Report: Chris Johnson on radar of Cowboys, Giants, JetsBy Chris Wesseling

Around the League Writer

Chris Johnson is in Nashville, Tenn., today for a face-to-face meeting with Titans general manager Ruston Webster, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday night.

Tennessee is expected to release its star running back shortly thereafter, per Rapoport.

Once Johnson hits the open market, look for the Giants and Cowboys to join the Jets in kicking his tires.

Although the Jets' interest is widely known, FOX Sports' Mike Garofolo reports the Cowboys and Giants also were among the teams that have inquired since Johnson hit the trade block early last month.

The Jets and Cowboys -- leading Around The League's list of CJ2K's potential landing spots -- likely will be the most ardent suitors.

The Giants already have added former Raiders running back Rashad Jennings, and coach Tom Coughlin is "counting on" 2012 first-round draft pick David Wilson contributing this season.

Since the Jets have the second-most salary-cap space of any NFL team, they will have the upper hand if the bidding for Johnson goes well over the going rate of $3 million annually for veteran running backs.

The latest "Around The League Podcast" welcomes NFL Media's Jeff Darlington to the studio, reacts to the DeSean Jackson signing and discusses big-name veterans still looking for new teams.

Sources: If RB Chris Johnson is released as expected by Titans, NY Jets would be interested in former All-Pro

The Jets’ slow and steady march toward a revamped offense this offseason may include adding a former star running back who has lost his way in recent years.

The Titans’ widely anticipated release of Chris Johnson on Friday raises the question whether the three-time Pro Bowler’s next destination could be Rex Ryan’s team. Sources told the Daily News this week that the Jets have some level of interest in the 28-year-old Johnson if the price is right.

General manager John Idzik’s to-do list has included bolstering the backfield. The Jets made a serious run and had the inside track on Colts free-agent running back Donald Brown before he signed with the Chargers. Idzik also had interest and discussions with Maurice Jones-Drew’s camp before the veteran inked a three-year deal with the Raiders.

The Titans had been actively shopping Johnson, who was scheduled to make $8 million in base salary and count $10 million against the 2014 cap. The team’s offseason workout program will begin on Monday, leaving a de facto deadline for the team to make a decision on their former bell cow’s future.

Johnson, who had knee surgery in January to repair a torn meniscus that bothered him for much of last season, has had a steady decline in production since signing a four-year, $53.5 million extension in 2011.

The player formerly known as CJ2K rushed for more than a 1,000 yards for the sixth consecutive season in 2013, but had a career-low 3.9 yards per carry. Johnson was scheduled to take a physical at the Titans facility on Friday before parting ways with Tennessee.

The Jets, who have the second-most amount of money available under the cap at about $29 million, have taken a judicious approach during free agency. Although Johnson’s production has dipped in recent years, he would be a good addition to the Jets’ backfield with Chris Ivory. A Johnson-Ivory tandem would be an improvement from last season.

The biggest question will be Johnson’s price tag. The depressed free-agent running back market this offseason suggests that Johnson is in line to get $3-$4 million annually. Brown and Toby Gerhart each received $3.5 annually in their respective three-year deals. Jones-Drew’s three-year pact with Oakland is for $7.5 million. Ben Tate signed a two-year contract with the Browns.

The Jets only have $3.43 million in base salary allotted to running backs Ivory, Bilal Powell and Mike Goodson for 2014. Their collective cap number is just $4.55 million. Johnson’s arrival could make Goodson, who is still dealing with legal issues stemming from an arrest last summer, expendable.

Ivory rushed for 833 yards in his first season with the Jets, but he still has durability concerns. The bruising back was hampered by hamstring issues in training camp and suffered a cracked rib and hip pointer in the season finale against the Dolphins. Johnson has played 16 games for five consecutive seasons.

Johnson, a first-round pick in 2008, may not be the same dynamic home run hitter with the 4.24 40-yard speed that he was coming out of college, but he’s still dangerous in open spaces. A shaky offensive line in Tennessee may have contributed to his statistical dip. Some believe that the lack of holes turned him into a more hesitant runner.

