Weird Food Combinations You Like (2 Viewers)

Someone mentioned Fritos earlier. On coney dogs (chili-mustard-onions) throw some Fritos on top.
That's just a Frito pie with hot dog in it. Nothing odd at all.
Not many folks outside of the great state of Texas know about this, honestly. It took me moving to Austin to discover this joy.
My high school cafeteria sold Frito pies in the bag with the bag cut open and the chili and stuff on top. (With a huge napkin cushion because that stuff is HOT.) When Mr R (a llocal) got it that way a few years back, he was weirrded out. He'd only seen it served in a styrofoam box. Seemed normal to me.
I never knew Frito Pie wasn't served in the bag. A high school cafeteria and concession stand staple.

Cold rice, milk, and sugar.
How I learned to eat rice as a kid.
I love this for leftover rice and still eat it.

My elementary school would serve hot buttered white rice as a side for breakfast. I would add a packet of sugar and a splash of milk.
Try sliced banana on it. Or just the banana slices with milk and sugar. Tasty.
Here's another one from when I was a kid: Some raspberries, a torn-up piece of Wonder Bread, with milk and sugar.

Live minnows with butter. Be careful however and swallow head first so the gills don’t get stuck in your throat.
Fisherman No.1: Why do you keep dipping your minnows in butter?
Fisherman No.2: I catch a fish every time that way. It's always the same fish, but still.......

I believe that Philly cream cheese is the perfect food. It goes with most anything- sweet or savory.

I was just about to post this. Let's stop listing cream cheese combinations, they're not weird.

One of my favorite secret (but not weird) combos is cream cheese mixed with a couple jars of pimentos. Makes a great dip for potato chips.

as a kid, I ate celery with peanut butter AND blue cheese dressing on it at same time.
Now we're talking. I have a theory that peanut butter goes with everything. Or almost everything. No, everything.
While I've switched to almond butter, I will say that I've enjoyed peanut butter combined with many things.

However I vaguely remember trying a peanut butter and cheese whizz sandwich years ago. This combo didn't work out well for me.
Isn't there some sort of packaged snack on crackers that's been around forever that's basically this?

I don't think so. There are two separate things. Cheese cracker with PB, and crackers with cheese.

My son eats ramen like spaghetti, drained with tomato sauce and cheese. I tried it and didn't like it.
When I used to eat Top Ramen, I would drain it too. No tomato sauce & cheese, though. I'd just stir in the seasoning and eat the noodles. I had no idea it was actually supposed to be more of a soup. I guess I could have looked on the package but I was like 12 or 13 and didn't know any better.

This is how I've always eaten it.

People used to do this at 7-11. Open a bag of Fritos and then dump in their chili and cheese.

Cream cheese and olives sandwich. Ate this as a kid when we were home sick and still make it once a year or so.
cream cheese and cheetos on baguette.

this was a "oh crap, forgot lunch and have to run to the supermarket across the street from HS to scrounge" lunch... it was phenomenal.
The whole of the supermarket and that was what you got? There has to be a story there. It sound like one of those Guy Fieri grocery games or something.

My daughter dips her pizza in Ranch dressing
My son does this too, it feels like something younger folks got from social media.

There are pizza places in Portland that give ranch with the pizza. Detroit style places I think.
it’s definitely a thing in the Detroit area even if it’s not Detroit style pizza. I don’t care for not but my wife does. When I was in HS I would say 50/50 on whether kids would dip pizza/pepperoni rolls into ranch.

15yo? Yeah. That was it.

Oh yeah that explains it a million %

Potato Chips dipped in Apple Sauce
Fries dipped in a milk shake
Weird is right. The first I could see as a kid thing; liking both and just throwing them together and down the hatch at recess. You've got games to play.

But FRIES DIPPED IN A MILK SHAKE??? There's worse on here but this confounds me (not the first time I've seen it). Starting with one being hot and the other cold. Slices of fried hot potato with a cold, sugary shake is a kid being weird just to experiment or funny while both are served together.

