@usmntonly

20-year-old Real Salt Lake and playmaker Diego Luna, who was left off the U.S. Olympic roster, is leaving the door open to a potential switch to play for Mexico at the international level.

"I've never closed down any doors. For me, it's continuing to perform and who's going to give me the best opportunity.I know there's some changes going on at the Mexican Football Federation, U.S. Soccer, too, but there are some big changes going on so we'll see what happens there."

If I'm him, I'm WAY gone. Its very clear the federation doesn't value him. He absolutely deserved the Olympic opportunity.

I assume they only do one per country - I would have gone Jedi instead of CP.
I'm assuming this is the 23/24 season? Jedi was great and deserved recognition, but CP had 30+ G/A between the US team and Milan this year. Hard to say he wasn't the best player in the US and he should win this going away given the down years for Davies and David.

USMNT transfer news from @tombogert

Several clubs have lined up for Bryan Reynolds with a German club & an English club pushing the hardest. Reynolds is likely to leave Westerlo this summer.

A Qatari club is pursuing Duncan McGuire. Clubs in Europe also remain interested in him. Orlando City insist McGuire is not for sale and want to build around him, but contract talks remain far apart between both parties.

Can I please get a layman's primer on the Olympic soccer team(s)? This is the U23 team correct? This is a different coach and team than the national team that lost in the Copa? Will there be any overlap? Are these kids up and comers? Sorry I'm dumb. TIA

It is U23 with the stipulation of you can roster up to three over age players.

It is a completely different team and coaching staff from the senior national team.

Normally there would be a little overlap in the rosters but since the senior national team is still a little on the young side, many players who could have played in the Olympics will not because of their involvement in Copa America. Senior national team players like Pepi, Scally, Tillman, Musah, Reyna, Balogun, Dest and some others could have played in the Olympics but will not be.

There is only one player who will be on both the Copa and Olympic rosters and that is Miles Robinson, who is using one of the three overage spots.

Players to keep an eye on include Busio and Tessman, who play together on the same team in Italy. Also big Duncan, the lumbering striker, is an interesting player to watch to see if he is out of his depth or not. Paredes is a talented young winger that plays in Germany that we need to pop if the team is to hope to get out of the group. I am unsure who the US will be starting in goal but both are young keepers that have promise.
Thank you kindly, sir. My 11yo is asking about how this all works and I'm the casualest of casual fans.

Note that the women's tournament is different. It is the full national teams for the women, so the Olympics become like a mini world cup. However, as women's soccer continues to rise in popularity, I do wonder if FIFA will turn this into a U23 eventually for the women as well to protect the World Cup.

Konrad to the Swiss first division

========================

FC Lausanne-Sport is pleased to announce the signing of Konrad de la Fuente from Olympique de Marseille. The American wingman signed for three seasons with the Lausanne club.

So is this just a matter of wanting to keep a good relationship with the player's clubs and not call them again? Seems like with 3 senior players we could fill the majority of our senior starting lineup in the olympics. Given that we are short on competition to play against this cycle it seems like that would have been helpful (not to mention giving us a really good chance of winning in the olympics, which has to mean something, right?).

The issue is more one of overuse.

You can’t realistically give the players no time off. A full season into Copa into Olympics into preseason into another season is just begging for injuries and burn out.

Some interesting information from ESPN about the new coach

=================

"Money is not an issue," one high-level federation source said to ESPN via text message. "USSF can make it happen. Just have sponsors fill any shortfall. It's like colleges pay a base salary and then have outside sources do the rest. Not complicated."

Multiple sources told ESPN that the USSF had run "scenarios of anticipated revenue" if they kept Berhalter on board or signed a big-name coach that might increase enthusiasm around the team and, by extension, attendance and revenue. While sources declined to share the exact numbers with ESPN, the results of the simulations point to hiring a higher-profile manager being worth the USSF's while.

Wow. I had completely written him off.

Really nice skills, but clearly limited in scope. Hope he can grow a bit of defensive work in Switzerland

I'm too lazy to look up my USWNT thread...

Welcome to the US, Emma Hayes.
Interview in ESPN saying how disrespectful it is to other countries to have the US media and fan narrative still be about who the US will play in the semis or Final before the competition has started.

Its interesting the women's national team coaches all cover the Olympics whereas for the men we view that as a totally separate job.

I think it makes complete sense.

The women's Olympics is a full national team. The mens Olympics is age restricted.

