Top 101 Movies of the 80s (3 Viewers)

59/60:

ORDINARY PEOPLE [prime, paramount+]
THE ABYSS

Our #32 picks. Cameron getting his underwater boner on starting in the 80s. I was surprised how much I loved this one on a rewatch and love the idea of underwater ETs. Ending was cheesy, but that goes for a lot of movies so I don't knock it too much. I had forgotten about Ordinary People. Great movie that I would have had in the 70s-100 range.
The Abyss?

In all seriousness, I never understood the love for this movie? Was it the plot? Was it the acting? Was it the cinematography? Was it the rat-in-fluid?

I've never understood the draw to this movie. I doubt it would make my top 100 and it is now currently ranked ahead of ROTLA

I loved this movie, but haven't seen it in a while so don't know how well it's aged. I do remember that it was the poster movie for home surround sound systems when they first started coming out. Every electronics store had the opening submarine scene playing as the in-store demo and it was ****ing impressive.

I think what I like about it is that it has a satisfying and conclusive ending after it's big buildup. Maybe a bit heavy handed with it's theme, but still satisfying. A lot of movies like this tend to keep things ambiguous, and this one didn't, especially if you watched the extended edition.
However, I have never liked the "crazy teammate" trope.

maybe in "Fear Strikes Out" ... but that's about it.

:coffee:
Not even 2001: Space Odyssey

Never heard of it. Id put a :bag: over my head, but I bet if I started a poll on this forum for number of people who have watched, heard of, never heard of the poll results would be 10, 20, 70 percent.
Obviously I don’t know your tastes beyond The Goonies and a couple others but if you like con movies then House of Games would be a good one to add to your 5. Would be a fun spin-off thread to see you watch some of these and either enjoy them or mock us some more.
Since yall keep putting up with me, once the list is done I will * all that I havnt seen. Happy to watch and report back. Im sure there will be zero hilarity ensued.
KP and I knew going in that this would become a bit of **** show. We both knew based on our tastes that it wouldn’t be chalk rankings. So I embrace the discourse. I do think that thread would be a lot of fun.

What I like about the Abyss was there really is no other movie like it. Solid script, solid cinematography, solid special effects(for the time), great acting for the genre, great ending and original story.

I recall Deepstar Six coming out around the same time but that movie is trash and not in the same stratosphere. Abyss is a good movie.

HOUSE OF GAMES [tubi]
THE KARATE KID [amc+ ]

Our #28 selections. Karate Kid is a core movie for me, love every minute of it. Great little father/son dynamic at the core, prime Elizabeth Shue, and quotes for years. "Get 'im a body bag ... yeah!!" House of Games is another I haven't seen - and this will be a running theme in the next 20 or so picks. @Ilov80s is giving me quite the list of 80s movies to watch for homework that will be new to me.
I rewatched KK with my kids. I don't think it ages as well as the other classics in the 80's. However, Cobra Kai creates much more nostalgia for the canon.

I would like to sincerely ask for how many people had House of Games in their top 100.
You don’t like House of Games?
Never heard of it. Id put a :bag: over my head, but I bet if I started a poll on this forum for number of people who have watched, heard of, never heard of the poll results would be 10, 20, 70 percent.

I feel like everybody primarily wants classic "80s movies" that defined their youths... but there were a ton of amazing "movies" in the 80s that stand on their own, nostaligia or no. this is one of them. and I"m sure a lot of them will be left off this list.
Or is it possible those movies really aren't that good and that is why the masses didn't enjoy them?

Agree on Deep Star Six. I got to say though, I cant think of any underwater movie that did well except maybe Hunt for Red October (90's) and Operation Petticoat (50's)

Abyss plot as I remember: Go down in submarine thing. Show cool technology liquid breathing. Teammate goes mad. Hero goes to die. Hero finds new life. New life saves hero

lol at good.

check any "best movies of the 1980s" list on google. they've got the blockbuster nostalgic standards and lots more... including most of these (and again- these guys keep saying its a list of their favorite movies of the 1980s, not some objective draft to get upvotes). lmao at judging movies as you are without knowing anything about them... good look for you!

Crimson Tide and a host of other submarine movies that were well received. Michael Crichton's "Sphere" should have been better.

ETA, Abyss was an underwater oil rig not a submarine.

No one's doubting that there were amazing movies from the 80s other than the ones we remember from our youth. But these movies didn't just define our youth, they defined the decade. When you think of movies that defined the 80s, I'm sorry but it's not House of Games or Ordinary People. It's the blockbusters, and we've seen many ranked behind the movies like the former.

Yup

If you think Im going to watch After Hours, Polyester, House of Card Games, etc, etc and like them better than The Goonies and ROTLA, that's your business. But I will watch them and give honest feedback.