The 5-11, 208-pound Johnson has not been able to reproduce his magical 2009 season that included 2,006 rushing yards, 2,509 total yards and 16 total touchdowns.

It’s unclear what the market for Johnson will be, but the Rams, led by Johnson’s former coach Jeff Fisher, and Cowboys might make some sense too. He would be a quality addition for Rex & Co., who need as many playmakers as they can get.

Titans released RB Chris Johnson.
The move has been in the works for weeks, if not months. The Titans save $6 million versus the cap and eat a $4 million dead money hit. Johnson isn't the same player as the one that rushed for 2,006 yards in 2009 and earned him the moniker CJ2K, but he still has excellent speed and hasn't missed a game since his rookie season. There's no chance he'll find the $8 million salary he was scheduled to earn on the open market, but Johnson is easily the best back to hit free agency this offseason. He won't be a true No. 1 like he was in Tennessee, either. Johnson is merely a complementary piece to a backfield. Look for the Jets and Cowboys to show interest. The Patriots and Rams could also be in the mix.

Why the Bills - he's just an older version of Spiller at this point? And why the Dolphins who just signed Moreno?

. The negotiations with the Dolphins probably took place prior to signing Moreno.

The Bills discussion is confusing.

Bills, Dolphins were top suitors for CJ

By Paul Kuharsky | ESPN.com

The Titans held on to Chris Johnson until Friday because they felt they had potential to trade him.

At least two teams gave Tennessee a real sense that a deal could be reached. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported four teams were interested, but a source tells me Miami and Buffalo were the teams that came closest to making a move.

Johnson would have had to reduce his contract, which called for base salaries of $8 million, $8 million and $7 million.

I can't envision Johnson wanting to go to Buffalo. Choosing to hit the open market instead of facilitating a trade there would be an understandable move.

The Dolphins and Miami might be attractive. But if he didn't like the Titans' offensive line in transition, the shakeup the Dolphins have undergone hardly suggests a line that will have jelled by opening day.

Interest in Johnson is surprising but not shocking. Fred Jackson and Spiller both free agents after this season. Change at RB on horizon.
I expect the Bills to have a completely different backfield next year. Spiller will be 28 and has not proven to be a guy the team can depend on.
Wat? Spiller has missed 3 games in 4 years and has a career YPC > 5 -- he's been splitting with Jackson because Jackson is also damn good, not because Spiller isn't dependable.

I think the Cowboys are out of the CJ1K race.

We only have $5MM left in cap space and another $5MM to sign FA's when we release Miles Austin.

There are too many other holes on Defense to fill to spend all of it on CJ1K.

Obviously, there wasn’t enough interest in Chris Johnson (& his contract) for #Titans to be able to deal him. Source says #Jets came closest

I'll rephrase that...I don't think he's an every down back but the Bills would likely have to pay him like one to keep him. It's more likely they choose to replace him in the draft next year than give him a big contract.

Coughlin saying that he is praying David Wilson is healthy in 2014 makes me wonder about the Giants now. Have they some injury news where they should dip a toe in the CJ waters?

Giants have shown interest now, many articles out there today

"yards left on the field" supposedly really frustrated Titans coaches. I'm curious if this is also why Fisher and Rams seem to not be interested.

IMO with a back that has blinding speed N burst, there will always be yards left on the field. It always seems possible he's "off to the races" but in reality it's far less often. 1 in 30 1 in 40...idk but when you watch him every week, there's this feeling his style breeds that feels like it's about to happen if he just gets a little space. Naturally, you're let down until he actually does "take off."

Sure, but those Titans coaches were completely clueless as to how to use Johnson, so both parties can share a large piece of the blame on the pie chart as to why Johnson didn't produce more the last couple years.

Spiller has an option next year that pays him about $2m. Likely he will want to test the market unless the Bills lock him up before then.

They were pretty unhappy with his running last year, he made bad cuts and the wrong choice way too much.

In his defense, he was hurt after game 4, and his grandfather committed murder/suicide at the end of spring training so i dont think we got a fair assessment of his ability.

