*** 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers: one and done again. (1 Viewer)

From the Twitters:

"1st quarters of Steelers past 6 playoff games:
Opponents 73, Steelers 0

1st quarters of Steelers past 5 overall games:
Opponents 47, Steelers 3

Combined Qtr1 yardage deficit in the ongoing streaks:
Opponents: 1,017 Steelers: 231"

Good lord that yardage. :ROFLMAO: But sure, let's keep trying the same thing hoping for different results.

This team wasn’t going far with the QB and WR situations and a defense that can’t get off the field, no matter who was coaching.

That said, Tomlin needs to go and they should sign the cheapest veteran QB they can, trade Watt, Minkah and Pickens to stock up on draft picks.

Let 2025 be a rebuilding year and shoot for a high draft spot in 2026.

Of course none of this is going to happen

George Pickens on the Steelers offense: Yeah I’ve seen signs of growth for sure
Reporter: Does that make you optimistic going forward?
George Pickens: Nah.

Got no problem with him saying this and he should have been used more last night, was one of the few bright spots and they ignored him until midway into the third quarter.

I'd love to see TJ Watt win his first playoff game. With the current state of the Steelers the only way that will happen is when he's traded for a QB like JJ McCarthy.

Not sure Watt and Pickens have a ton of value. Watt looks washed and Pickens doesn’t seem trustworthy

Prior to his injury Watt was having a great season

Steelers feel like they are stuck in a cycle since Ben left. The roster has a lot of holes but a solid defense and Tomlin gets a 7-8 win team to 9-10 wins. They make the playoffs when they probably don't deserve it, then they lose in the first round to a superior team. They end up with the 20th pick which puts them in a bad situation to get a franchise QB. They fill some holes and runs the team back largely the same with the same results.
Theres some perception that Tomlin gets more out of the talent he has than most would. That's simply not true. He's like a RB who can get what's blocked but doesn't get anything more than that, and sometimes he gets let's because his teams show up flat for games they should win. Its been that way for a long time, not just recently.

Given the talent the Steelers HAVE had, even over the past few years, that's what he is. His shortcomings as a coach are painfully obvious to anyone who watches them.

The Steelers might be the least talented team in the NFL playoffs this season.
Yet they had the highest priced defense in the league, Tomlin is a defensive guy (effectively the D coordinator), they were mostly healthy all year on defense, and yet they were middle of the pack and couldn't stop any team with a semblance of an offense.

1. Keep Tomlin for now.
2. Keep Wilson, dump Fields.
3. Draft the best QB you can get in the first round. Maybe trade up to get Cam Ward.
4. Start the year with Wilson and plan on bringing in the new QB as soon as you can.
5. If the new QB doesn’t pan out, do the same thing the following year.

This isn’t rocket science. We’re not going to win until we have an elite QB in his prime. No other way to win in the modern NFL.

Who is the QB that you target given where they will be drafting? I ask that because I think it’s very unlikely that they hit on a franchise QB from that spot. So what’s the point?

So the Kenny Pickett strategy?

Just draft QBs in the first?

Sometimes there just aren't great QBs in the draft

The thing is you really don’t know if a QB is going to be great until they play on Sunday. You’ve got to take a chance. Get the highest rated one. Yeah I know it’s the Kenny Pickett strategy. But sometimes it works out.

You're right, it's not rocket science and you're completely wrong on all points.

Didn't Tomlin lose 4 playoff games in a row with a HOF QB before these last 2?
Marv Levy lost 4 Super Bowls in a row.
It would be nice to even get to one, or maybe even win a playoff game again.
How many SB victories does Tomlin have? I’ll bet an equal amount more than Levy and Bud Grant.
With a talent rich team and, according to Seahawks fans, a gift. Those were a long time ago. Even Coach noll with his 4 trophies was getting "pushed out" at the end of his run. Coach T has been there going on 20 years and he and the team need a reboot

He won 1 some 16 years ago.
If memory serves, Tomlin goes to the playoffs almost every year. That alone counts for something, doesn’t it? Like I said, be careful what you wish for.

