QB Jimmy Garoppolo, LAR (2 Viewers)

Jimmy Garoppolo completed 19-of-33 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns in San Francisco's 24-20 Week 1 loss to the Cardinals.

Don't let the box score fool you. Garoppolo (and the Niners' offense as a whole) was completely out of rhythm on Sunday, overthrowing wide-open receivers in the back of the end zone, flailing 50-50 ducks down the sideline and, perhaps even more frustrating, checking down before a receiver could run himself open over the top. Garoppolo did hit Raheem Mostert in stride for a 76-yard touchdown strike and, later on, Jerick McKinnon (6/44/1) for the latter's first touchdown since 2017, but it was an underwhelming afternoon that saw the Niners start the year 0-1 rather than an obtainable 1-0 due solely to the quarterback's poor performance through the final three quarters. Perhaps Brandon Aiyuk's (hamstring) return will right the ship since San Francisco was forced to lean on Dante Pettis and Kendrick Bourne in Week 1. Garoppolo will be a matchup-based QB2 in Week 2 against the Jets.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) completed 14-of-16 passes for 131 yards and two scores but did not return after halftime in the 49ers' 31-13 win over the Jets.

Garoppolo played through the ankle injury for a handful of drives before heading to the locker room just before halftime. He had an efficient first half but the injury is all that will be on the minds of San Francisco fans. The 49ers defense would normally be able to hold their own for a few weeks without Garoppolo but Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas were both carted off and did not return. Nick Mullens played in the second half and went 8-of-11 with an interception. The 49ers took home an easy win in Week 2 but it may have come at a serious cost.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is week to week.

“We knew it was getting worse but not better,” Shanahan said of Jimmy Garoppolo’s high-ankle sprain and the decision to remove him at halftime. Shanahan said there's still a "chance" Garoppolo suits up against the Giants in Week 3, but fantasy players should pivot to Nick Mullens ahead of their leaguemates as the safer play. Mullens completed 8-of-11 passes for 71 yards and a pick in mop-up duty against the Jets.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.

As expected. Nick Mullens is the favorite to start this week against the Giants. Garoppolo is considered week to week with a high-ankle sprain. He'll have a better shot of suiting up for Week 4.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.

This is not a good sign for his availablity ahead of Sunday's game against the Eagles. Kyle Shanahan initially termed Jimmy G's ankle injury as "week-to-week", and missing Week 4 would make two straight absences for Garoppolo. The 49ers might be aiming for a Week 5 return for their quarterback against the Dolphins.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankled) remained sidelined Thursday.

Nick Mullens has taken every first-team rep this week. Garoppolo is going to miss another game vs. the Eagles. With zero reps under his belt since getting injured in Week 2, Garoppolo is looking questionable to return in Week 5 against the Dolphins.

#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says Jimmy Garoppolo will be limited in practice today, no declaration but good sign toward a Sunday start vs #Dolphins
Mostert also will be limited

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said it's "looking like" Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will start in Week 5 against the Dolphins.

We're waiting for the team's official Friday injury reports, but after limited practices this week, you can pencil in Garoppolo to start against Miami. The Niners' offensive weapons are slowly returning from injury -- including Raheem Moster, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel -- giving Jimmy G a full complement of weapons in his first action since Week 2. He's a low-end QB2 against Miami.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) was cleared and will start for Week 5 against the Dolphins.

Garoppolo, who has yet to play a full game with all of George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel (illness, questionable), is returning for an opportune matchup opposite a Dolphins secondary that's allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks. Raheem Mostert (knee, questionable) also has a shot to return on Sunday.

Speaking Tuesday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Jimmy Garoppolo avoided setbacks with his injured ankle in Week 5's loss to the Dolphins.

Seeming to have trouble planting his injured foot, Garoppolo was benched after a ghastly first half vs. the Dolphins, but Shanahan hinted it was because he knew the Niners would have to throw nonstop in comeback mode, exposing an ineffective Garoppolo to further injury. "Jimmy came in good (on Monday)," Shanahan said. "I know he's sore from the first half. I think his ankle is a little bit sore and his body a little bit from some of the hits that he had. But nothing that made it worse. It was like you would expect after a game. Nothing too bad happened. We got him out of there before that did." Barring a setback, Garoppolo should be under for a tough matchup with the Rams. Playing poorly and still a health question mark, Garoppolo will be a barely-there QB2 in super FLEX leagues.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is practicing in full for Week 6 against the Rams.

There was little doubt Garoppolo would be under center against the Rams after coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed he avoided setbacks in Week 5, but this cements it. The question, of course, is Jimmy G's potential effectiveness, as he was a trainwreck against the Dolphins as he had trouble planting his injured back foot. With Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey ready to mess with the 49ers' program, Garoppolo is a barely-there QB2 for Week 6.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will start in Week 6 against the Rams.

