2012 Packers Offseason (1 Viewer)

Defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove's visit this week to the Green Bay Packers, as first reported by Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, tells us the team is serious about using free agency to improve a vexing hole in its defense.

The Packers' conservative approach to the open market in recent years has been well-documented, and historically they don't bring in players for visits if they don't have significant interest. Hargrove is the second veteran free agent to visit Lambeau Field this month. The first, center Jeff Saturday, signed a two-year contract worth $7.75 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Hargrove, 28, is an aggressive pass-rusher who also plays the run well. He projects as an end in the Packers' 3-4 scheme and can also play tackle when they use their nickel. He's listed at 272 pounds but played close to 300 pounds as recently as the 2010 season, when he was with the New Orleans Saints.

Love the Jeff Saturday signing. Age is obviously a concern, but he was a top 5 center last year.

I am still concerned about linebacker. Aside from Bishop and Matthews, there are a ton of holes. Desperately need a pass rush opposite Matthews. I have given up on getting an upgrade over Hawk, as the front office seems to think he is better than average.

I've read they have serious interest in Hargrove, Lawson, and one other guy.

I am betting DJ Smith pushes Hawk for playing time this year.

My sources were correct then. :lmao:

Hargrove didn't impress last year in Bears camp and was cut. However, we run different schemes...so perhaps he may work much better in the 3-4.ETA: Appears that no deal is finalized yet http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/56171/no-packers-anthony-hargrove-deal-yet

Packers Draft Picks

PALM BEACH, Fla. — After the news yesterday that the Packers received four compensatory draft picks, the maximum awarded in a given year, here’s a breakdown by round of the Packers’ 12 picks in the 2012 draft:

Round 1: 28th overall

Round 2: 59th

Round 3: 90th

Round 4: 123rd, 132 (compensatory), 133 (compensatory)

Round 5: 163rd

Round 6: 197th

Round 7: 224th (from the Jets in the trade for Caleb Schlauderaff), 235th, 241st (compensatory), 243rd (compensatory)
With TT using free-agency this year and having 12 draft picks the Packers may have to add on to the locker room.

Packers interested in free agent LT Bell

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Packers may not be done in free agency.

They’re reportedly interested in left tackle Demetrius Bell, a former starter for the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo radio station WGR 550 AM reported that Bell has a visit scheduled with the Packers next week.

That could be a sign the Packers will part ways with veteran Chad Clifton, who played in parts of only six regular-season games last season because of injuries. Clifton’s base salary for 2012 is $5.25 million, which may be more than the Packers want to pay a 36-year-old.

The Packers have Marshall Newhouse, who started in Clifton’s place last season but also may be unsure whether last year’s first-round pick, Derek Sherrod, will be recovered from his broken leg by the start of the season.

Bell, 28, has had injury problems of his own. He has played in all 16 games only once in his four-year NFL career.

Tollefson visit scheduled for Thursday

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Dave Tollefson is coming back to Green Bay — for a visit.

The free agent defensive end, originally a seventh-round pick of the Packers in 2006, will meet with the Packers on Thursday and Friday, according to an NFL source.

Tollefson has played the last five seasons for the New York Giants. He spent his rookie season with the Packers, splitting time between the practice squad and injured reserve.

With the Giants, he has 10 sacks in 81 regular-season games mostly in a backup role, but had five of those sacks last season. He played defensive end in the Giants’ 4-3 scheme. At 6-foot-4 and 266 pounds, he’s a bit of a ‘tweener at defensive end/outside linebacker for the Packers’ 3-4 defense. When the Packers drafted him, they played a 4-3 and considered Tollefson an end.

Glad to see them bringing in some prospects anyway. They truly missed Cullen last season.
Very true, some speed too. The past few years they have lacked d linemen sometimes playing o linemen there. This is a good signing.
Yeah I think it was pretty apparent last season that defensive help is needed. I'd like to see some more speed guys to rush the passer. They need one or two more pass rushers. Clay is great but he can be neutralized with proper game planning and they need a few others to pick up the slack.

Draft needs: Green Bay Packers

By Pete Prisco | CBSSports.com Senior NFL Columnist

The Green Bay Packers appeared on their way to back-to-back titles late last season, with the playoffs going through Lambeau Field last January.

But along the way the New York Giants came in and upset Green Bay, putting an end to a season that was special in a lot of ways, other than the ending.

The Packers, who were the No. 1 seed in the NFC and flirted with an undefeated season, had defensive issues in 2011. So look for razor-sharp general manager Ted Thompson to use the upcoming draft to try and remedy those problems.

Even with a star passer in Aaron Rodgers and an offense that was tops in the NFL, it's tough to win without a defense. Green Bay was third in total offense and last in the NFL in total defense.

The Packers have to improve that to the low teens at least. That's why this upcoming draft is so important.

QB: In Rodgers, the Packers have one of the NFL's best. He showed in 2011 that his 2010 season was the norm, which is why he was voted the league MVP. Rodgers excels at spreading the ball around and getting everybody involved. Rodgers is a given for the Packers. With Matt Flynn gone to Seattle in free agency, Graham Harrell is the No. 2. I would expect the Packers would try and get a veteran backup before the season.