It was 16 seasons ago, so I'm missing what the point was

I get it, I do.

Winning 9 or 10 games with playoff one and done's might be better than continuous losing seasons and no playoffs.

But if this franchise has had success with it's last 3 coaches, why fear with hiring the next one?

We can all be disappointed that the playoff debacles seems routine but no one can claim this team, or even the team over the last bunch of years since Ben was in steep decline, was a real contender.

I could be wrong here. Mike Tomlins playoff record is is 8-11.

Playoff wise he started out 5-2 and led them to 2 Superbowls. He's 3-9 in his last 12 post season games.

Becareful what I wish for. There's eventually going to be football justice for Steeler fans. He can't be the head coach forever.

That’s all true but here is the problem as I see it.

If we can agree it’s been a few years since the team was a real contender should it not stand to reason the goal over the last few years should have been working on building the team into one? Instead it feels farther away, not closer.

He won 5 playoff games with the core of a team that he inherited that was already a powerhouse and Super Bowl contender. They lost in the AFCC in 2004 and won the SB in 2005 before Ben's motorcycle accident in 2006. Enter Tomlin.

And since 2011, they've won a playoff game in only 2 of the past 14 years. They can thank Matt Moore and Alex Smith for wins in 2016 and AJ McCarron for the win in 2015. And during those 14 years, they had a good to great version of Ben in 9 of them, 2011 to 2018 and 2020. (he was hurt in 2019 and diminished in 2021).

I wouldn't call us spoiled brats. We just expect more from our team. Mike Tomlin just happens to be an overrated middling coach.

I don't recall going into the Eagles thread calling them names when they were taking Kenny's side over Tanner.

JohnnyU my dad would of loved to have had beers with you. His favorite QB was Johnny U. My grandfather for the longest time took him and my Uncle to Steeler games at Forbes field. He would always talk about the one who got away.

Lions, Browns, Texans, Jaguars feel your pain.

Being average is great!

You have to be better than average to always be a playoff team.

Yes, I agree. Setting the QB aside since it’s going to be near impossible for them to get a true stud, the most disappointing thing to me is that there hasn’t been much improvement anywhere else. The line still stinks and they have one of the worst WR rooms in the league.

I doubt replacing Tomlin fixes this.

Isn’t that a GM thing? “Khan Artist”? Khan!!! Khan!!!! Khan!!!!

How many teams make the playoffs? And how many teams are there? And how many of the low seeds are getting in by tie breakers, essentially the same record as 1 or more teams? If you "sneak in" as a low seed year after year you are average.

There's no immediate fix. But another poster has coined the term dino ball that the Steelers are stuck in the mud style of old school way. The successful teams have an offensive minded head coach who exploits the passing game.

Debatable in this case.

I think it can still work, but not with this team. You need a dominant defense, a great running game, and at least a threat of throwing the ball downfield. Believe it or not, the only thing this team has is the later and that guy is a head case.

Made it 4 of his first 5 years. Continued the success of Cowher's tenure.

Made it in 8 of the past 13, but 2 of those were as the 7 seed that didn't exist prior to 2020. Squeaking in because of a new format and facing the Bills and Chiefs on the road barely counts.

The playoff success he hasn't had since 2011 is well documented.

That might acceptable to some franchises. A step up. But it's lowered the standard in Pittsburgh.

The players have been terrible on offense in recent years. They've had no business even making the playoffs with a lot of these teams. Why is Tomlin getting blamed for this? I truly don't get it.

That's not being spoiled. It's not like Tomlin hasn't had talent or a good organization behind him like teams with lower standards. He repeats that mantra, "the standard is the standard" for a reason"

The Steelers having a higher standard than the Colts doesn't make Steelers fan spoiled lol
