Top 101 Movies of the 80s (5 Viewers)

@Ilov80s yeah, I was wrong. The director who's debut I was talking didn't even have 4 movies in the 90s for us to rank. He did direct one of your favorite "new to me" movies that you watch for the countdown though.

Great movie that of course the Academy got wrong by giving the acclaim to the wrong actor.

I still think chillwave band Com Truise has one of the best band names ever for its fitting style of music, but I'm not sure what that has to do with the countdown other than HE WAS IN TOP GUN AND RAIN MAN BOTH AND MAGNOLIA AND GETS NO CREDIT FOR ANY OF THOSE PERFORMANCES.

#21: THIEF [tubi]

80s' #22 and my #61. Great neo-noir for Micheal Mann's debut starring the late Jimmy Caan. This was another for me that I saw for the first time recently and loved it enough to add it to the list. This for sure was the last "surprise" pick of the day as I expect several to say they haven't seen or heard of it. If that's the case, this is probably the one of all of our "surprises" that I would suggest to watch.

So we for sure want none on the weekend, or just less?

Options:

1. Keep doing 10/day and end Sunday
2. Skip the weekend, do 10/day ending Tuesday.
3. Both 5/day over the weekend and end on Monday.

Out for patio drinks tonight. I will respond to every and any comment later.
What kind of drinks?
Modelos and a cuervo shot. Home now having a fruit sour beer.
#22: RAIN MAN [tubi]

80s' #46, my #38. Great movie that of course the Academy got wrong by giving the acclaim to the wrong actor.
Agree, Cruise was better than Hoffman. Also this is a movie people like to criticize by saying "people with autism aren't usually savants and this movie blah blah blah". I am a special ed. teacher. Of course most people on the spectrum can't look at a spilled pile of toothpicks and count them instantly. I still think this movie was important for putting autism on the radar as well as just being an entertaining, thought provoking and heart warming movie.

Well, I didn't see Caan looking for pirate booty or dusty religious artifacts, so this crowd might not care. ;)

the first one I haven't seen that I'm interested in seeing....thanks.

The 11 are a pretty interesting mix. We have:

More High School b.s? 2 more coming up.
The best sequel ever?
2 directors each with 2 movies
Another director snagging his 3rd movie on the countdown
A director's parent saying one of the most iconic quotes of the 80s
A movie I know will be ok with @Scoresman
of course - one long, foreign, artsy crap to annoy the masses
My #4 and #5 movies of the decade, and a top 10 from 80s.
A movie where most of my life I preferred the sequel but grew up and realized I was wrong.
My #4 is a very uncomfortable watch.

One of the 20 coolest movies ever made

#23: THE PRINCESS BRIDE [disney+ ]

80s' #29, and my #57. Yes, I still think think the movie is overrated, over watched, and over quoted, but I still love it and would want it in my collection. My video store experiences is a reason that it is even in the 50s though instead of higher.
I tried to watch this in college several times and fell asleep every time due to drunkenness. A few years later I tried to watch it with my first wife and fell asleep again! Finally made it all the way through when watching it with my current wife. I guess it’s a metaphor for my life or something.

It’s quotable but I don’t find it to be the sensation that a lot of people do.

It's a movie I compare a lot to Raiders. Both aping old adventure movies/stories. Princess Bride is just a lot funnier than Raiders.

I saw Thief when it came out.. and mostly only remember the Vangelis soundtrack. I think it was just me and my dad, and I vaguely remember seeing it only because it had the right showtime. I was too young... Need to rewatch

You ARE the goon squad.

Nobody answered. I am going with #3 as a compromise. I will just slowly post the 5 moives throughout the day starting with one soon. Mostly, it's to kill my boredom throughout the day. ;)

The one coming up is a surprisingly (to me) contenious "80s movie" and is EASILY, the most quoted movie by people to me.

The three times I wasn’t allergic to Tom Cruise were this, Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia.
All The Right Moves is an all-time underrated sports movie, even when you suspend disbelief that a 5'7" pasty Cruise was a lockdown CB good enough to earn a D-1 scholarship.
I did see that one a long time ago. I liked it. But it was pre-Risky Business so he wasn’t TOM CRUISE yet.

Easy mistake to make considering Vangelis was the king of soundtracks, but that one was done by Tangerine Dream.
thanks for the correction!

I was a keyboard kid... so both were firmly in my radar, and I'm sure I knew the differnce back then before my brain turned to middle aged lack of memory mush.

thought you guys were talking about Inside Moves- small basketball movie from early 80s. I remember liking that one a lot, tbh.

I don’t love this one but it does have some great quotes. This was another one I didn’t see until much later in life and wasn’t overly impressed with but it’s grown on me a bit
Honestly was begging to think it would get left off and you’d have a mutiny on your hands

I quote this one a lot too but mostly just the “uh oh fart” part when I fart on the car

Hell yeah Beastmaster gonna crack the Top 10!

#20: FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF [paramount+, showtime]

My #30 pick and 80s' #52. My last name rhymes with Bueller, so yeah... all the time with the "Bueller, Bueller..... " and other quotes at me. I recently rewatched it and still had a blast with it. Yes - Ferris is a turd, and it becomes more apparent as I you get older. I don't have to like him or cheer for him to love the movie - the peripheral stuff is also a blast. One of the dumb things that still cracks me up is the Star Wars theme with the lot attendants flying over a bump. A recent pod I listened to pimped the idea of a movie from their POV and showed their adventures with the car. Loved that idea.
