4.03 Ronin, Car Chase

An underrated movie overall, the highlight of Ronin is John Frankenheimer's (a former amateur race car driver) 8 minute car chase No CGI here, this is full tilt boogie car chasin' through the streets and tunnels of Paris. The shots are tight but clean, no jittery cam work here to mess with the adrenaline rush.

The chase featured over 200 stunt drivers and numerous authentic car destructions.

I also like the fact that the driver of the lead car is a woman, which is pretty unusual in the oeuvre.

Looks like you are right about Foster - movie looked like it came out when she was 13. I just got the impression that she was 16+ playing a younger character for some reason.

I want to clarify that I think Do the Right Thing is a GREAT movie, one of the best of the last 30 years, and a great pick. My issue is with TU's criteria, which I think is too limiting. TU wants to penalize movies that, though they take place in New York, would be roughly the same if they took place somewhere else. Do The Right Thing, IMO, falls into that description.

i think this is an example of not knowing bc you either haven't spent much time there or have never been there. I don't want to spotlight but a surf movie in California can't take place on Coney Island just bc there is a beach. Maybe elements of DTRT could have happened elsewhere, but Spike captures the zeitgeist of Brooklyn during that time period. There is no way this could have taken place anywhere else. If it could have, it probably would have. And it didn't.

Great movie, BUT- Per your own criteria, this isn't such a good choice. Because the plot and theme of this film would work exactly the same in any large Northern urban area in which there is a sizeable African-American population. It would work in Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, etc. You could have the exact same story and pretty much the exact same movie.

That movie is so NYC.

That's why I would never presume to judge an LA FIlm category

And my criteria was meant to have people not just pick a movie that took place in NY or look at an internet list of "movies set in NY"

Taxi Driver is a NY movie, although they have cabs elsewhere

Criteria for Car Chase and Shocking Scene

Car Chase - in this case, "car chase" can mean almost any road vehicle - cars, trucks, motorcycles... has to have tires and an engine. Multiple vehicles are fine, but not necessary. People other than drivers being involved is good. If a helicopter joins in, that's fine too. No trains as a main piece (but if one gets involved somehow, that's ok). While we probably can't avoid CGI with the amount of picks we have, old-school will, in a general sense, fair better (this does not mean a great car chase w/ cgi will necessarily score low). But real cars, real crashes, no second take unless there's another car... I like that.

Shocking Scene - (stupid board won't let me turn off bold - sorry) - anything considered "shocking" is fine. Something we didn't see coming, something over-the-top revolting, something that made us jump out of our seats - all fair game. However, keep in mind that gnenerally, a jaw-dropping "special effect" is not really what I am looking for. Also, trust that I know / respect film history - what was shocking way back when might not seem so shocking today, but I will try to keep it in context.

3.21 - Kevin Kline in a Fish called Wanda

Up until this film he had appeared in Sophie's Choice, The Big Chill, Silverado and Cry Freedom - ALL dramatic roles.

He then comes out and totally dominates a very strong cast and wins an Oscar as the psychotic Otto.

Cleese obviously saw something when the 2 worked together on Silverado and his casting was inspired. Few could believe that the ultra serious Kline could act like this and to top it off the ####er is married to Phoebe Cates. Lucky *******.

Bullitt should get bonus points for being the first "best" car chase scene, but compare it what can be done now with car chases it comes off poorly.It definitely has a real vibe and is filmed beautifully, but if you put that car chase in a movie today, the action crowd would be bored by it.I wouldn't put it out of the top 6 though for its originality and without it we wouldn't have this category. A true trailblazing scene.