RB: With Ryan Grant a free agent who might not be back, James Starks will have to do even more. Starks is a power runner who doesn't offer much in terms of the big play. Keep an eye on Brandon Saine. The Packers love his potential. He flashed some last season as a rookie. Alex Green has the quickness and potential to develop into a nice change-of-pace back.

WR: Greg Jennings is the best of a strong group. When Jennings missed time last season, the Packers offense wasn't the same. It is a unit that needs his ability to stretch the field. Jordy Nelson had his breakout season in 2011. He is a big, deceptively quick target who has developed a nice rapport with Rodgers. James Jones and veteran Donald Driver are the top backups, but keep an eye on Randall Cobb this year. He showed quickness last season in limited time and also as a return man. Cobb should be a bigger part of the offense this season.

TE: The Packers did the wise thing and re-signed free agent Jermichael Finley. He has the ability to be the next star tight end to emerge. But he was too inconsistent last season. Finley can run like a receiver and the Packers often split him out wide. Andrew Quarless, Tom Crabtree and D.J. Williams offer one of the deepest tight end groups in the NFL. They all fit the Packers style of offense.

OL: There will be a new center in 2012 since Scott Wells signed with the Rams. The Packers made a wise move and signed veteran Jeff Saturday, who was with the Colts for the past 12 seasons. Saturday is a smart, heady player who fits the Green Bay offense. The guards next to him will be Josh Sitton on the right side and T.J. Lang on the left side. They are a strong combination. Right tackle Bryan Bulaga really came on last season when he was on the field, but he missed time with injuries. The left tackle spot is still up in the air. Will Chad Clifton come back? Or will Marshall Newhouse start there? Clifton could be let go for cap reasons after starting just six games because of back problems. Second-year player Derek Sherrod is also in the mix. The top backup inside is Evan Dietrich-Smith, who can play guard and center.

DL: This is a unit that didn't play as well as expected in 2011. Nose tackle B.J. Raji emerged as a potential star down the stretch in 2010 and in the playoffs, but wasn't the same player last season. He was blocked way too much. Ryan Pickett was solid at his end spot, but the other spot didn't give much. Howard Green, who is a free agent, and Jarius Wynn saw time there. Wynn is penciled in as the starter now, but don't be surprised to see a high pick used on an end who can provide a pass rush. The Packers did agree to terms with Tony Hargrove, who has some pass-rush ability from the end spot. That's something this unit needs. Mike Neal, C.J. Wilson and Daniel Muir are some of the backups. The Packers need help here, but they also need Raji to play better.

LB: This unit really struggled in 2011. The coaches insisted that Clay Matthews was as good as he was in 2010, but I didn't see it that way. He was good, but he wasn't as dominant. He needs to be better rushing the passer. It would be nice if he had some help on the other side. Erik Walden is just OK. They need a better rusher from that spot. Desmond Bishop is nice player inside, but A.J. Hawk didn't play well at all. There is talk that D.J. Smith, who flashed when injuries put him in the lineup, might take over as the starter. Robert Francois and Brad Jones are other top reserves.

DB: The year the Packers won the Super Bowl, the secondary was sensational. But last season, the unit struggled as a whole. An early-season injury to Tramon Williams slowed him and he wasn't the dominant player he was in 2010. Charles Woodson is still a good player, but not like he once was. Sam Shields, who excelled as a nickel corner in 2010, was picked on a lot last season. Those three have to play better. The loss of Nick Collins with a neck injury in the second game really hurt the back end. Charlie Peprah and Morgan Burnett had their problems on the back end. There is a chance Collins can come back, but that's still unknown after the severity of the injury. Jarrett Bush is the top backup.

Clifton had a great career. I'm assuming he'll retire a Packer, and a darn good Packer at that. Doesn't get much better for a 44th overall pick than to start a position for over a decade. He will be missed.

Have been reading some reports suggesting Green Bay might bring back Ryan Grant. I would love to see this. I think he would be pretty cheap and is a nice veteran presence/depth move for them.

I wish they'd bring in some help at safety. Gotta be someone decent out there.
Harrison Smith in the first round would be a good fit.
Yeah he'd be great.....in the 2nd round.
He won't be around when you pick in the second round, he may not even be around when you pick in round 1.
I'm good with both of your options.

This is a weak safety class, which is why some teams may reach for the only two worth noting Mark Barron/Harrison Smith.

They won't go Safety in the first, I hope not till the 3rd at earliest, unless there is a great value pick in the 2nd. The only thing working against them, is that there is not much depth at that position in this draft.

I'm sure it won't fall this way, but I really hope they land Shea McClellin in the first if he's not there Andre Branch. Not sure who might fall in the 2nd, but someone like Jared Crick. I might be able to live with LaMichael James if he's there since he's such a weapon, but since we already have a ton I'd rather see them go to a position of more need. In the third I wouldn't mind them targeting someone like George Iloka for FS, drafting someone on the offensive line wouldn't hurt here either. Target maybe CB in the 4th. And so on...