Garoppolo practiced every day this week "without limitations" and, per coach Kyle Shanahan, looked healthier. Sunday is a tantalizing spot opposite Los Angeles' defense but Garoppolo should not be trusted for re-draft leagues until he has proved he's fully removed from his high-ankle sprain. He ranks as RotoPat's QB17 for Week 6.

Jimmy Garoppolo completed 23-of-33 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns in the 49ers' Week 6 win over the Rams.

Garoppolo started hot, completing 14 of his first 16 passes. He did all his damage early, with 193 yards and all three of his touchdowns coming in the first half. This was a needed rebound for Garoppolo after he was benched in the second half last week. Garoppolo looked healthy and seemed to be getting more drive behind his passes. The 49ers improved to 3-3 with the win. Garoppolo is trending up, but he has a tough matchup with the Patriots' secondary in Week 7.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will be sidelined indefinitely.

It's possible he lands on injured reserve to ensure more time to heal. Garoppolo, clearly rushed back from the high-ankle sprain he suffered in Week 2, failed to finish two of the four starts he made since returning from injury. He'll get multiple opinions before ultimately making a decision on whether or not he should undergo season-ending surgery or hold off until the end of the year. Nick Mullens earned Pro Football Focus' fifth-highest grade among quarterbacks off the bench Sunday and will get the nod without George Kittle (foot), who's also expected to miss eight weeks, moving forward.

To be clear, are you looking for a QB who can stay healthy and fresh fruits and vegetables?  Or a healthy QB who can play in a productive fashion.  Asking for a friend.

49ers placed QB Jimmy Garoppolo on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain.

It's a "whole new" high-ankle sprain than the one Garoppolo suffered in Week 2. "It is worse than the last one," and Jimmy G will be sidelined 4-6 weeks. The "hope" is that he will return in mid-to-late December, but surgery could eventually become a necessity. That means it will be Nick Mullens under center against the Packers on Thursday, though it could become a weekly question where it is Mullens or C.J. Beathard under center. Considering how poorly Garoppolo has played this season, it is not a death knell for the 49ers' few remaining non-injured skill players. Despite the "return in 2020" hope, there is a chance Garoppolo has played his final down for the 49ers. He can't stay healthy, has underperformed and can be cut loose with little cap ramification next offseason.

NFL Rumors & Draft News: Is Jimmy Garoppolo in 49ers’ long-term plans?

Excerpt:

Do you think the 49ers still see Jimmy Garoppolo as their quarterback of the future, or are there NFL rumors that the Niners may be looking to upgrade the position in the offseason?

It’s still early, but I’ve heard this: the 49ers still see Jimmy Garoppolo as their QB of the future, but they will likely address the position in the NFL Draft and will not pass up a good QB if there’s one staring them in the face. Think Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles, for example.

Could the 49ers move on from Jimmy Garoppolo? Options to replace him in 2021, plus San Francisco's other issues

Excerpt:

Will Jimmy Garoppolo be the 49ers' starter in 2021?

Given what has happened, the biggest issue facing the 49ers next offseason is what they decide to do about their quarterback situation. A year ago, I floated an idea about them possibly replacing Garoppolo with Tom Brady after the Super Bowl, but that was more of a pipe dream than something the team would realistically have considered. After 2020, things are a little different.

The ideal starting NFL quarterback means a lot of things to a lot of people, but broadly, every team wants three things. They want a passer who is cheap, reliably healthy and capable of a Pro Bowl-caliber ceiling when things are right around him. There aren't many quarterbacks who are ever all three things at the same time for long. Right now, the only one who might fit all three categories is Lamar Jackson.

Most teams are happy if they can find a quarterback who fits two of those three criteria; most commonly, they'll go for healthy and extremely productive (Patrick Mahomes) or cheap and healthy (Joe Burrow). In other cases, like late-career Eli Manning or Gardner Minshew, teams are willing to settle for one of the three. This is a relatively simplistic way to look at things, but it's a good place to start.

Can you say with any confidence that Garoppolo fits any of those three criteria? Start with the issue of health, since it's the most obvious problem for him. Past injuries aren't always indicative of future health, but his track record with regard to staying on the field is a serious, serious red flag.

In 2016, when Garoppolo took over for the suspended Brady in New England, he started two games before separating his shoulder, ending his brief reign as the starter. In 2017, he spent the season on the bench before being traded to San Francisco, where he took over the starting job for the final five games of the year. In 2018, he tore his ACL after three games. While he was healthy for all 16 starts in 2019, he suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2 this season and then suffered the same injury again four starts after returning.