Looks like HBO is the place for good 80s movies.
#63: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK [parmount+ ]

@Ilov80s ' #34 pick. I will just duck and let him talk about it.

Wow, sorry, catching up but this is awful. This either means you left off Temple of Doom and Last Crusade or you ranked them higher, both of which are just not right, but all three are top films of the 80s. In what universe is RoTLA not a top ten 80s movie?

Also, people are saying that for some of us we're getting caught up in nostalgia as if it's a negative thing. I completely disagree. For movies, the way they can take you back to a previous time, especially childhood is such a strong and great feeling Couple this with the fact that the 80s were pretty much the golden age of action/adventure blockbuster movies, pushing down theseclassics in favor of the artsy fartsy just makes no sense for this decade. It's not like we're getting caught up in nostalgia for terrible movies here. Nobody remembers the 80s for Amadeus or Chariots of Fire or Driving Miss Daisy. They remember the 80s for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Back to the Future.
It's not. BUT sometimes nostalgia can cloud or over shadow quality. Also, depending on ages people have different sweet spots for nostalgia, or in the matter of Raiders and not watching it until my 30s, I have 0 nostalgia for it, and I didn't think it held up well. Still a fun movie, but it would be in my personal 100-200.

For me having 0 consideration for stuff that might be "artsy-fartsy" also is pretty ignorant. Just because my 10 year old brain didn't love them doesn't mean they aren't stellar movies that people should watch, or movies I have fallen for later in life. I think the more interesting discussion will come when we see the 29-30 we agreed on and are at the top. The top 30 is not lacking in cheese, explosions, laughs, or violence. Yes, there about about 6-7 in there that are "artsy-fartsy" and some huge titles we will get to before that too. Again, this was our list of favorite movies from the 80s, not favorite "80s movies" we both felt it was an important distinction based on our lists.

There's definitely room for artsy fartsy in a top 100 80s movies but they should mostly be on the back end. The top 50 should be filled with the following:

- Star Wars
- Indiana Jones
- Back to the Future
- campy 80s horror like NOES, Friday 13th, etc. (select films, not all of them)
- almost all the john hughes catalog
- other classic comedies like Caddyshack, Vacation, Ghostbusters, etc.
- other Blockbusters like Top Gun, Rambo, Aliens

I'm sure your top 50 will have a lot of these, but ROTLA was a swing and a miss. I know this is all subjective, but that was as close to being an objectively wrong pick as it gets.

Serious question for you and others - how much are you going back and watching all these movies you are listing? Yes, some of these things you listed will show up, but adult KP has found many of them to be overrated on rewatches and slid down the list as others rose. We can have specific discussions as more and more are revealed.
Good questions, my best responses are based on the fact that I only really watch older movies in 2 ways now (Im 48).
  1. Looking for a movie for family night. This includes wife, 3 boys (19, 17, 14), and myself
  2. At someone else's house and trying to see "whats on right now"
If Im looking for something for the family, classic 80's is perfect as they are for everyone. I understand people use the word "nostalgia", but it's more than that. These movies are "recognizable" by everyone either through their franchise, name recognition, or even meme's.

Also, when scrolling through "what's on now", any of my fav movies I can pick up at a random place in the movie and get into it quick. I would say my top 30 movies from the 80's i've seen dozens of times, simply because they are great and easy to watch. No trying to pick, but can someone just pick a random spot in After Hours or The Outsiders and watch for 30 minutes and enjoy? I know I couldnt start watching Sex Lies and Videotape at random spots and enjoy it. NO CHANCE on The Abyss.
Your post perfectly explains why you will have issues with many of my picks. I agree in your 2 scenarios many if my movies are a terrible fit. No, I'm not watching Sex, Lies and Videotape in those situations, I'm not a psychopath. I would say that 80% of my movie watching is not how you describe. It's mostly me or at the most my wife watching.

How you described you watching is a great way to consume movies, but not the only way. Many times I want to be pushed, made to cry, think about the world or relationships in a different way, whatever. That's also what great movies do, at least imo. And some movies are made so turn off the phone, stfu, and watch it from start to end.

Speaking of crying, the one and only film to get me to cry every damn time I watch it has yet to be mentioned. I'm assuming it will be....

No one's doubting that there were amazing movies from the 80s other than the ones we remember from our youth. But these movies didn't just define our youth, they defined the decade. When you think of movies that defined the 80s, I'm sorry but it's not House of Games or Ordinary People. It's the blockbusters, and we've seen many ranked behind the movies like the former.
never what these guys said they were doing.

make your own list of obvious movies from the 80s

I understand that, but why are they making a thread if they don't want to hear what people think of the list? I don't understand your point. Are we not allowed to comment on how we disagree with their list? I dont think people want threads of everyone's individual rankings.

they put these up for discussion. I guess all the whining can count as discussion... but its based on criteria neither of them ever said were the basis for this list. it just seems pointless to whine about this stuff, when instead- there could be discussions about the movies themselves instead of this other stuff that they never said they were doing.

for some reason I'm reminded of Tim's 1981 song list- and counting Don't They Know It's Christmas as new wave.