UFA to target CB Derrius Brooks

I forgot to mention I really like Chandler Jones, just not sure where he fits, because I wouldn't take him over McClellin/Branch, and not sure he'll be there for us in the 2nd. Might be a better fit in the 4-3 anyways...

Hats off to a great career for Clifton.

I don't though feel LT is as dire as some.

Newhouse has a year under his belt and had some ok moments...and Sherrod at this point is on track to return as far as his recovery.

I still expect they use at least a 4th rounder on a tackle though.

And I agree that I like McClellin, Branch, or Worthy in the first...if they do go safety though and get Crick in the 2nd I would be happy with that.

Just think the first 3 are more impactful for this team.

I don't want James in the 2nd though...only if he fell further.

LinkSo, perhaps the other badger o lineman gets drafted by the pack in round 1? Or does TT just want teams to think that?

Crick is a DE, Peter Konz the Center? I think we are good at Center for another 2-3 seasons, but that could be pushing it. Konz would be a good pick but I doubt we pick him in the 1st and I don't think he'll be there for us in the 2nd...

All I know is I'm ready

Favre was livid. I spent the rest of the draft listening to Bus Cook, his agent, express Favre's anger, along with threats to not show up. I knew Favre had long dreamed of playing with Moss, but I told him that Greg Jennings would be a star in time. Favre said he didn't have time. I explained our method of drafting and developing players, but it only served to deepen his resentment of a general manager who did not welcome his input the way previous regimes had.
Wow. I hadn't seen this laid out this way before. Man, for everything that man did for the Packers organization...it has just gotten so hard to remember the good times. Nothing but bitterness has come out of this guy for years now.

Really? I remember this going down, and that's exactly what I remember. I believe this is about the time Favre demanded a trade, then went to the media and said he didn't. It also reaffirms my opinion that he walked all over Mike Sherman, which was pretty obvious.

Nick Collins was just released by GB. Maybe Harrison Smith is more of a reality now.
If he was not TT's guy before...doubt this changes anything with him.He is pretty set on drafting who his best guy is and this (which was pretty well speculated...eventhough I remained hopeful he could play again).Guessing the Packers knew for some time...could tell in the way McCarthy and Thompson have spoken about it.Sucks for them and for Collins that his career is over that quickly from a hit like that.

Tough decision for Ted and Co. It's sad to see a budding star's career cut short by a fluke hit. It will be interesting to see if he'll try to sign somewhere else and more importantly, if they'll clear him to play. If not, I bet he'd be a great media/marketing type guy for the Packers.

Why is TT announcing all these things before the draft?

Seems to me you would want to play these things close to the vest. Unless this is a misdirection play.

Am I correctly remembering that Collins got injured because Hawk flubbed a tackle? Maybe that was Tramon's injury. Or both. Anyway.

It sucks, but it's not crushing news after already not having him on the field for a year. Plus we get to watch a highlight of him running back a TD in a Super Bowl victory forever.

Just think the writing was already on the wall.I don't think it tips his hand at all...because it does not mean he will take one any earlier than he would have anyway.

Doesn't seem like a big need. Burnett looks pretty good, MD Jennings is a decent prospect, and Peprah is average. Get front 7 help.
Peprah was below average. But I agree that its not as big as some may thing...and not enough to use a 1st on Smith (the more I look at him, the more I don't like it...a bit too slow IMO).And while I say that about Peprah...so many things could be better back there if the pass rush was more consistent. So I agree to get front 7 help.

Sitton, Newhouse, Davon House, and Scott Wells were 4 of the last 6 guys selected using the compensatory picks?

And we have 4 of them this year, including two 4th rounders? Yowza! Looking good.

Also note that we'll be getting a 3rd round compensatory next year for Flynn signing that big contract ;o) Good stuff. I hope TT and McCarthy are around a long time. They know what they are doing. Develop, retain if possible otherwise let em go and get a great quantity of compensatory picks.

I don't think they will get a 3rd for Flynn next year.I think between his contract not being that big...and them signing Saturday and Hargrove...they will get a 4th at best.

Don't forget Scott Wells signed a pretty good contract with St. Louis. Higher than what Saturday signed, so that's a 7th rounder right there. So we signed Muir, Hargrove, Saturday and lost Flynn, Wells.Don't they think about the compensatory picks before signing people? After losing Flynn, Wells and signing Saturday they could basically bank a 3rd rounder coming next year. After signing those other two guys that seems very unlikely now.

What I read it was unlikely they would get a 3rd for what Flynn signed for anyway.

So what are we going to do tonight fellas?I predict TT either trades up or down, I'm leaning up.
I'm hoping for a trade up. 12 picks, or something like that. Will be hard to make room for them all anyway. Might as well bundle some picks and move up.

I think they have too many holes to fill on defense to trade up. I think if 3-4 of the players they want are available at their pick they trade down.
