2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (1 Viewer)

I assume the US will put up a nil yet again.

The goal today is not a result, it is to keep the tournament favorite from a blow out. 0-0 is about the best we could expect at half.
And Paxs attempt was the closest either team got to scoring. Not like the US is sitting in a low block and afraid to move forward. I think this comment is more about ongoing angst about the USs Copa performance..
Care to revise this 😂. We suxor.
Lol

The seniors struggled to get anything close to net. It was grim. I liked what these guys did, forcing grat saves, hitting the post and just offsides....even if nothing went in.

Suxor against the Olympic favorites? No. But certainly will be if they can't score in the next two games.

The u20s have 13 goals in their last 2 matches, fwiw.

Really like Howard's technical commentary - especially with what the goalies are doing. He pointed some things out I never would have even thought of or considered.
I'm sure British media hate him because he's flat and lacks histrionics... But I agree. Some good color commentary.

I mean this in all seriousness, god bless you guys who live and die with this team because I don’t know how you do it.
Aren't you a fan of the Orlando Magic?
:lmao: :lmao:
lol this program would love to have the success of the mighty Orlando Magic.
it was just a great reply my man.

I mean France is rolling out Lacazette who is 33 and has played in the best leagues and scored loads of goals. We ran out McGuire from Orlando ( on topic)

We are/were generations behind the rest of the world.

yeah, it is really cringe worthy. You get people who don't follow the sport, don't follow the team, don't have any real knowledge, making pandering statements and don't even see the basic irony of the pandering based on the quality of the teams they support.
Lol you have no idea how much I or anybody else follow the team. I don’t have to make 10,000 posts on this board about them to know what’s going on. I follow along pretty well.

Also the Magic have had success. They have a promising future. The USMNT has neither.

I have a feeling Michael Olise is going to be one of the best if not the best players in the tournament.

Crystal Palace players have been all over this summer's tournaments.

We all know this is not the main team.
Then if you know that why are you making pandering comments about people who follow the main team?

Don't you understand how it sounds to ask how fans can stand to follow a team that is not a great team? I mean the vast majority of the sporting fan base follows teams that are not great. There would be no sports if only teams that were great had fans.

Do you really struggle when their G league affiliate loses?
I get it. Everything can just be excused away with this program.
What's being excused away?
“It’s their G league team” as if this is France’s national team. We all know this is not the main team.
France had 5 players in the national team that would still be eligible for the Olympics. .. it could be worse.

Don’t even get me started on Spain lol

1. I deleted my comment shortly, probably 2 minutes after I made it - you’re the one carrying on about it.

2. Yes I understand but clearly my comment comes from a place of frustration as somebody watching as well. I gave up hope after 2018 on whatever cow field it was they lost their World Cup bid on.

Most countries have that (players on national team that could have played in the Olympics). Certainly not the Spanish or French quality though. The depth in those countries is endless.

Even the US had Dest, Musah, Reyna, Scally, Pepi, Tillman, Balogun and a few others that were age eligible for the Olympics.

I should have been more clear, not just age but advance quality. They’re too good to play down, not just young enough

Spain is going to be running out a core of players for a decade that is going to make other teams **** themselves.

Gavi, Pedri, Williams and Yamal are not even close to the finished products yet.

There French guys like Olise that have big teams fighting over to sign. We had big Dunc (tbf... Some interest from championship teams iirc)

The second game for the US is so massive for advancement.

If France beat Guinea as expected, Guinea will be eliminated.
If the US can get a win of any sort against NZ, they will be equal on points with NZ and go into the last game facing the already eliminated Guinea and NZ will then get to deal with France (whom even if they rotate are still going to put a good team on the field)

I gave up hope after 2018
Lol... Maybe not ALL hope
I still follow and watch! Just don’t expect a thing.
😀 Sounds like you do... Otherwise you wouldn't be frustrated?

