2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (1 Viewer)

So who before the tournament had Phil Foden playing 622 minutes and racking up 0 goals and 0 assists?
felt like he had 5 legitimate goal chances in the last 2 games that just got saved or narrowly missed

i'm not up on who hates who but do futbol fans hate Foden and this is a zinger of some sort?

Neither hate nor a zinger.

He was a fantastic player for one of the best teams in the world this season. He was expected to have a big impact at the Euro’s.

not annoy the crap out of me or become hyper focused on a particular narrative
Totally agree.

People hate Twellman... Way more than I do. I feel like he can do a decent job pointing some things out when calling games, but it's the narrative thing he overdoes and often misses critical action in doing so.

I believe the color guys are actually "taught" to do this.

If you notice, many many times, their hyper focus is based on some "analysis" they throw up on the screen before the match and attribute to the color guy. I think the color guy then becomes burdened with proving his analysis correct by over focusing on items that support his pregame notes.

I dislike Twellman as a color guy. He, like LD, should be no where near calling a game. As an analyst post game, or on a call, he has actually shown better imo. I don't change the channel when he is calmly talking about a game that happened.

And I get it, its hard to describe you just saw accurately and quickly. I would get caught up in the game as well, but I also don't call myself a professional.

I actually thought they did pretty well last night. A couple times I wondered if their mics cut out because they were actually letting the game breath and not talking over every single second of it.

Also, could have just been Fox's ****e production lol

The commentary track seemed to get out of line with the action (social media going crazy with the "scripted" narrative because the voices called a shot on goal before the corner was taken that lead to the shot). Then it seemed like they were not talking at all, I figured the broadcast was having issues. Was nice not to have to here them. :lmao:

I think most everyone expected Foden to have a big tourney. However, I think most England fans are pretty pissed that Southgate never changed his attacking front 5 despite them not giving England the dangerous moments everyone expected. Foden had 0 goals, assists, and big chances created in 622 minutes. Cole Palmer had 1 goal, 1 assist, and 2 big chances created in 149 minutes. The fact that Foden still started the final over Palmer given those stats shows just how stubborn Southgate is and seems to be a big source of frustration for England fans from what I'm reading online.

I was trying to write this sentiment and it wasn't coming out right, so thanks.

Foden, Jude and Kane, all trying to occupy the same spot, really hindered their attack. SG not switching things up with Palmer, Gordon, Watkins or Toney more seems to be the issue.
Then SG complaining about no replacement for Phillips and not having a left back really drew some ire since he picked the team. He knew Shaw wasn't ready yet didn't bring another LB. At least he realized Mainoo was suited for the Phillips role, and was better at it.

I kept telling my friends and family during the Final that ENG needed to get Palmer on. After ESP scored, they should have made a change within 3-5 mins. Palmer was way more dangerous in his limited minutes.

In the end, I'm glad that Southgate was stubborn and couldn't adapt and that ENG lost.

my audio and video went out of sync in the first half. the audio was about 5-10 seconds ahead of the action. then there was a pregnant pause with no commentary, the audio/video differential came down to maybe 2-3 seconds.. then there was another pause a bit later that lasted a while longer and finally the audio/video came back in sync

i assumed the absence of commentary was the production team working on fixing the a/v issue

Right, we all had that delay issue but I'm specifically talking about the Strong and LD

Ok now I am getting confused. I thought LD was with Darke, not Strong.

I have been watching too many games :lmao:

I'm disappointed my Palmer image didn't rate.

Most likely you're right.

I think I got caught up reading all the LD hate in here. It was the dude who sounds like Foden looks

I imagine a British Gilbert Godfreid... Am I close?

That is Stuart Holden.

The pregnant pauses you heard were not them letting the game breath. They were still talking but the voice audio was cut out in the hopes to resync. You could tell they were still talking because when the voice audio came back, they were in mid sentence.

CONMEBOL’s official statement on the cluster **** last night was to place the entire blame on the Hard Rock stadium crew.

I just think they suck

I just saw a copy of the Miami stadium plan for WC 2026 and they already put in all the contingencies to handle fans with out tickets at various extended locations away from the stadium gates.

CONMEBOL simply could have used that plan instead of ignoring it entirely and blaming the Hard Rock stadium.

I'm waiting for the lawsuits. I'm guessing Hard Rock Stadium is gonna demand that CONMEBOL pay for all the damages and I'm betting CONMEBOL will be trying to get Hard Rock Stadium to pay for all the ticket refunds that will be issued. Could be a crazy fight.

Cancelled Fubo, subscribed to Peacock. Bring on the Olympics!

Weird choices of the overage players, but it's kind of cool to take role players rather than stars. Let the young guys take control.

Knowing that most of the Copa roster was very unlikely to be picked, whom would you have rather have seen over Zimm/Miles/ and Milhailovic?

I think Miles and Zimm were no brainers but I think there were many other players that could have been taken over Milhailovic.

The ironic thing about the young guys taking control is that the US main squad is still young enough that many of them were eligible to play in the Olympics (Reyna, Musah, Dest, Pepi, Balogun, Scally, Johnny, Tillman I believe were all age eligible).

With his contract expiring soon, I wonder if the FA gave him the heads up that they were not intending to re-sign him and give him the opportunity to leave on his own?

I don't think he will be unemployed long if he does not want to be.

Sounded like he was planning to step down regardless and the FA wanted him to stay. We may never know though.

Some discussion this morning around Eddie Howe and Graham Potter, with Potter even being mentioned for the USMNT

Stat of the day:

Rodri has lost 5 games across club and country since the beginning of January 2023
Rodri has won 8 trophies across club and country since the beginning of January 2023

Fox has the World Cup too?

Yes, they originally won the rights to 2018 and 2022, but through the corruption of the 2022 games and switching them from summer to winter Fox seemingly trading not suing FIFA about the change in exchange for the rights to 2026. Fox was awarded the rights to 2026 with out having to bid.

Well Fox probably won't be changing the formula for WC 2026 I assume

that's just Fox numbers. I was watching on Univision most of the time. I bet lots of other folks were too.

It would be fun if they had ratings for "people who watch no other Univision shows" broken out. The Lalas Avoidance Rating.

One has to wonder if we would never have had to deal with him if he didn't have the fake Bill Walton schtick back in the day.

I find this true in every sport. New color guys can be surprisingly insightful before the suits get their hooks in them. The exception is Meola. But he’s always like the color guy on the #4 team. And always the guy actually describing tactical changes. I think the suits stay away because his voice is so “non-television” that nobody bothers to invest in him.

I like how they brag about these big numbers. Put it on multiple outlets and if you have the highest number, good for you.
When the Super Bowl or World Series or World Cup Final or College Championship game are only shown by one network, of course your numbers are high ... you have a captive audience.

I can't speak for the other sports, but the big tournament soccer games are always split across English and Spanish channels here in the US.

For the Copa final, the Univision numbers were slightly higher than the Fox numbers.
