn't answer right now. I'd being leaning Pats, but that might be becuase I win in either outcome. I just don't like betting against Brady and Belicheck is something like 10-1 in his last 11 after a bye week (although they haven't fared well against the spread.

Yeah it's hard to bet against those guys. Bill is going to have a hard time picking someone to stop though. Other than Denver we are the only team with 4 receivers over 300 yards IIRC and of course in the running game it is a multi-headed monster. So they are going to have a more general defensive strategy I think. And if our D can bring it like they did Sunday Brady is going to have a tough game. His RB is no Gore or AP and we stopped those guys. And our rush should get there fairly often. I just feel like we have an even chance here.

Are you talking just pure actual wide receivers?

I'm coming in here to admit I was 100% wrong about this team. I thought the abyss was waiting, and the fall would be long and hard. Last week was what I was really waiting to see before I fully bought in - beat a very good team on the road when you don't have your A game. Admittedly didn't get to watch the game, but I watched the gamecast pretty closely, and was very happy to see them pull out the W.

At this point, Playoffs are likely barring an epic collapse. NE will be tough, but it's winnable. Even with that loss and two losses to NO (which I think a split could happen there), they're still only at 6 losses. Tampa, ATL, NYJ, and Miami are teams they should handle, which would get them to 10-6, something I thought was imposisble going into this season.

Denver has 5 with 300+ rec yards, 4 with over 500 yards. I think they included that caveat when mentioning the Carolina stat.

So many ways to go with this...I'll just say thank you.

Anyone else excited about this game to the point it's distracting them this week? I feel like a kid at xmas...it's going to be a long wait until Monday night.

Thoughts on starting Vereen against the Panthers defense this week? My other backs are Murray (bye), SJax (sucks), Bell, Ridley, Johnson. I'm not seeing anything in the rear view mirror that would give an indication of how a back like Vereen would fare against the Panthers.

I'm excited for the prospects of getting to see the game live as a displaced fan without having to go find a corner TV at a bar... and I'm excited to see how this team plays in the limelight.

They've answered all my questions thus far... now let's see them step up and show up against a good team on a national stage. I think they'll be ready, and I'd bet BOA is rocking Monday night... Lord knows I wish I could be there.

Hoping they pull it out, keep winning, and manage to get some more games flexed into the Sunday night spot down the stretch - maybe one of those NO games.

Pats `n Cats.

That's going to be a big MNF for CAR DST, Cam, and like 6 different Pats & their DST. Big game FF-wise, end of the week, this will determine many FF seasons even.

I'm curious which NFL team you Carolina fans rooted for before the Panthers were born.
Chicago Bears. For you youngsters, my best memory growing up...1979

That December 16th was surreal, and the way it turned out would have been impossible for a Hollywood screenwriter to imagine. Chicago awoke that morning to snow and bitter cold, and to the news that Bears President George “Mugs” Halas had died suddenly of a heart attack. Subplots for this sad day for the Bears would be that in order to make the playoffs, Tampa Bay would need to lose to Kansas City, or an improbable set of circumstances would have to occur. If Tampa won, Dallas would need to defeat Washington and the Bears would have to beat St. Louis. Not only this, but the combined difference of the scores between the two games would have to add up to at least 34 points in the Bears favor, due to playoff tiebreaker calculations. Additionally, Walter Payton was battling rookie St. Louis RB Ottis “OJ” Anderson for the NFC rushing title. Payton would need to outrush Anderson by 100 yards to win the title.
Payton seemed to take all of these challenges in stride. T Ted Albrecht commented in **** Wittingham’s book What Bears They Were that the RB was untying the referee’s shoelaces in every pile on the game’s opening drive, and Payton even swapped helmets with Willie McClendon when he scored the game’s first touchdown. With karma like that, fans had to know they were in for a treat, and they were. The Bears pulled out every stop, and defeated St. Louis 42-6 in Doug Buffone’s last game at Soldier Field.
Knowing that this huge victory wasn’t all the team needed, Bear players huddled around their car radios after the game. They listened to updates on the Dallas-Washington game, which the Redskins had been winning 17-0 in the third quarter. Dallas pulled out a 35-34 victory (with 39 seconds on the clock), and Chicago was in the playoffs for the second time in three years.

Routed for the Super Chargers and Fouts on the AFC. Gunz roots for them now so they are dead to me.

Interesting. Figured the loyalties would have been with a regional team -- Dolphins, Falcons, etc.

Edit: I'm bad at geography. Are the Redskins even closer?

I grew up in Chicago and STL.

Most oldies around here are either Skins fans or Dallas fans (go figure). Now you'll find more Steeler and Pats fans than Skins fans. Bascially 80% of this city is transplants, most from the rust belt and NE. In addition to flooding our stadium with opposing jerseys, they've brought us a choo-choo trains and higher taxes.

eta - Falcons always stunk so while most root for the Braves, you can't find an ATL football fan.

NE posses an interesting challenge for Car, particularly the D. NE has a great oline and Car has a great front 7. Rock, meet hard place. Now one would think the same thing about SF who also has a great oline. The difference is, the QBs. Keap is no where near the developed passer as Brady nor does he have the pocket presence of Brady. Keap was a major contributor to Car success yesterday as he, and he does this a lot, bailed on clean pockets and tried to force plays that weren't there. Brady will do no such thing. For as good as the Car front 7 is, their secondary really isn't very good. They are going to have a major mismatch trying to cover Gronk and I'll bet NE spreads them out a lot because of this weakness.
I agree. The Pats are by far the most diverse the Panthers have played since Week 1 and right now the Pats look dangerous. As good as the D has played they really haven't had to play a top notched pass offense perhaps all year. The top pass offense they have faced is Atlanta but that comes with a big asterisk since they had no Jones or White.

