2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (1 Viewer)

Is there not some underqualified guy from Europe we could hire cheap since apparently we don't have money somehow?

I didn’t watch tonight.

I’m not spending a minute of time or a dime of money until Berhalter is gone.

This is beyond absurd to be completely wasting what should be our greatest generation of talent in history

Seriously. **** US Soccer.

Lol... Dumb hot take.
Sorry I was also referencing 2018 qualifying where they didn’t make the WC. That wasn’t humiliating at all. 👍
Dude
You were very clear with your dumb hot take. Don't backtrack.
Backtracking? Lmao not advancing in a home tournament where you are in a group with Panama and Bolivia is humiliating. Not qualifying in 2018 is humiliating. Spin it any way you want, this sucks.
This sucks. 2018 ****ing blew harder.

" Whatever tournament they're in" .... Is the hot take thats dumb. You want to change what you mean into these two tourneys... Ok. That's backtracking.
Cool man. They’ve occasionally not been humiliated. They’ve also never exceeded expectations. That’s great. Great stuff.

I said earlier in this thread that if they didn’t get out of group they need to fire Berhalter. They didn’t get out of group so he has to go.

I mean this in all seriousness, god bless you guys who live and die with this team because I don’t know how you do it. I parachute in every 18 months when they’re getting ready to be humiliated in whatever tournament they’re in and by the end of those 4 games I can’t stand it. Don’t know how you do it.

We basically posted the same thing. It's a tough watch. I'm grateful for European club soccer.

Welp. What’s done is done.

I have no idea if US Soccer will make changes.

I hope so, but if not we make do with what we have. But we also have some player decisions to make also in the next 18 months.

1994 wc. 2002 wc. Confed cup, gold cups vs mexico, 2014 wc... Etc etc.

And they disappoint as well.

It's not a team that's routinely out punching their ability, because their ability is about 10-35 best team in the world.

But you seem bent on the hot takes, so I'll back away and leave you them. I find them stupid.

Obviously its not ALL on Greg. Some of these guys have stagnated and others maybe just were never as good as we thought they were/could be. Missing Dest hurt. Weah's brain fart was a bad break. Greg didn't make Horvath play dodgeball on the last Panama goal.

But when a team CONSISTENTLY under-performs relative to their talent level (and based on where our guys play, that certainly seems to be the case) its the coach/system.

He's a wet mop of a coach who strives for bare minimum results. We saw it in the way he set up the team for away games in WCQ and nothing has changed.

The absolute best this group has ever looked offensively was when some guy named BJ who played at a D3 school was running things on a temporary basis.

But it wont matter.....because he's nice to the core players (who spoke up for him) and the cronies at US soccer are all friends with him and his brother.

Maybe it was just me, but I thought Ream had a very good second half. He is probably one of the few if only US players that did.

But we are in big trouble at CB. Ream is quickly aging out and Richards does not look the part.

Lalas isn't wrong... Dempsey agrees, just in less words.

I dont know the answer and USSF obviously doesn't either. If everything is the same as it was, make changes at the top.

Great to see this team show some grit, which most of us started wondering about, but way Too sloppy when quality was needed. Which has been a leitmotif for this team.

USMNT is like their child. They can criticize it but God forbid an occasional fan do it or there'll be hell to pay.
Hell to pay?

I'm calling him out for saying something dumb.

What did he say that warranted you calling his statement "dumb"? That they were "humiliated"? Just say you disagree....no need to call his statement "dumb".

He's not the only casual soccer fan who feels the way he does.

I thought Ream was a key player for us in this tournament- but I also don’t think we can expect him to play at this level in 2026. CB is an issue we need to address

Punching a player in the head and playing a man down for much of a match is humiliating.

One thing I will say though is, quit playing to not lose. If there IS another coach, please go for the knee....

GGG just seems like a coach that goes for 1-0 or the draw. If they do bring in another coach, please be someone that aims for 5-2, not 1-0.

Hey man I’ve talked to you for years on this board. Never called you dumb or stupid or even been a prick to you. Your behavior here is way more out of line than mine. I’m just giving my opinion. Last I checked we can still do that.

You left that part out of your quote.