And one you chew, the other you drink. The two textures and temps together would make my tongue go on strike. Do you still do it?
Wendy's fries dipped in their Frosty has

been a "thing" in these parts for as long as I can remember.

Yep. It’s a very rare treat for me these days because going into a Wendy’s is usually a bad experience.

As a kid I liked putting peanuts in a bottle of Coke.
Is that a Southern thing?
Yes. That's where peanuts are grown. People had to find a way to use them up. I tried it. Yuck. Makes your Coke really chunky.
Sounds terrible. No need to screw up the perfection that is Coke
I agree as an adult. One thing that putting peanuts in the coke is that it took the fizz away, which is the downside. However, I loved the taste.

I found it to be like having lumps of wet TP in your beverage.

Can confirm this - my wife likes to do that. I do not.

I don't know how weird these are but I have two. When I mention these to people I get some funny reactions. They're not weird to me. 1. Peanut Butter and jelly on a (bacon) cheeseburger. I'm a peanut butter fanatic so I love this combo.

2. Hot honey on pizza. Mighty tasty.

For some reason I seem to be the only one who doesn't like mixing in sweet with the non sweet. Nothing wrong with dessert, I just don't like it mixed into the meal.

Can you give some examples of sweet + savory combinations that others like that you don't?

My dad used to eat peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. He'd eat like 4 of those after getting home from work.
Saw a YT video the other day on forgotten depression era food and this was on it as well as a banana & mayo sandwich
It mentioned how peanut butter used to be very dry

Lots of southern food items listed already - most of these I don't care for but they are common around the areas I've lived:
  • Banana and Mayo sandwich
  • Tomato and Mayo sandwich
  • Peanuts in Coke - remember my uncle doing this 40-45 years ago
MIL has done ranch on pizza for a long time - I tried it and it's ok but I don't need to make my pizza more fattening and calorie dense.

Not Leroy, but chicken and waffles is not good. Or bacon on doughnuts. I don't even like honey glazed ham.

Agree with all of these. Even with a traditional bacon and egg breakfast I put butter on the toast or English muffin, not jam or jelly.

Great example. In the South chicken and waffles is like an expectation for breakfast. Just an odd combo for me personally.

I vaguely remember a dessert my mom would give us that was bananas coated with a sour cream & sugar mixture. Not sure if she added water or not because it was pretty liquidy....more so than normal sour cream.

Probably similar to a yogurt and bananas but a little more sour.

I think I liked it.

Are you calling mayo sweet or savory?

I also make salads without the lettuce. Iceberg lettuce has almost no nutritional value

If only they had come up with other types of lettuce by now!

:lmao:

My wife makes a kale salad with some apples and other tasty treats and man oh man do I sure like that.

You ever grill your lettuce? Did that once with blackened salmon and holy moly was that good.

Got the idea from a local joint that serves this:

Hardwood Grilled Steak Salad
Grilled romaine hearts, tenderloin steak medallions and flash fried brussels sprouts topped with multi-colored grape tomatoes, parmesan cheese, and our house-made lemon Caesar dressing.

Top 5 salad in the world, easy.

Ketchup and butter sandwiches. Had them at Gramma's house after preschool (around the corner) way back in the day. Still make it from time to time for a quick snack.

Or if I want some protein, a peanut butter and butter sandwich. Yum.

I actually threw up a little.
Maybe this will work for you....? Mayonnaise on bread. That's all. We called it a "Wish Sandwich", as in, we wish there was some meat in there. haha.

My best friend/neighbor growing up would put Saltines between two pieces of white bread with either mayo or Miracle Whip and called them "cracker sandwiches". His mom didn't cook.

That said, I've had more than a few cracker sandwiches growing up with him - not horrible.

I have proudly brought Frito Pie to Oregon and when I make @Judge Smails chili, it is served with the Frito Pie option, which is almost always taken by happy eaters.

Growing up in Dallas, this was a school lunch option at least a few times a month, might have been weekly. I actually ordered it down in Austin about 10 years ago and was delighted.....however, I had about 10 Lone Stars and let's just say those around me later at the Bob Schnieder concert were not too happy with my exhaust from cheap beer and Frito pie. :bag:
