Top 101 Movies of the 80s (1 Viewer)

#9: AMADEUS

@Ilov80s #2 movie and my #26 movie. This was one of the 3 I was told to watch for the draft, and the one I liked the most. I will let him pimp it since it was in his top 5.
Never saw this, but Tom Hulce will always be Pinto from Animal House for me.
I liked him in another 80's movie I can't mention yet; even though it's probably not going to show up, I'll hold out some hope.

I know the one you’re talking about and love that movie - yeah don’t expect it here.

#10: BLOW OUT [hbo max]

My #9, and 80s' #25. As I look at my list, I would say this is easily the fastest climber for me. I saw it for the first time within the last decade and have been a bit obsessed since. Like I hinted at, it manages to hit me in that movie nerd soft spot, and just love plot element of Travolta being a sound man for cheesy B-movies and how that ties in to the evidence and plot. Great supporting cast too, as I've always been a fan of Nancy Allen and Lithgow.

Of all the ones that the peanut gallery might not have seen and have the best shot at liking of our top movies, I would say it's Blow Out and Thief.
This peanut is intrigued with these two, along with Ran......never seen em....now on the watch list

I don't want to spotlight, but I feel like there's a really quirky comedy that is making the top 10.......it's one that's in my top 5. I feel like it's gotta be yet to come.......but what do I know?
You mean Off Beat with Judge Reinhold and Meg Tilley? Judge is a librarian dancing machine who poses as a cop to help his friend win a police dance contest?
Nope.....I don't wanna say too much other than it's not Howard the Duck, and it seems to be all over the place on 80's movie lists, or even omitted.

This thread is going too fast so I probably missed this-

I assume we should not be throwing out names?
Yes, I was kidding. I don’t think anyone would have a crappy Reinhold comedy on their actual list. Apologize if that’s a fave for someone.

I would give Amadeus a chance if you are basing your opinion from when you were a child. It’s surely not what you think it is. It’s not a stuffy period piece. Mozart is basically an overgrown frat boy obsessed with boozing, boobs and fart jokes. The general plot is his rival is out to kill him. This movie is fun and full of life. I remember being about 22 or so and had a couple stoner friends who weren’t into this kind of movie or music at all. More into rap and raunchy comedies. Not sure why but I told them we had to get stoned and watch this. Why they trusted me, I don’t know but they unanimously loved it and it became a movie we would throw on often. The costumes, the music, the cleavage, the war with God. It’s a perfect movie imo.

The real life relationship between Mozart and Salieri was much different than portrayed in Amadeus.

The anger and resentment flowed from Mozart's direction. He thought the Italians and their particular style unfairly dominated the Vienna music scene, and he thought they were interlopers who didn't appreciate or show deference to the native composers.

Mozart was vastly superior to Salieri in his writing and playing, but the one thing he couldn't do was sing. Salieri was a wonderful singer. That fact got under Mozart's skin a lot worse than the envy Salieri might have had with his composing and instrument playing.

This is either really dry humor or the greatest slow-played irony or something. I do not know what.

In case anyone is confused, Reinhold starred in Fast Times and also in some really bad other movies in the 80s, so I can't tell if 80s's tongue in so far in his cheek it's indented, or what.

Right, it’s not making an attempt to be historically accurate. It’s more of what if we set this bizarre tale of jealousy and insanity into the world of Mozart.

#11: FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH [prime]

80s' #14 and my #21. There's a couple comedies after thinking about them today I would probably have a little higher if I did the list today - this and our #8 (which I am going to watch tonight). This is the very rare example of seeing it a bit later in life and loving it more and more. So funny with so many quotes, but it also takes the time to address or observe other things in a realistic way.
Excellent movie, excellent flick.

I think a little of the plot falls apart toward the end. But I guess thats how relationships go. However, Spicoli and Mr Hand scenes were all time classics.
I don’t really see Fast Times as having a plot. It was essentially a high school year in the life of a bunch of teenagers. It didn’t need some big ending.
The plot is pretty HS specific - Dorks trying to get Laid. See Fast Times, SuperBad, Revenge of the Nerds, i could go on

It was not a veiled shot at Fast Times lol. Just a very overt shot at some of the awful Judge Reinhold movies of the 80s.