So far the Panthers have played:

1. Seattle - 11th ranked Offense (Wilson had 320 yards and a TD)

2.Buffalo - 16th Ranked Offense (Manuel had 296 yards and a TD)

3. NYG - 23rd Ranked Offense (Manning had only 119 yards and no Td's)

5. Arizona - 27th Ranked Offense (Palmer had 175 yards and a TD)

6. Minnesota -28th Ranked Offense (Cassel had 241 yards and a TD)

7.StLouis Rams - 26th Ranked Offense (Bradford had 255 yards and a TD)

8. TB Bucs - 31st Ranked Offense (Glennon had 275 yards and a TD)

9. Atlanta Falcons - 14th Ranked Offense - *But no Jones or White* (Ryan had 219 yards and a TD)

10 SF 49ers - 22nd Ranked Offense - (Kaepernick had 91 yards and No TD but he lost Davis during the game and 49ers only thew the ball 22 times)

So they haven't played a top 10 offense yet this year and 6 of their 9 games have come against the bottom ten offenses in the league and another game against Atlanta without Jones or White.

I think it is safe to say that the Pats are the most dynamic offense the Panthers have played against since at least Week 1 when Wilson went for over 300 yards against them. Even with all their injuries at WR in the first half the Pats are still the 12th ranked offense in the league. I suspect they are top 5 from here out.

I'm curious which NFL team you Carolina fans rooted for before the Panthers were born.
I was a Falcon fan due to location (still a Braves fan though) but changed to Carolina when they were born. I also pulled for the Vikings back in the Tarkenton/Chuck Foreman days and was a fan of the Chargers in the AFC. Loved to watch Fouts, C. Joiner, Winslow, and my favorite, Wes Chandler.

Well I'm originally from South Florida. So I grew up a Dolphins fan. Moved up to Charlotte in 89 and stuck with the Dolphins. But as the team changed and the players I liked retired or moved on I drifted away a bit. Went to the games to show that we would support a team here. Went down to a couple of games when the Panthers played out of town in the inaugural season and just grew into a fan as it went along. Now I am all in on the Panthers.

The defense is better than it was when it held the Seahawks to 12 points.

None. I only watched football occasionally prior to the Panthers being born, and didn't have an allegiance to any teams. I was a minor fan for the first few years of the team, and oddly, became a huge fan during the 1-15 season. That was the first year where I made it a point to watch every game. Since that point, I've been a diehard.

I do have a miniature Bengals helmet from when I was a child, but I assume I was attracted to it by the design rather than any interest in the team.

I didn't get into the NFL until we had a team  Here in the Carolinas when I was a kid you got to watch either Dallas (not a chance in hell I'm pulling for those jackoffs), Washington (meh) or Atlanta (terrible). I've never pulled for anyone else.

The Redskins. They were on TV a lot here in NC compared to other teams. DC is just as close as Atlanta. It's actually closer to me here in Greensboro. I also loved the Skins logo (still do). My grandfather was part Cherokee, and he loved his Skins, and he loved the fact their mascot and name was Indian related (Native Americans for you politically correct). He would be disappointed if he were still alive knowing they are being pressured to change their name.

I'm going to cut and paste it in the Skins thread.

Thoughts on starting Vereen against the Panthers defense this week? My other backs are Murray (bye), SJax (sucks), Bell, Ridley, Johnson. I'm not seeing anything in the rear view mirror that would give an indication of how a back like Vereen would fare against the Panthers.
I think Vereen could be a sneaky play this week, as I'm worried about Ridley's effectiveness against the stout CAR line. But, since we probably won't even know about Vereen's availability until sometime on Monday, he remains a bit of risk. He could get 4-5 touches to ease him back in, or he could go all Andre Brown and get 3x those touches. Trying to guess what Belichick will do with his RBs is a risky proposition in any given week.

Just got my tickets today for the drubbing Carolina is lay on Miami next week but I want to see the Panthers, the mojo is running high for them.

For those who grew up in Charlotte I think it was mostly a split between the Redskins and Falcons. More Redskins because the Falcons were always awful. My wife still claims she's a Redskins fan but can't name one player.

Panthers have a pretty difficult schedule coming up. Let's see if Cam can step up and put this team on his back. The 2 games vs the Saints should be pretty good. I'm pulling for Carolina in the NFC South since the Bucs suck so bad.

Fortunately due to the D playing well, Cam hasn't had to put the team on his back. Cam not feeling like he has to do it all has resulted in less turnovers.

The Bucs have had a turbulent year, but I've been impressed with Glennon. With the chaotic environment he all of a sudden became a starter in as a rookie, I think he has done well. The tension has been high with that club, and it's been a news media circus. The starting QB is now with another team after rumors and leaks, the HC is probably going to be fired, they have lost their first and second string RB, and a starting WR, and through all this Glennon is making that offense work.

Well SF let us down. I would have loved to gone in to this game with a chance to tie it up with New Orleans. Today is going to suck. I am 5 hours from home and I have a long bid meeting to attend. I should make it home just before the game starts though.

Fortunately, Cam doesn't have to put this team on his back. He's not played particularly well the last few weeks, but the defense is a beast. He can't turn the ball over tonight, but as long as he does his best Russell "the game manager" Wilson impression, they have a pretty good chance of winning. I think he finally gets that he doesn't have to be the man every week, but he certainly has to do his share.
