Top 101 Movies of the 80s (2 Viewers)

Let's kick Friday off right. Be honest, when you think of favorite movies of the 80s, you also think of Academy Award winning, hours long Swedish semi-autobiographical dramas. Don't wuss out and watch the 3 hour cut either.

#29: FANNY AND ALEXANDER

80s' #78, and my #23. Here's where I probably take triple crap because this is a movie I just watched in the last month for the first time. Along with the 3 "homework" movies that I was tasked with watching before doing this 80s countdown ;), before doing my list I wanted to get through my Bergman autobiography I was reading and get to this one because I knew it was semi-autobiographical. This was the clue I was hinting at that is my new obsession - I watched a handful of Bergman last fall and got hooked, and ending up really digging them all and wanting to dive in more. Since then I got the book (I usually have a movie related book I'm reading), listened to a few pods, bought the Criterion 39 disc set, and dove in head first.

Obviously I dug this movie as well and instantly loved it (yes, I watched the 312 minute cut), but I will also fully admit this was the movie that most got the "desert island" bump, because it would be one of the first I'd want to tackle again and keep digging into. There are other movies that got a similar treatment on my countdowns, being ones I just saw for the for first time as reasearch for this and ended up loving and would want to take to an island with me.

I work a different shift than usual today, so I will probably do 3-4 this morning, a couple on break (if I remember the list), and then the rest tonight.

Next will be two of the movies I described as "comedies", as they are also two of the movies I thought were surprises for the top 30 and probably not what most would think of if I said 80s comedy. The humor is a little dark, but we still have teens and epic directors, and quotes galore. I would say that both got remakes in a way. One a toned down version that is still funny, probably more famous, but not as dark. The other switched genres because evidently that is the only one that makes money in the theaters anymore?

I’ve only seen the 3 hour cut. :bag:
The funny thing is, after buying the disc I watched Fanny and Alexander on the Criterion channel, because they chopped it up into 4 mini-series chunks. I assumed it was how it was conceived for a tv miniseries and it was easy to break up and digest over a few nights.
Yeah I believe it was a miniseries in Sweden and recut as a movie for international audiences. I think.

#28: HEATHERS [prime, amc+, tubi]

80s' #27 and my #71. Not sure if you had in mind some pitch black comedy teen movies, but here we are. It's one that has been climbing the list over the years. Others like Mean Girls have tried to do similar, but you can't mimic this era and these jokes anymore. One I need to watch again soon, and another I'd expect to show up higher if we would do a similar list in 5 years.

I doubt we're going to see the Polish miniseries turned into movies here... right? not a joke- and I hope you know what I'm talking about... also amazing.

This isn’t a criticism of the ranking. since I haven’t seen the movie - but I’ve never even heard of this movie.

I still haven't fully tackled this one, but it's on the agenda.

some are better than others, but all amazing. I got to see 3 or 4 at a film festival... just blown away. but I was already a big fan of the director.

I've seen and loved all the 90s output, but I haven't gotten to the 80s much. I think I've seen 1-2 of these, but that's it. It's on the wish list for when I go crazy during a Criterion 50% sale though.

It's interesting that while I don't click with comedies much, and don't click with this director as much as many around here, two of his comedies have shown up on my list....

Big fan of this one. IIRC they took forever to release this on DVD, finally had a pretty cool collector’s edition

I’d quote a few things but pretty sure I’d get banned

#27: THE KING OF COMEDY

Our #48 and #49 picks. The Scorsese 80s comedies have really grown on me over last decade. One of my favorite Bob performances and plenty of uncomfortable comedy that hits my sweet spot. Sandra Bernhard was a very pleasant surprise for me as well in this one.

Yeah, it's a tough one to quote in most settings.

... can you at least tell me what's on today's lunch menu?

I will end the morning with one that will please the masses more. This is the movie with the huge discrepancy in rating - my #11 and 80s' #84. It's the one that pissed off more people in the dorms than any other, maybe our most watched and quoted movie in college, and one of the gayest movies ever made. ;)

whoa!

I LOVE this movie. use Rupert Pupkin as screen name a ton. yeah... the comedy is uncomfortable/andy kaufman-esque at times. the real shock and star of this (despite great performances by Bob and still wanting to punch Sandra B, but because she wants me to and not because I'm just annoyed)... Jerry Lewis. to think HE was the one to bring gravitas and genuine emotion to the zaniness.. brilliant casting by Scorcese.

Great movie - much better than it’s remake, The Joker.
1000%, and what my clue was going for.

When I watched the Joker, all I could think of was how it’s basically just a darker re-write of the King of Comedy - maybe they were in on the “joke” by also casting Deniro, but this time in the Jerry Lewis role.

After we get to the top pick, each of us can post or reveal our full lists (or at least the movies that didn't make it on the countdown). Each of us has 30+ movies that didn't get talked about, and many movies you had in mind that might have missed a shout out could be in that group.

If we are going to do a next 100, I'd ask that people don't talk about what was left off.

I've got a list of 18 potential snubs going with 34 or so picks remaining. This does not include some obvious classics that have not yet been mentioned. Curious to see how much this list gets whittled down.

I volunteer to do a "next 100" with you when this is over.
I’d be down just be warned the more I look into this the more I’m really not into much 80s artsy fartsies or even just dramas. I mean some of them are good but not what I think of when I think of best 80s movies.

I’ve been looking at how many 80s movies I would rank before I got to the first drama and so far I’m at 64 movies.

Would be a good balance, but I'd also approach this primarily as "best 80's movies" rather than "best movies of the 80's".

yeah- wasn't subtle. and the deniro casting definitely told me they were letting the audience know it.

I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH SHEEDY DOLLING UP BECAUSE WHO CARES ABOUT PHILOSOPHICAL CONSISTENCY IN THE MOVIE ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL SUSPENSIONS?

It's all about screwing the immediate man, not the aesthetic goals of aspiring seniors.

Besides, it was an issue with hygiene, too. Didn't you see the flakes on the paper? That needs to be addressed at some point, don't you think?

Addressing hygiene <> completely changing appearance

I will refrain from posting what made my top 100 but missed this joint countdown.

I might want to put together a list of movies left out that I loved.... or maybe just my top 20 movies from the 80s. I don't care about "80s" movies tbh... just best/favorite movies released that decade.

eta: is that going to break SHuke's request?

As in you don't want us to talk about our remaining 25-30 on our individual countdowns and just hype them if/when you select them?

I’ll save my comments for when the movies do or don’t get mentioned in their countdown

We can do that for sure if they were going to put one together.

#26: TOP GUN [prime, paramount+]

My #11 and 80s' #84. I will admit, this took more of a ding because the sequel is better, but it's a movie that I always have on tap in my collection and was one of the first 4ks I got, so I had to have it near the top. My dumb friends and I in the dorms put all 4 beds in one room, then had the other across the hall as our movie/music/lounge room. We rigged up no less than 12 speakers in a small dorm room and played this movie way too much. @Ilov80s - you can be my movie wingman anytime.

I plan to do 2 on my break this afternoon - we will get to more High School shenanigans and the movie my mom had to walk out of. Then the last 3 of the day will come tonight.

Did you guys get any volleyball games going?

Correct. Putting the effort into another countdown wouldn't be worth it if all of the movies are already discussed in this thread.

But I don't really care either way. If you guys want, I can just throw my misses into this thread following the countdown.

Very fair I think 10-15 would be slam dunk for the next wave, especially if we are mainly talking "80s movies"