It’s not Animal House or American Pie but it’s not stuffy either. The general premise is a man in a mental ward admits to murdering Mozart. The old man was a great but forgotten composer. He was pious and devoted his whole life to God until he met the creature Mozart. Mozart was the most talented composer of all but behaved like an uncivilized buffoon. How could God give such a gross person such Godlike abilities? This set him on the path to harm God the only way he knew how by destroying Mozart.

NEEEEEEERRRRRRRDDDDZ!!!

if I'm not mistaken, this classic piece of cinema is not on the list yet, which leads me to the conclusion it did not make the cut.......I guess having bush wasn't enough...sigh

I dont recall seeing this on many internet lists. Though seems its more neo-noir

wgaf? Most are also the same boring lists with the same movies too. We were hoping for something other than the 100th version of the same thing.
My serious internet cares deeping about my singular myopic opinion.

13. BLUE VELVET [hbo max]

My #4 movie, and 80s' #44. This movie is a lot. So weird, uncomfortable, beautiful, and scary. As I read more about Lynch and read his views on movies and life, I started to appreciate what he brings more. For example, the scene of a battered Rossellini was based on something that he saw as a kid and his reaction haunted him. Hopper is freakin' bananas in this movie.

I get it. Great film, but zero desire to watch it again. Would be ranked substantially lower on my list.
That doesn't stop me while ranking things. I still haven't conjured up the courage to watch Hereditary again, but would rate it one of the best of the decade.
I dont get this.

How can a movie be truly great if you only desire to see it once?
Because it is too intense to watch multiple times. Examples of non-1980s movies that are legitimately great but hard to rewatch are Million Dollar Baby and Leaving Las Vegas
Thats my point. Its a great movie, but how great can it be if you dont want to watch it multiple times?

Im just rehashing what I imagine everyone has already figured out. Some folks values movies more on their watchability then ... looking for the right word here ... intensity, grit, emotion?

Maybe not by your criteria. But maybe so by others' criteria. It's OK for people to have different criteria from yours.
That's so un-American

#12: RAN

80s' #7, and my #29 movie. I'm still behind on my Kurosawa flicks, but I did want to get to this one before countdown. I ended up loving it more than some of the movies he might be better known for.
:penalty:

Here we go again. I wont rehash all the movies behind it.

Maybe you should be on the Oscar judging panel. That would fit.
I would love to be. It’s a an epic huge scale war movie. You don’t like war movies?
Guns of Navarone. Band of Brothers. Stripes

I may be one of the few people who got really annoyed Saving Private Ryan. The whole "you didnt kill the guy and now we have to zoom in on him killing someone". Just felt way too contrived. The Normandy scene was amazing, so well done. However, I feel like the movie fell apart trying to be smart.

Great movies evoke strong, intense emotions, whether it be humor, sadness, anxiety, whatever. Sometimes those strong emotions aren't necessarily ones you want to feel over and over. So it's possible for you to recognize that a particular movie did what it set out to do in invoking a strong emotion/feeling which usually means it's a great movie, but it doesn't mean I necessarily want to feel those emotions again.

Ive heard so many great things about this movie. The internet has it on all its lists. I have never seen it. I think I started once and couldn't get into it. Will prolly need to go onto my 5

it would be interesting to do a cross decade HS list... something like Rebel without a Cause or Blackboard Jungle... be interesting to see what similarities and differences there are over time. I mean- I love Clueless and how they use cellphones (first time I remember them being brought into a film to convey that culture). stuff like that.
Don't forget to include Slumdog Millionaire. It's a must for any HS movie list

Slumdog SO smokes Fast Times :D

(Been a while since I sat through Slumdog, and that was a repeatedly-interrupted viewing -- was Dev Patel's character even IN a high school at any point?)

One of the kids is like 14.

And they are all trying to get laid.