Ignoring them ****ting the bed and not getting out of the group. They actually played Uruguay even - still not sure how that was a goal and we played well in the first half.

I got visibly angry in my crowd of just me when less than ten seconds after GGG was telling every one it was 1-1 in the other game, we gave up the goal.

It was like he broke everyone's concentration. No on field player needed to know the score of the other game that early in the second half.

Our center backs aren't very good. Our GKs are far off of average (and two of the three goals we surrendered in this tournament would have been easy saves for USMNT keepers for most of the previous 30 years). We don't have a #9 anywhere near Dempsey's quality. Let alone Pulisic's or McKennie's or Antonee's quality.

We're not good enough right now, and we're definitely not good enough to overcome an insane red card.

And God help me, but I think a surprisingly sincere and circumspect Lalas nailed it -- these are better soccer players, but not better USMNT players. Even our good players have to be better. It's been 10 years since we drew Portugal in the Brazilian jungle, Bradley and Jones practically dying on their feet in the heat, and 8 or 9 since we demolished our first three opponents in the COPA. Outside absolutely owning Mexico, which is looking less and less impressive, there's not enough to hang your hat on in the last decade. The performance against England was arguably top-10 all-time, but that's it.

Fire Berhalter -- even I don't even see how you avoid it now. Something has to give and you can't change the players. But it won't fix the problems above. Maybe we just have to hope they mature into a grittier team.

Just more of the same uninspired game. We’re so lacking in the final third it’s not even funny.

The bigger problem (which has been the problem all along) is against good teams (and Mexico isn’t a good team right now), we simply look like we’re never going to score. It’s great that we’re competitive, but the tactics just scream, I’m happy to lose 1-0 or 2-1.

Rob Stone is right - we were reduced to hoping Bolivia would get a result for us.

I thought that was harsh, and the "I watched more of Bolivia than I watched of us because I knew we couldn't do it" was obviously hyperbole by him.

We outplayed Uruguay for at least the 1st half. I wouldn't be surprised if our XG was higher than Uruguay's. Obviously a hugely disappointing result and Berhalter has to go but let's not pretend we watched the first 70 minutes of this game thinking we didn't have a good chance of winning.

Toe to toe, for sure... Even or betterfor the first 25 or so, but IMO the sloppiness set in after Balo left and it was URU who stepped up the class, if only by a little. Consistently won 2nd balls and finding the right touch when needed.

I missed that. If so, GGG is short a chromosome.

I would just say that immediately after a gut punch loss is not the best time for non-fans or casual occasional posters to be here posting these takes. I agree it’s a like the little brother thing - 365 day regulars can crap on this team right now but it grates when an every four year guy spouts off in this moment. It’s like I would never go into the Bears thread in the shark pool to crow right after they lose a big game, as fun as that may seem to be.

One thing that I thought was interesting is Berhalter flashed "1-1" to the players to signal to them that Boliva had scored, and of course we gave up a goal right after that. I'm not sure I've seen that kind of thing before. Usually a coach goes out of their way to NOT to let the players know what's going on in the other game with that much time left.

Actually, their xG was much higher. They out played the US badly in the second half.

xG was 1.4 to .56

Yeah, he almost creamed himself when he realized he could get through with a draw.

Bare Minimum Greg. It is who he is.

I'll go on the record. I like capella and gm a lot.

I don't like hyperbole or hot takes.
Alright I’ll back away. I’m just exhausted by this program. I was expecting more at some point. They are what they are.

And back at ya of course
This tourney was going to be their "look at us, we can play with the best in the world with our golden generation of players" coming out party.

And we got this instead. We only score 2 vs a horrible Bolivia. Weahs red card was awful and stupid. But shouldn't have kept them from getting a result. They came out fighting tonight, but showed they lacked the world class needed if they want to be thought of in that next tier of top teams.

Those of us that watch every single minute, have seen definite flashes of that ability, so it's frustrating seeing these kind of results.

I mentioned the identical thing above. It drove me crazy when he did it, especially with how much time was left.

Interesting as it didn't seem like they had many good chances at all. Though I guess maybe they did get 0.5xg off of that yellow card where they were allowed to keep playing and Ream saved it off the line. And another 0.5xg on the goal that shouldn't have counted for offsides where both should have been 0.0xg.