The Bills interest tells me they are far apart in contract talks with Spiller.

I couldn't dislike Loggains offense any more.

That said, he's a tough back to utilize when defenses are so very ready for him, especially a disciplined D. Getting him out in space isn't easy against a disciplined D.

In the game threads, we often rooted for a screen pass. Usually at that point the D had proven they had covered the field very well and he wasn't breaking through.

When Wright learned to use his ridiculous lateral speed, the Titans never showcased this with some medium or deep routes where he could create some space for CJ and demand the Ds attention. Instead they gave him these dink n dunk routes and as long as they weren't too many yards, defenses didn't seem too concerned. The Titans didn't do anything to bring focus away from CJ.

If he were to sign with the Broncos (aside from some oddly unique overcrowding a field with stars problem) I totally wonder how many yards he could run for. I do think he can "take off" twice a game and if you predict stats for that they wind up being ridiculously high.

They would run into a bit of the same problem as the Titans did in that he has become the poor short yardage RB people incorrectly thought he was when he was younger. The tough grind it out 3 yards, he's not getting but instead looks like he hit a brick wall. Yet if you don't put him in, you won't give him the opportunity to break one. It isn't like oh let's have CJ break a long run here and they just call a play that's an 80 yard run-people act like such a play exists but really it's more fortunate for an offense.

I don't think it's a role CJ wants, but he would be a killer replacement for Sproles in New Orleans.
Drove me crazy then and it's driven me crazy since that the Saints did not draft him back when.

And he would be awesome in that role, and the Saints would be awesome with him, but they let Sproles go after all partly because they needed the cap space (partly), but then CJ would have to, as you say, be willing to accept the chemistry of the Saints, which means to never have a 'me first' mentality not to mention having knowing you will be one of several RBs that can be RB1 one moment and RB4 the next. But oh boy he would be great in that offense.

I know there are reports saying Atlanta is not interested but I think Atlanta would be the perfect landing spot.

CJ would not have to carry the load with SJax still around.

Give CJ 15-18 touches a game including 3-5 targets

Teams would have to respect Ryan and his wrs in 3 wr sets

CJ will see a light boxes and lots of running lanes. If you watch game tape from last year if there was a crease CJ hit it and was gone many times.

Makes alot of sense to me but I am not sure what Atlanta's cap numbers look like.

$8.7M but they have salaries (notably Matt Ryan's $9.5M) they could convert into signing bonuses to free up money if they wanted to sign him.

It seems the market for RB is really cold. All I heard thus far are speculations. There are actually many teams could use an upgrade. Probably his price tag is too high which turned off some teams? It will be really interesting to see what he lands.

I don't think he is a game changer anymore like his pre-injury self. But in a good situation, he will be very productive for a few years to come.

much better to draft a good one in the 2nd/3rd round and pay them squat on their rookie contract over picking up an expensive vet who will take up a bunch of cap room.

Quote from another article:

General manager Ruston Webster said the Titans thank Johnson for his contributions, setting so many franchise records and being durable over his six seasons with Tennessee.

“We have had an open dialogue with Chris’ agent, Joel Segal, over the last few weeks, and we appreciate the patience and professionalism they have shown throughout this process,” Webster said in statement. “We made an effort to trade Chris but were unable to do so.”

Report: Rams won't be interested in acquiring RB Chris JohnsonRotoworld:

A Bills source tells the Buffalo News the club never had interest in free agent Chris Johnson.
Reports surfaced late last week that the Bills "discussed" a trade for Johnson, prior to his Friday release. As it turns out, the Titans contacted the Bills -- not the other way around -- and Buffalo informed Tennessee it had no interest in CJ?K. Per beat writer Tim Graham, the Bills source believes the Titans "floated the Bills as a possible trade partner" to the media "to make it seem like they didn't just cut him." Whatever the case, Johnson isn't going to Buffalo.

Jets, Falcons, or Broncos.

Will be interesting to see where he lands. I think any of those will be good to great landing spots.
