2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (1 Viewer)

They mentioned that Columbia's only Copa win was in 2001 when Argentina didn't participate and Brazil send their B team. What was the circumstance there? Did the teams not used to care about this tournament?

At least the cameras aren't in the upper deck!

Maybe we can get a couple commentators from the upper deck though?

Actually I put on the Spanish language broadcast

It was a mess because no one felt safe playing in Colombia which at the time was even more dangerous than today. It was a total mess. Take a read on wiki, you will think the Copa this summer is the best organized tournament in comparison.

Looking at wiki, it doesn't say anything about Brazil's B team. It says they were knocked out in the quarterfinals.
Argentina:
Argentine players had received death threats from terrorist groups, the Argentine Football Association decided to withdraw from the competition

Brazil also had a Confederations Cup that summer. Argentina pulled out because of terrorist threats. It was hosted in Colombia

CONMEBOL is already pointing fingers.

CONMEBOL yesterday and today notified its CONCACAF peers and the Miami security authorities to reinforce controls. The response from both was that the controls were sufficient.

My kids turned 16 today (twins). My son, who has never played soccer before, has declared himself an expert tactician because “he rocks FIFA.” It’s obnoxious to watch the game with him, but since it’s his birthday, I’m zipping it and letting him have his moment. :)

FIFA needs to add a stadium security mode to the game

I imagine the rest of the world watching this is as bewildered as fans from other conferences were when they first watched a Big East game in the 80’s.

Games that go to PK's, the typical record keeping is that the game goes in the book as a draw and the team that wins the shoot out advances.

How does it work for a final? Is it still recorded as a draw?

Pretty sure it’s still a draw. I know the fifa calculation for rankings used to do it that way.

Probably won't matter now but I was wondering because of the undefeated steak.

And Argentina Flopperina begins. What was that, 3 guys acting like they got shot in the face in a 5 second span?

Euro final was so much more enjoyable. Just a so much better game the way they play it.

That’s a good question for that purpose.

Well.... There's a lot of work to do before 2026. I know it's FIFA and not COMNEBOL running it in 2 years, but there were a LOT of issues in this tourney. Hope FIFA and the stadiums work out the field/security systems for the World Cup because the US/Canada/Mexico need this to be a resounding success.

Congrats to Argie and Spain!