And the best character from Dazed and Confused is not in High School

... coming of age movie with kids in /school/ who are trying to get laid.

I woke up at like 2am and put on the TV. This is how I was introduced to Porky's. From that day forth I used to go through the TV Guide (remember those) and the movie index at the end of the guide. I would look for any movie with "nudity" and/or "sexual situations". Like a mf'n checklist.

and one even commits rape by deception - but luckily the chick digs it.
So movies dont /age/ well.

I quoted the Dazed and Confused line "Thats why I like High School girls. I get older and they stay the same age". My genZ kids explained to me I was being sexist and it was creepy talking about HS girls. Once my wife jumped on the band wagon, I knew I had lost.

But take a move like Shawshank, Green Mile, Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets ... they elicit strong emotion. For some reason I desire to see those movies again and again. However, some I think see their value from some sort of shock value (Crying Game, Sixth Sense, Schindler's List, etc). I think at some level, that 'shock' becomes less valuable. Maybe, just spitballing here, some folks believe a movie needs to stand on more than just some 'shock' value.

Huh - I don’t remember TV Guide having that index - probably missed out on some good flicks. Probably was too busy studying the all those albums on the Columbia House ads in the back.

do you like any "sad" songs?
Good question. I have 1 or 2 that remind me of close people who have passed. I dont enjoy reliving those songs on a frequent basis as the emotion they elicit. However, they are still good songs. As far as general sad songs, not that much of a fan in general. Who wants to be sad?

So yea, I see your point. However, those feelings are super inherit to me. I would wager my emotional attachment shouldnt dictate how good a movie is. I would like to think I could seperate my love for a movie compared to how good the movie really is.

Good points though.

and one even commits rape by deception - but luckily the chick digs it.

Luckily my wife is not woke cuz if she were, she might have issues with me...

Cannot think of a situation where using that quote with the wife and kids was a good idea.

Describing why it was effective within the context of the movie?

But other than that, no. I can't think of a good reason why one would say that around most people--other than really close friends who are male.

See Fast Times, SuperBad, Revenge of the Nerds, i could go on
NEEEEEEERRRRRRRDDDDZ!!!

if I'm not mistaken, this classic piece of cinema is not on the list yet, which leads me to the conclusion it did not make the cut.......I guess having bush wasn't enough...sigh
We’ve got BUSH!!!!!

I know what this party needs......it needs Super Joint.
I saw this movie at my buddies house.....his parents worked shift work, and we fired it up on HBO when they weren't around......classic 80's debauchery.....and the Nerds, do indeed get revenge!
I woke up at like 2am and put on the TV. This is how I was introduced to Porky's. From that day forth I used to go through the TV Guide (remember those) and the movie index at the end of the guide. I would look for any movie with "nudity" and/or "sexual situations". Like a mf'n checklist.
Huh - I don’t remember TV Guide having that index - probably missed out on some good flicks. Probably was too busy studying the all those albums on the Columbia House ads in the back.
Best description I could find: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_Guide_(magazine)

The "Movie Guide," which encompassed the final pages of each edition, provided summaries of films scheduled to air over the next one to two weeks on the cable channels included in both the log and grid listings (excluding those featured exclusively in the grids) as well as a first-page summary of the films scheduled to premiere that week (arranged by channel and sub-categorized by title). As the years went on, more cable channels were added into the listings of each edition. To help offset this, the May 11–17, 1985, issue introduced a smaller Helvetica font for the log, along with some other cosmetic changes; in particular, a show's length began to be listed after the show's title instead of at the end of its synopsis. That issue also saw advertising for local stations featured in the corresponding edition be restricted to certain special events, with most program promotions being restricted to those for national broadcast and cable networks.

You would get along with my wife.

it would be interesting to do a cross decade HS list... something like Rebel without a Cause or Blackboard Jungle... be interesting to see what similarities and differences there are over time.

Exactly. This comment is to pay homage to a previously set of rankings of this genre of move.

Great movie lines that can no longer be said?

"We've got bush"
"You better pray good boy"
"Daniel-son!"
should I go on?
