The Great 2020 All Time Television Draft: The Simpsons is judged the greatest show of all time (2 Viewers)

Fairly deep category, but Doc is the GOAT

Michael "Doc" Emrick - Sports Play by Play

Mike Emrick
ll
Michael "Doc" Emrick (born August 1, 1946) is a retired American network television play-by-play sportscaster and commentator noted mostly for his work in hockey. He was the lead announcer for NHL national telecasts on both NBC and NBCSN. Among the many awards Emrick has received is the NHL's Lester Patrick Award in 2004, making him the first of only five to have received the award for media work, and the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008. He has also won eight national Emmy Awards for excellence in sports broadcasting, the only hockey broadcaster to be honored with even one. On December 12, 2011, Emrick became the first member of the media to be inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.[] In 2017, Sports Illustrated listed Emrick as the greatest sportscaster of all time.[]

9.08 Friday Night Lights- Teen

Clear Eyes. Full Heart. Can't Lose.

High school football in Texas is the backdrop for what Time magazine calls "the greatest Teen drama of all time" You don't even need to like football to love this show. Its Characters, dialogue and documentary style camera work gives this show an realistic feel. It tackles tough issues that teens face from love and loss to drug use. This show doesn't dumb things down or hide the realism from its teen viewers, which I liked. I have also coached High school football for 24 years now, so this show was especially poignant. It my opinion is ranks up there with some of the best tv shows ever made.

was this or Jimmy McGill for me. Glad I wasnt the only one thinking it

9.6 - Lonesome Dove - Miniseries

Any time the conversation of miniseries comes up my mind immediately goes to this masterpiece.  I wanted to draft it several rounds ago but BL wisely said we could wait - smart guy that Bobby.

@mphtrilogy
You're in a brutal category, but this would have been my selection.

A+ book/A+ adaptation

Definitely on my short list for that category.

I wouldn't go that far.  He is good but he isn't even the best hockey guy I can think of.
Yep everybody has their faves especially on a sports forum, but the way he calls a game even to a casual fan he brings a level of excitement and energy that is unmatched IMHO and Hockey is so hard to call.  anyway.. there it is..

My problem (and it's not a huge problem) is that his excitement is always on.  It doesn't really follow the play so it gets to be noise sometimes.  Hockey has enough excitement it doesn't need to be manufactured and his style is manufactured at times.

I do agree hockey is extremely challenging (probably the most challenging of the big 4) and he does a good job with it.  I just think there are a few better hockey guys out there.  As you said, everyone has their favorites.

9.10 -  Roger Sterling - Supporting man 1990 - 2020

Pretty loaded category, but to me, this is what a great supporting character is - he's great in his own right, and might be some people's favorite character,  but he doesn't overshadow the lead (if you are the most popular / most memorable character on a show, are you really a supporting character?)

To prevent spotlighting...

I always felt there was a slight resemblance--more in bearing and build than direct looks--between Roger and **** Martin of Laugh-In, and I've always wondered if that was more than a coincidence.

Tolstoy selects 9.13 Jessica Fletcher, played by Angela Lansbury

tough call because she splits the divide, but going with her early work, Leading Woman Drama, 1971-1990

Lansbury was nominated for ten Golden Globes and 12 Emmy Awards, winning four Golden Globe awards. She holds the record for the most Golden Globe nominations and wins for Best Actress in a television drama series and the most Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

9.12 1990-2020 leading woman drama - Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss/Mad Men)

In a show called Mad Men about male mysognism, she was arguably the most important and best character.

Can’t dig deep right now for that “perfect pick”, so I’ll take one I’ve been kicking around for a bit. Other drafters have been nibbling around the edges of this category anyhow, so it’s probably time:

9.14: Vin Scully, Sports Play-by-Play

Incredibly, Scully called games featuring both Jackie Robinson and Clayton Kershaw.

My favorite sports announcer of all time, in a sport I don't care much about for a team I definitely don't care about.

I’m about to run into a meeting, so I’ll make my picks then do my writeups in a bit.

9.16 - Carmela Soprano - 91-20 Female Lead Drama

10.01 - American Idol - Reality

Back to @Doug B after @KarmaPolice skip

Sweet - meeting ended early. Time for my writeups.

9.16 - Carmela Soprano - 1991-2020 Leading Woman Drama

In a show and role where this character could have easily faded behind the huge gravity of the male lead, Edie Falco shone as Carmela.

6 Emmy nominations with 3 wins

2 golden globe wins and 3 screen actors guild wins

10.5 TV Documentary* - Planet Earth**

* With possibility of moving it into best foreign show.

** I interpret my selection as being an encompassment of both seasons (Planet Earth and Planet Earth II). I'd like a consensus ruling on this and if I must select a particular one then I will.

Only 1/5th the way through this and I have 0 clue where the judges will be going with stuff, especially categories that span all decades.  I will try one that has won 24 Emmys:

9.15:  THE DAILY SHOW  (VARIETY)

Phenomenal and I'm somewhat embarassed it wasn't on my short list.

Note: My aunt dated Craig Kilborn in high school. He's a nice guy.

Might be pushing the definition here, but the category is just "documentary".  I figured I would ask, but would get the stock "it's up to the judges" answer.   Looks like there will be movies, mini-series, and long running series.  Since zow just took my other one I was eyeing, I will through out:

10.02:  30 for 30 (Documentary)

I think this is fair for the category and a good pick.