In three of his five seasons, Garoppolo has suffered a serious injury within three games. There has been just one season in his career in which he has started even six games in a row without suffering an injury. Some quarterbacks just struggle to play for extended periods of time without getting hurt -- Chad Pennington, Andrew Luck and more recently Carson Wentz coming to mind. At this point, the preponderance of evidence suggests Garoppolo might have his issues staying healthy.

The production is also a question, although less so than his health. Since joining the 49ers in 2017, he ranks 12th in the league in Total QBR, just ahead of Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers. That's promising, but we can also poke holes in his performance. Garoppolo has thrown deep on only 7.2% of his throws over that time frame, the lowest mark in the league for any quarterback with at least 700 attempts since the start of 2017.

He has thrown deep less frequently than avowed underneath throwers like Drew Brees, Joe Flacco and Marcus Mariota over that same time frame. Quarterbacks don't necessarily need to throw deep to succeed, but it's pretty clear that coach Kyle Shanahan wants his quarterbacks to take and hit their shots downfield; Matt Ryan threw passes 20 or more yards in the air 11.2% of the time during his MVP season in 2016 -- when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta -- which was the 11th-highest rate in the league.

Does Garoppolo have a top-tier ceiling? We likely can't say anything with total confidence, but I'm skeptical. To try to get a sense of what each quarterback's ceiling looks like, I went through the last decade and found their top eight performances by adjusted yards per attempt (AY/A), then calculated the AY/A for those eight combined appearances. Garoppolo's eight best performances produced an average of 11.5 adjusted yards per attempt. That's 30th over the last decade, around Case Keenum, Joe Flacco and Jay Cutler. His numbers could rise with more appearances and opportunities to excel, but his best doesn't look to be extraordinary.

Is there something not accounted for in the numbers? Garoppolo was tied for the league lead with four fourth-quarter comebacks during the 2019 season, but even that number is generous. One of those drives started on the Pittsburgh 25-yard line after a fumble. The win over the Saintssaw him complete one 8-yard pass before converting fourth-and-2 with that 39-yard pass to Kittle, who (charitably) did the vast majority of the work. Other guys have drives like this, too, but I'm not sure we can point toward Jimmy G's fourth-quarter comebacks as proof that he's doing more than it seems.

Furthermore, he doesn't actually throw all that frequently. Even if we throw out the seasons in which he got hurt and just focus on 2019, he threw just under 30 passes per game. Twenty-six teams had starters with more pass attempts per game than Garoppolo. He then threw 19 passes in the wild-card round win over the Vikings and just eight in the NFC title game blowout of the Packers before throwing 31 times against the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. On his final 10 throws of the game, Garoppolo went 2-of-10 for 24 yards with an interception.

OK, so Garoppolo struggles to stay healthy and is a low-volume, low-ceiling passer. What about his contract? Well, funny you should ask. The 49ers structured his five-year, $137.5 million extension with a huge roster bonus in its first year (2018) to create more flexibility in the later years of the deal. There's no guaranteed money left on his deal, although he has $7.5 million in injury guarantees next year. Those injury guarantees shouldn't trigger if he misses the rest of the season, since his ankle sprain should heal with extended rest.

Next year, Garoppolo has an unguaranteed base salary of $24.1 million. His cap hit would be $26.9 million, and the 49ers would free up all of that $24.1 million if they chose to cut or trade him before June 1. At the moment, he would have the 11th-largest cap hit among NFL quarterbacks next season. If the team could guarantee he would be healthy for all 16 games, that would probably represent fair value. If there's a significant chance that he plays only five or six games, though, it's hard to see how his deal makes sense for the 49ers.

If they agree, the 49ers could try to get him to take a pay cut or release him outright. They could try to get a trade done, although I'm not sure there would be a huge market. Garoppolo has two years and $51 million in unguaranteed money left on his deal, which is more than the Panthers needed to sign Teddy Bridgewater in free agency last March. Bridgewater got $42 million over the first two years of his deal, $33 million of which was fully guaranteed at signing.

There would be one team that looms as an obvious fit for Garoppolo, of course. The Patriots will have more cap space than the 49ers and don't have a solution under contract for 2021. Cam Newton and Brian Hoyerare both free agents after the season, leaving Jarrett Stidham as the only quarterback under contract. They have publicly suggested that they think Stidham can be their quarterback of the future, but he has thrown four interceptions in 27 career pass attempts.

If the 49ers wanted to move on from Garoppolo, the Patriots would be the most logical suitors and the best landing spot for the veteran. The return would not be as exciting as Niners fans might hope; it's difficult to imagine New England sending much more than a mid-to-late-round pick in return for him. How could San Francisco replace him?

Jimmy Garoppolo (high-ankle sprain) has shed his walking boot.

