2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (6 Viewers)

I have no idea how they’re ever going to get a chance to get Jedi or Scally a rest. Those guys are going to be cooked in the knockouts.
This is the game they should've been given a rest around the 70 minute mark. Shocked they're still in.
I am not that worried about Jedi. He is a minutes machine. He went a full 90 I think more than 40 times this past season for Fulham.

Should have been 4-0 but it is what it is. Three points and move on. Hope for better finishing against Panama and then the real test comes against Uruguay.

That was an excellent 2nd half. These guys are still going to get better for quite awhile as well, and should still be playing together almost entirely thru 2030 WC...

Jedi - 27
Luca - 26
CP - 25
Wes - 25
Adams - 25
Sargent - 24
Weah - 24
Balogun - 23
Dest - 23
Johnny - 22
Scally - 21
Reyna - 21
Musah - 21

They'll have to replace Ream and I'm not completely sold on Richards yet either, and we could use an upgrade at GK -- but that's a hell of a core to have together for another six years or so. If can add even ONE quality player each year for the next five. Love what we have going for this tournament and 2026.

I thought he played like he was exhausted against the Netherlands in the World Cup.

One thing is for sure in GGG system. He will not sub the back line. He'll make a change game to game but just won't pull the trigger in game. This was probably the best chance to do so and still didn't.

Win against Panama and we can rest whoever we want to. Not like we can avoid a top team in the Q-final either way (Colombia or Brazil), so might as well rest vs Uruguay if we don't need a result.

I wrote the following around 60 mins in, before the wheels fell off for Bolivia rendereimg anything the US did as moot.
......................

2-0 and I'm still as frustrated with them as ever.

Still so sloppy and every time Gio plays in the Mf, I don't like the shape defensively... He's not aware of the field, players and shape around him, Even if I love what he can do when he gets the ball.

And jeez.. let's have a game where you're not holding your breath when guys receive the ball or release it.

This is the biggest issue. Ream looks very old and slow but he can still play it out of the back. I have no faith in Richards. I dont think he made a good pass the whole game and had some very bad turnovers that would have killed us against top competition.

They won. Against an awful team. They imposed themselves. So bottom line, the two things I wanted, even if it was messy.

The good..
CP keeps playing like the guy who's a tier above anybody else on the field. Love seeing him continue his growth and find his confidence while also scoring the important goals.

Weah was frosty as hell and had that same- I'm better than you and I know it- vibe going all game. Great game from him.

Jedi... See Weah. If it wasn't for CP, my MOTM. Was just destroying guys, and not just with his pace- dribbling, passing, and running by the defence. And so many quality final balls. Great game.

The bad...
Gio didn't have a bad game, but I just don't like the shape the team keeps when he's in the MF with any defensive responsibilities.

CBs... Ream had some shakiness with his passing and decision making which seemed to get better as the game progressed and hopefully some rust sloughed off. Richards, not so much. This pairing is starting to worry me. Way too many genuinely bad giveaways that weren't punished because Bolivia are bad.

Scally too.

Swag... Like gio, not a bad game. But took until Bolivia was good and cooked in the 2md half for him to find his game, rather than imposing it while the game was still relatively in the balance. And it's been a few of these in a row where he's just not dictating things and seems passive. So he's not "bad" per se, just not to his best level that will be needed here.

it is not an easy situation for me. With no useful competition after the Copa for two full years, I want the best US team possible against the good teams while they are available, of which Uruguay is.

I acknowledge the result of the Uruguay game is (hopefully) meaningless given who is waiting in the quarter finals but I would hate to waste one of the very few games the US will have by playing a ton of subs.

Goal differential unlikely to matter right?

If things go as they SHOULD we would be meeting Uruguay in a match to decide whether we would play Brazil first or (hopefully) second.

Goal differential would then be known as to whether a tie or win is needed to win the group. If things go as they SHOULD.

I don't think it will make a difference who we play when. Colombia are peaking and Brazil has not looked themselves. The quality difference between the two teams is minimal (at least coming into the tournament)

Panama fully on the front foot here in the second half. Very unexpected given the Uruguay domination in the first half.
I like this panama team. They're flawed with some big gaps in talent, but the guys that can play.. can play. US will have to play MUCH better vs them.

And goal against run of play here.

Uruguay MF has had lots of holes that Panama have found but not exploited. The US hopefully finds them too and does better attacking their net.

If the second half Panama shows up against the US, they are going to be significantly better than Bolivia.

They just have to walk into the field to be better than Bolivia. That team had next to no talent, let alone cohesion.

Wasn't one of the best chances in the 2nd half out of a great long diagonal ball from Richards to Jedi?

Speaking of Jedi, remember when he was just a fast guy with a hilariously bad touch? What a player he has become. Is it a stretch to say he's the second best player on the team at this point?

He's gotten very good. He's possibly a top 3 LB in the EPL right now. Fulham supposedly want 40 million pounds for him.

Here's the thing re: Jedi... he's just matured IMO. And all those 21-24 year olds on the team? A bunch of them will do the same thing over the next few years. IIRC 26-29 is the peak for these guys in the modern age. The team is going to get a lot better, especially if we can add a few more key pieces.
