Tiger Woods (1 Viewer)

When you made this bet, what specific criteria did you think would constitute a win? A given age with fewer than a certain number of majors? I am guessing you didn't even contemplate such. You made a stupid bet without even thinking about the conditions that would actually grant you a victory.

I am not deriding you for making a stupid bet, as stuff happens. I would think that you do realize your mistake. But now you're acting like a spoiled, entitled brat expecting your opponent in the bet to acquiesce to some vague notion in your head of how the criteria should have been set.

Obviously Woods is a major underdog to catch Nicklaus. But it isn't impossible. People recover from injury. People come out of retirement. And we don't exactly have a great deal of historical data at our disposal to compute true odds. The number of people in the history of the world that won 14 majors by age 33 and then battled back and knee injuries along with spousal 9-irons to the face for the next several years is one.

I can't speak for Otis, but were I in his shoes I would be very close paying off had you not acted as you have. And that's probably not true anyway, as I am a softie and would probably pay you anyway.

But you don't deserve it. You deserve to be told to pound sand until Tiger dies with fewer than 18 majors.
Wow.  You are really passionate about this.   Thanks for your thoughts.

I'll be honest. I like zoonation. He's not a bad guy. But his complaining in here about a bet he as a grown man decided to make is a bit of a turn off. So I'm kind of with you. I'm not going to try and avoid paying him, and I'm sure eventually I will pay him. Just trying to figure out the right fair and reasonable time to do that. Doesn't seem like now is it.
I prefer to describe it as advocating my position. I have already said that I made a dumb bet.  I have already said that you hold all the cards in the determination of when you ultimately concede.   That doesn't mean I'm not going to try and convince you!

I'm not sure why some dude I've never heard of wrote a 500 word essay ripping me and calling me names.  Thought that was uncalled for.

Anyway. Have a great weekend GB.

He knows he can get to 30 majors easily. It's all part of the master plan right now. When he decides to take the golfing world by storm, he will start his run to 30 majors and they will label him the greatest athlete of all-time, stealing it from Tom Brady.

While I stand by the theme of my post, I did go overboard with the tone and I apologize for that. I caught up on the thread after an extended post-work happy hour and was a bit loose with the keystrokes.

It just hit two of my major pet peeves.

One, being overly certain of future events. I think in general, people are far too sure of their opinions of what will happen without good reason. When many considered passing Jack a foregone conclusion, I was on the opposite side. Not that I thought he wouldn't, but that it wasn't as sure a thing as many thought. Lots of stuff can happen.

Two, what I consider whining and you consider "advocating your position". I absolutely love games and gambling. From cards, fantasy football and spectator sports to live competition in golf, tennis, pool, pick-up basketball, really about anything. And I hate it when people try to gain what I consider to be undue advantages. I always try to ensure that when I win it's because I deserved to win, with no angle-shooting or anything resembling such.

So anyway, once again I am sorry for being overly harsh in a manner that you didn't deserve.

Julias Boros won two majors from 41 on (Woods is 41).  No one else has won more than one -- including Nicklaus.  Woods would need 4 or 5 (depending on the bet) and he hasn't played more than a few tournaments without his back getting reinjured in... three years now?

I was on the "anything is possible" bandwagon in 2012 when he was out, and in 2013 when he was the #1 player in golf.  But at this point, he's cooked.

The bet now should be whether or not he'll ever win a PGA tour event again.

What would the odds be 5-1 he never wins again?

I saw some odds back in November that had it roughly 5-1 that he wins an event in 2017, those are probably a bit longer now though. I'd think odds of him never winning again would be no worse than even.

So he's got access to the best doctors in the world and this is two years in a row with extended absences due to the back issues? Yeah, I'm sure he just needs some rest & rehab and he'll be lighting it up real soon.

Birdie on #3, bogey on #5. Even thru 9.

Wait, that's some guy named Wood. he's better than Tiger Woods.

the generation of guys that grew up watching and idolizing tiger is now playing against him and they have risen in talent to match him its not like it was when he was in his prime now there are hordes of guys who can win any week and are at or beyond his level i think he will never be a dominent force again as a result and hey soon the guys that grew up idolizing ricky and dustin and jason will be up and then tiger will be even further down the ladder its done and it could not happen to a nicer jagbag in my opinion take that to the bank brohans

From interview 6 months ago.

Rose: Do you believe you’ll get 18 majors?

Woods: To be honest with you, no.

Rose: You don’t?

Woods: No.

Rose: You’ve accepted that?

Woods: I’ve accepted I’m going to get more.

Hey Zoonation I bet you a rack that martians will never land on Earth.

:five years later:

WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU AREN'T PAYING NOW, IT'S BEEN, LIKE, A LONG LONG TIME, AND WE'VE SEEN EXACTLY ZERO MARTIANS!!!  OMG PONY UP

If I were you I wouldn't pay up yet based on the parameters of the bet.

That said, and to quote Colonel Trautman, "It's over Johnny."

I want to thank you for your courageous call on this matter Buzz.  It's nice to see someone around here gather several years of data before making their prognostication ...instead of firing from the hip all the time, that's just lazy.

Please keep fighting the good fight.