Didn't we kind of take Copa off?

This affects the US as they are in group A. I guess better safe than sorry

Miami, FL – Today, Concacaf has announced changes to the match schedule and venues of the 2024 Concacaf Men’s U-20 Championship.

The region’s Men’s U-20 World Cup qualifying tournament kicked off on July 19 in Irapuato and Celaya, Mexico, and includes the participation of 12 Member Associations.

Following a security incident outside of a team hotel in Celaya, and in an abundance of caution and to ensure the best possible experience for all participants, Concacaf, in coordination with the FMF, has decided to move the remainder of the tournament to the cities of Irapuato (Estadio Sergio Leon Chavez) and Leon (Estadio Leon). No further matches will be played in Celaya.

Additionally, Concacaf has rescheduled the Group A matches originally scheduled for Thursday, July 25, to Friday, July 26. This will allow these four teams to relocate from Celaya to Leon.

These decisions were made in coordination with the Mexican Football Federation and the local authorities.

Oh my. A police officer was murdered right outside the teams hotel.

Also heard the other day that there is a FIFA requirement of 3 weeks off after your involvement in the Euros/Copa ends. I can not seem to find anything to confirm though.

interesting....I wonder if the US made a much longer run in the Copa if this would have affected Miles?

I think he is one of the very few players who was on a Copa/Euro roster and is playing in the Olympics...

Looks like Southgate is the leading candidate......
CBSSports had and article about this. Their summary was basically "In some ways, he is very similar to Berhalter, but as long as that's first term Berhalter, then it's not a bad thing at all."

WHAT? Yes it is. Why would we want another GGG? Because he's English that makes him better than? NO. NO NO NO.

Canada is doing its best to replace Mexico as the team to hate

Canada's men's and women's soccer teams have relied on drones and spying for years, sources say. Coaching staff and contractors working with Canada’s men’s and women’s national soccer teams have been engaged for years in efforts to film the closed-door training sessions of their opponents, including during the women’s gold-medal winning Olympic tournament in 2021, sources told TSN

Unless those drones are dropping piss into the stands and playing recordings of racial slurs, they've got a long ways to go.

all joking aside here, Canada may be ****ed with a capital F.

It would not shock me if FIFA went as far to remove them as co hosts of the WC (seeing as how they would be the easiest to remove with little issues and toss them back into qualifying)

So as we know the US U20 key game was pushed until tomorrow.

I noticed something very interesting in the standings.

Mexico and Panama are 100% deadlocked in their group. Same points, same GD, same goals for, same goals against, and same amount of disciplinary points.

They play each other in the last game. If they draw, it will come down to either disciplinary points or a coin flip to see who wins group

=========================

I mention the above because it might have ramifications on the US

The US needs a draw tomorrow night against Costa Rica to finish first in the group and likely get a fairly easy quarter final game against a 3rd place team.

Should the US lose the game tomorrow, they will play the winner of the Panama-Mexico dual.

We clearly don't want to lose this game tomorrow. Playing a 3rd place team would likely mean an 85% or greater of qualifying for the WC. Should they instead lose and get Mexico (in Mexico) for the quarterfinal game, their odds of qualifying would drop dramatically.

holy crap, the Canada story gets worse every time I go on twitter.

Canada originally claimed the guy doing the spying was an "unaccredited analyst with Canada Soccer". It turns out it was a Senior Canada Soccer Federation official.

Women's coach has now been suspended and removed as head coach.

This is going to unravel badly.

So more trouble for the El Tri ladies?

Ugh. The US yiuth teams have routinely **** the bed when they've needed a big result the last... too many years. This will be an interesting test of where the program is psychologically- can they get the result when it's needed?

Looks like Marsch could get caught up in drone-gate up in Canada:

wow..........

FIFA rarely raises it head out of the sand to do anything but I still have this feeling they may actually do something this time.

One thing I had forgot was how bad of shape Canadian soccer finances were. This scandal is hardly going to get them more sponsors.

The second paragraph...........

===================

@itsmeglinehan

Kevin Blue, CEO of Canada Soccer, addressing media now — "The players themselves have not been involved in any unethical behavior." Also says it would be unfair to the players if a deduction of points were to happen at the considering their proactive steps.

"I received new internal information from internal sources that gave me reason to think further about the potential that this type of behavior was systemic." "...concrete information I received yesterday made me consider the possibility that this matter is much more extensive."
