What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

You know what's strange about Florida - almost no breweries make DIPAs. Florida is all about Pale Ales, IPAs, session IPAs, Weiss beers and of course Stouts.

Most breweries will brew a DIPA sometimes as a one off, but I don't know of any brewery that always has one available. I think its because of the weather, nobody wants to drink big beers in the heat. Seems the only reason everyone brews stouts is because there's always a demand for them.
That's funny because I don't find DIPAs heavy or big, yeah lots of alcohol but not something where it isn't refreshing. When I think big I think of heavy cold weather beers, like Porters and Stouts.
For me most DIPAs seem to have a lot of malty sweetness, which tends to somewhat mask the hops, even when its a balanced beer. I pretty much only like DIPAs when its cold out unless its one I've traded for or never tried. When its warm/hot, I want beers with hoppy crispness and lower ABV so I can enjoy more than a couple.Porters are pretty common down here though, not as common as stouts but way more common than DIPAs.
Your idea of cold is...
When you can turn the air conditioner off.
:lmao: It gets in the 20s here at night in Jan-Feb (sometimes) with highs in the 40s during the days...on those days I welcome high ABV beers. I'm not a huge porter/stout fan but I can deal with em when its cold chilly outside.

Can't wait to drink my CCB Good Gourd and Three Palms Palmkin on thanksgiving...I'm hoping its a bit nippy out.

Call me when your highs are in the 20s. (I'm jealous)

Odd, most of the DIPAs I have up here are super hopped palate wreckers. Not a ton of maltiness, but I have had those just not a lot. But like you I prefer my IPAs and DIPAs very hop forward, prefer more citrus hops, and low malt.
Citrus/tropical and even earthy/dank hops are my favorites. When a beer gets into 10%+ ABV territory, they can't help but have a good amount of sweetness, its just the nature of the beast - higher alcohol means more fermentable sugar needed to convert to alcohol.Nothing against those beers, if I still lived in Michigan I'd probably be drinking them all winter long.

I think I really liked Victory DirtWolf because it was a less than 9% DIPA so it still had the bitter without too much sweet.

I lived in Michigan from 83 to 94...I had my fill of ridiculous winters, which was the main reason I high tailed it outta there and came to FL.I didn't even have a plan really - I was 24, packed all I could into my 84 Cutlass supreme, and had $900 to my name. I had a place to stay but that was it. 20 years later I can say it was the best gamble I ever took.

Seems Ive been drinking solo lately...lol.

Cigar City Guayabera Pale Ale - pretty damn good. Pretty much Citra hop juice, they must have dry hopped the hell out of this.
Not today, wife brought home some Founders Harvest Ale. Will be drinking a few after dinner.
Must find!
Binny's had it in the back, none on the shelf. Limited to one 4 pack. Starting to really hate Binny's and how they limit everything, I am going to have to call my local shops tomorrow. And good luck on your search!
Called Binnys Orland Park and a local store....neither of them had it or received it yet. Local store said the latest offering they had from Founders was Dark Penance and he got some of that. If he saw Harvest available he would have gotten it but it wasn't.

Maybe I will hit S Loop on the way home tomorrow. Or drive out to Manteno which is about 15 miles from the house. Or hit up Ilov80s.

Guess I will have to settle for my Pliny vs Heady vs Miller Lite battle this weekend.

Hit me up, I'll hook you up whenever I can. Also, I just saw Jason "Khal Drogo" Momoa bought an old car plant in Detroit with plans to make a brewery.

:lmao: That Miller is sneaky...watch for the upset.

Speaking of Pliny, a buddy in San Diego is supposedly on the lookout for Pliny (elder), Blind Pig and Alpine Nelson for me...I sent him a bunch of Tampa beers and he hasn't sent a return package yet, but does have some grapefruit Sculpin that is going in the box...can't wait to get that package.

Got a nice shipment this past weekend with 2 Pliny, a Nelson, Pure hoppiness, duet, and BooKoo. Thanks again Sebowski.

Gonna be a good weekend.

Won the lite in a fantasy football bet from last year. Want to see how good it is when cellared. Triple hops brewed.

Calling out to the Chicago area guys on here (Ditka and Hawks), my son has a hockey game in Lake Forest Sunday morning that I will be driving in from Wisconsin. Does anyone know of any beer stores in the Lake Forest area that I can hit up? My main goal is to get some Pipeworks, but I am open to anything that I cannot get in Wisconsin. I noticed a place called Grand Cru Wine Merchants, but they are closed on Sundays. My sons' game is 8:45 so I suspect I am not going to find anything open until after 12, I'll probably be back home by then. I did see we play at Skokie and there is a Binny's a few miles away so I have circled that game as a must go to pick up some beers. Thanks for any input.

If you ever want to feel like you aren't a total drunk or just don't want to "drink alone", add me on untappd.

Next month will be 3 years on there and I'm 5 short of 6,000 beers. I should hit 600 Nelsons by then as well.