So you don't think starting a thread with the title "Top 101 Movies of the 80s", and then putting ROTLA somewhere at the end is not going to generate a particular type of discussion?

We ARE discussing the movies. I gave a pretty good justification about why Ghostbusters should be way higher with solid points specific to the movie. Others did the same with ROTLA.

There was also Leviathan and I thought one other as well.

I think the difference between the Abyss and the other similar movies mentioned is James Cameron. He's just a great storyteller and The Abyss was no different. It's why it stands out in the "stuff happens underwater and it might be aliens" genre.

fair enough... lol- that thread title definitely gums up the works. and appreciate your commentary on ghostbusters. wish there was more of that, less of omg how can this other movie I've never seen be considered.

I think KP is spot on with nostalgia clouding judgement

Im gonna list like 25 movies after this that I love and probably 90% of them are crap, but I grew up watching them and watched them dozens of times

I’ve also gone back and rewatched some of these classics with my kids and some of them hold up and some not so much

Also from another perspective, I didn’t see Animal House until I was in my late 20s or early 30s (so let’s just say like 2010). Always showed up on funniest movies lists and my reaction was… “meh”. but I bet you pole a bunch of boomers and it’s a top 5 all time comedy for them

That's been my feeling 100% with the comedies from that era. I was too young for those in the 80s, and by the time I watched them in my 30s I was meh at best with them. But I can understand people jut 4-5 years older than me watching and quoting those to death and loving them.

The thing is we're talking about nostalgia for movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Goonies, and Ghostbusters. There's no metric where those movies can be considered crap and only holding up because of nostalgia. They are legit great movies, classics.

On the other hand, a good example for me of nostalgia holding up a bad movie is Gremlins. It's probably in my top 30 because of nostalgia, but I agree it's a pretty average movie otherwise.

49/50:

SOMETHING WILD [prime]
Exhibit B that Jeff Daniels is underrated.
#48: BULL DURHAM [hbo max]

My #22 pick. I think I took this in a draft as best sports movie. I don't like a ton of sports movies, or Keven Costner movies for that matter, so this it's a rare one that I love like this movie. My wife and I watched it last night and had a blast.
Still arguably my favorite baseball movie to this day. Used to love quoting the "Nuke's uptight because his eyelids are jammed" speech whenever there was a conference at the mound during my son's games, as well as other lines at other appropriate times. At least once in travel ball, I yelled Get a hit, Crash! at my son; he told me to shut up.

I think we have embraced the snark, threats, etc. I am not one bit bothered, I know what I like.

A) They are not crap, getting ranked at 60 for best of the tens of thousands of movies from a decade isn't saying it's bad. We are saying the movie is extremely good.
B) It's all subjective and for fun

I never claimed any of those movies are crap or that they only hold up for nostalgia. It's just odd that people can't understand a person watching Raiders as an adult for the first time not connecting with it like you all did, or in the case of 80s ironically not growing up with any of these movies and coming at them from that perspective as well.

#34 is much more reasonable than #90 for Lost Boys. Great movie. My wife never wants to go to Santa Cruz anymore because of it.
That is why this is fun. Even KP and I weren't super close on Lost Boys.I kept it up as a nostalgia pick- love the soundtrack especially but like most Joel Shumacher movies, it's questionable at best. I still can't kick my love for it though.

SOMETHING WILD [prime]

THERE IT IS!!!

one of the 5 i mentioned previous ... and the one i cited as following in "After Hours" wake - TOP 5 FOR ME.

btw, Ray Sinclair makes Henry Hill look like a lil' bisch ... you don't know Ray Liotta 'til ya know Ray Sinclair.
I just saw this for the first time last summer after Liotta passed. That movie fn rules. It's a great movie and then Liotta shows up, completely flips the script and just catapults it to the stratosphere. What a pyscho.

Not you or 80s. A few people have come here and suggested that the only thing propping up the movies we are arguing for is nostalgia.

I think nostalgia helps impacts everything, It's inescapable. Doesn't mean the thing was bad, but it's very hard to separate a song, movie, event from our personal context with it. Nostalgia is certainly impacting my ratings here. Would I have ranked Witness where I did if it wasn't for memories of watching it with my mom? I can't say. I think it's a great movie but I also can't watch it without being reminded of times I've seen it before.

I agree. Lost Boys is more about the setting/ambiance and the soundtrack (plus a never hotter Jami Gertz) than the plot line, but a very enjoyable watch.