Dealing with his second high-ankle sprain of the season, Garoppolo will not return before December. Shanahan has made it clear that the 49ers will not shut Garoppolo down. He also claimed Tuesday that Jimmy G will return as the team's starter in 2021. It is far too early to take that talk seriously.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects Jimmy Garoppolo to be the starting quarterback in 2021.

The saying goes, "If you have to ask if he's the franchise quarterback, then he's not the franchise quarterback." With Garoppolo missing time with injuries and capping the upside of the offense when healthy, there's speculation that Shanahan will at least be willing to swipe right on a new quarterback this offseason. The 49ers can easily get out of his contract but that will depend on which quarterbacks become available in the draft, in free agency, and in trades. For now, Shanahan will be band-aiding an offense led by Nick Mullens while Garoppolo rehabs his high-ankle sprain. Garoppolo could return sometime in December.

49ers designated QB Jimmy Garoppolo (high-ankle sprain) to return from injured reserve.

Garoppolo's return to practice comes right as Nick Mullens is getting shut down with an elbow injury, but coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Tuesday Garoppolo will not suit up for the rest of the season. The Niners just want to get his feet wet heading into the offseason. C.J. Beathard will be under center for Saturday's game against the Cardinals, so Garoppolo is not worth a speculative add in two-QB or super FLEX leagues. The next question is whether Jimmy G will be back as San Francisco's starter in 2021.

Dec 22, 2020, 2:16 PM ET

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle, I.R.) is out for Week 17 against the Seahawks.

Garoppolo hasn't played since Week 8 and started just six games this season after "managing" the 49ers to the Super Bowl last year on the back of a great defense. Garoppolo went 94-of-140 this season (67.1%) for 1,096 yards (7.8 YPA) and a measly 7:5 TD:INT mark. The Niners know Garoppolo isn't a game-changer at the position, and coach Kyle Shanahan refused to fully commit to Garoppolo being back as the starter in 2021. He has two years left on his deal, but the Niners can clear $24.1 million in cap space by releasing Garoppolo this offseason, absorbing a dead cap hit of just $2.8 million. It almost seems like a no-brainer move.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports "it would take a big swing" at quarterback for the 49ers to move on from QB Jimmy Garoppolo.

Fowler reported that the 49ers are still satisfied with starting Garoppolo under center. He added that something like a trade for Deshaun Watson would have to happen before the team chooses to make a move at quarterback. Garoppolo is 22-8 as the starter in San Francisco and led the team on an impressive run to the Super Bowl a year ago. The team was also a defensive stalwart in that season so something as simple as QB Wins doesn't tell the whole story. However, there aren't many chances at getting an elite quarterback so the odds that San Francisco is able to find a meaningful upgrade are slim. San Francisco doesn't have the same amount of assets to move for Watson as the Jets or Dolphins so all signs point to at least one more season for Garoppolo. He completed 67.1 percent of his passes and averaged 7.8 yards per attempt in 2020. He could also take another step forward if the team gets healthy seasons from Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel next year.

Jimmy Garoppolo's $51.1 million over the final two years of his contract is not guaranteed.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe said if the Patriots acquired Garoppolo this offseason, they "could move on at any point. That would give them the freedom to still spend a high pick on a quarterback" in the upcoming NFL Draft. Howe added that "Garoppolo would be more valuable to the Patriots than anyone else, which is why I’d be surprised if the 49ers had many suitors." The Niners continue to insist the constantly-injured Garoppolo isn't available -- it's a transparent effort to gain leverage on the Patriots or another trade partner. Garoppolo, who started two games for the Pats in his three seasons with New England, would be familiar with the team's offense, giving him an edge on free agents signal callers. He would be a fantasy non-factor in the Patriots' skill-deficient offense.

I bought JG this off-season in SF/TE premium+. I gave Hayden Hurst and Cam for Jimmy and a dart throw TE (Firkser).

I feel like I bought low on a guy whose pretty much guaranteed to be starting somewhere in 2020, but maybe I'm just a sucker 😂.

Speaking Wednesday, 49ers GM John Lynch said "I really believe" Jimmy Garoppolo will be the team's starting quarterback in 2021.

Lynch made it sound more like he needs to upgrade the Niners' backup spot behind injury-riddled Garoppolo. “When he’s healthy, he’s played at a high level,” Lynch said. “But we probably have to add someone. We probably need to improve ourselves, so if he’s not there, we’re all right; we can win games." C.J. Beathard is a free agent, and Nick Mullens is a restricted one. The Niners went 13-3 when Garoppolo was healthy for all 16 games in 2019 and advanced to the Super Bowl. But he missed 10 games last season and has been unable to stay healthy for long stretches as a pro. There was speculation the Niners could look to move on this offseason, but Garoppolo's $26.4 million cap number isn't as bad in today's quarterback landscape.