OHSO in Phoenix is a pretty nice nano brewery. Nice IPAs.
Good to know. One of my beer buddies is there this weekend. I'll point him there. He is going to try to check out Wilderness, but it is a bit off the path.A
AZ Wilderness is worth the trip. The food is as good as the beer. Fate in Scottsdale is another one to check out. OHSO is great place but I've been underwhelmed by their beers. They host a great selection of local beers and also do a lot collabs with the other local breweries. Phoenix is starting to get some great breweries with 3-4 more opening up soon that I'm really excited for.

Ugh, wish I would have known about this yesterday. This place is about the same distance from my hotel as OHSO.

OHSO had an orange pale ale, IPA, IIPA and a citrus IPA that I thought were all pretty good. Did not like the cherry porter or the 3 others so much. They also have 30 other guest taps FWIW.

####, 100 on Beer Advocate. I think I must have skipped over that when I was looking up breweries on BA, because I had no idea that Gilbert was so close to Phoenix.

I miss Mudshark's Full Moon. Can't get that anywhere in WI.

Finishing off the last of my Abita - a - thon. Abita is getting a little cocky flavor wise, adding a Lemon, Oktoberfest and Pecan. Not the best Lemon I've tasted, but the Pecan is pretty damn good. Wasn't overly sweet, and was a good change from their amber. Oktoberfest was pretty standard fare.

Going with their Abbey Ale tonight.

Not sure about local shops in Lake Forest but Binny's should have some Pipeworks, make sure you ask if they have anything behind the counter though, they keep the good stuff back there.

What's your Untappd? Hawks64 on there too....anyone feel free to add me. Only 74 checks so far with 62 distincts :kicksrock: I have to drink more!

Picked up a Southern Tier Pumpking...I've only had a couple ST beers and I was far from impressed...I'm hoping this is decent to good.

I spent a week in Estes Park in August. Heard "meh" things about the brewery there and took s road trip to Ft Collins instead. How's the IPA?

Drinking a Three Palms Starry Weiss (brewed w/starfruit). Super refreshing and tasty. 3.5 ABV so its a great beer for day drinking when you have to get things done.

At Hailstorm. Had a Prairie Madness mosaic ipa. Exceeds expectations but it's more bitter than fruity. Still damn good. Jesus Rye Toast Rye ipa on deck.

Death By Ale Tsunami: The London Beer Flood

Atlas Obscura on Slate is a blog about the world's hidden wonders. Like us on Facebook,Tumblr, or follow us on Twitter.

Two hundred years ago, eight Londoners died in one of the oddest ways imaginable. Or, to invoke the thoroughly British words of The Times' news report on the incident, "The neighbourhood of St. Giles's was thrown into the utmost consternation on Monday night, by one of the most melancholy accidents we ever remember."
On the evening in question—October 17, 1814—one of the vats at the Meux and Co. brewery burst, blowing apart the building's timber walls and sending the equivalent of 3500 barrels of beer cascading onto the streets.
The ale tsunami demolished two homes as it swept along what is now Tottenham Court Road in Bloomsbury. In other homes, according to the Times report on October 19, 1814, "inhabitants had to save themselves from drowning by mounting their highest pieces of furniture." Others were not so lucky, such as a mother and daughter who had just sat down to tea in their first-floor home: in the evocative words of the Times, the daughter was "swept away by the current through a partition, and dashed to pieces."
In all, eight people died in the London Beer Flood. Five others were injured badly enough to be taken to hospital, and three brewery employees were rescued by flabbergasted volunteers, who had to wade through waist-deep beer cluttered with debris.
Contemporary Londoners who wish to pay their respects should head to Holborn: this Saturday, to comemmorate the 200th anniversary of the bizarre disaster, theHolborn Whippet bar will be offering free roasted chestnuts and a selection of three specially brewed porters.
Americans can wait until January 15, the anniversary of the U.S. counterpart to the London Beer Flood: the Boston Molasses Flood of 1919, during which 21 people died in a sweet, sticky tsunami.
Visit Atlas Obscura for more on the London Beer Flood and other flooding-food disasters.

Been a pretty wide variety tonight. Harvest Ale, Lil' Sumpin' Sumpin' and now BeerD-Os. BeerD-Os is not as good after heavy hopped IPAs....so the advice here is BeerD-Os first then the IPAs/DIPAs.

Went to a Drakes Brewery tap take over had a few can't remember the names. IPA A and IPA B.Good but not great. Came home to have SN Pale Ale and SN Oktoberfest.

Iv'e seen this stuff at Costco can only imagine the crap it must be. But please report.

They stack the stuff to the ceiling at my local Costco.

I agree with Hawks here. I don't make it up to Lake Forest very often so I have no clue what is available up there.

Binnys should have some Pipeworks but it will sell out of the highly sought after releases very quickly. Revolution makes some good beers as does Half Acre. Urbanhack pimps Spiteful every once in awhile but I haven't had anything by them yet since I have to go out of my way a little to get anything from them. They are on my long list.

Did a quick search on Beer Menus since I am not familiar with the area. This place looks promising:

Get some BrooDoo if you can.