For me, I just hope for progress on the field. Years past... Maybe the result is the same, but the game would have played out differently with the US in Bunker Hill behind a parked Greyhound. Today they went toe to toe against a loaded team, created a bunch of great chances, and the score line flattered the Olympic favorites. 3-0 sucks, but tbh I kind of expected a blowout AND a US team only playing defense.

I don't mean to dump on Dunc. He worked his butt off today but he is what he is technically.

I think he will find some success abroad but it will take some unexpected development to make a dent in the national team.

Of more concern to fans would be is this the best striker in this age group? Luckily, Pepi and Balogun are actually younger than Dunc and Sargent is just a few months older. Not that any of them are game breakers (although I am still holding out some hope for Balogun).

Bayern bought Michael Olise for €65M this summer and rumors are that they've offered €55M for Desire Doue too.

Our entire Olympic team wouldn't cost as much as those two right now.

Dumc feels like an old school US forward who works hard, gets smartly in the box, uses every ounce of his physicality and scores goals. I'm thinking of guys like Ching, not Deuce.

Of all the Olympians, it feels like Tessman may have the best chance to make the jump to the national team before the WC.

With Adams perennially hurt and Johnny not yet being able to recreate his club form internationally, a good Serie A season for Tessman could see him get included by the new coach.

I am not sure I see anyone else on the roster (ignoring Miles) who may make the leap in the short term. Although I doubt there is too much of a gap between Tolkin and Lund.

Ching is a great comp. Even the immortal Conor Casey.

I wish we could develop a McBride 2.0 but that has not yet emerged..........

Casey is a better comp. Direct player good at those straight ahead runs, strong and smart in the box. I hesitate to use the word, but Ching had a little more nuance to his game I think.

Is Booth on this team?

I guess agree about Tessman, even though he's been far off the level when he's played for the seniors so far. Hopefully serie A gives him that boost.

And funny.. was thinking of how little the French and English teams scored at Euros- must've been nice for the French fans to finally see some goals.

yes. Booth subbed in during the second half (number 10, played on the right wing).

Booth may have a chance to unseat Aaronson but another of the "can he stay healthy" guys. This is why I like Tessman's chances. He is a minutes machine (which is the path Jedi took to raise his game from good to very good).

was there a long injury in the Argie Morocco game?

Argie just leveled the game............................in the 107th minute (injury time)................
oh my god what a crazy goal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i need more of this Moroccan fella calling matches

I would also not be surprised if a new coach made a move to a double pivot which creates space for more defensive midfielders.

Shaq Moore was on our Copa America roster, because Dest was out. Lots of guys are an injury or two away. Many of the guys on this team have already played at a higher level than Shaq Moore, even without ignoring that they have two more years to improve before the WC.

Even ignoring that, there are some opportunities...
  • Our 2nd goalie spot isn't exactly nailed down, and a strong wind could change who our 3rd goalie could be.
  • We had Tim Tillman on our Copa Roster WITHOUT any injury causing his inclusion. Paredes and Booth are already far superior players who probably should have been included ahead of him.
  • We only have one strong sub on the senior team between the two outside back spots.
  • There could even be a path back to the senior team for Zimmerman. Without Ream, we're looking pretty weak at center back.

I am not that knowledgeable about the USWNT but in looking at the roster, some things jump out.

Swanson back and Rose fully healthy should make an enormous difference to the team compared to the WC, as will Rodman and Smith being more seasoned.

I can't speak to how the new coach will effect the team but people with way more knowledge than me think she may be the best coach in the world.

With England not even qualifying, the US could be set up for a very deep run with only 12 teams in the tournament.

I agree but keep in mind that I am expecting that the WC roster size will be 23. Copa (with Tim Tillman) was at 27 before Tillman was cut (he did not make the final roster, which was 26).

If they lose those extra roster spots, every one will be squeezed, and that may be for the better as most people seem to agree the main roster has become too comfortable with their knowledge that they will make every roster.

If they stay at 26 (which I hope they do) then that opens up more options for players to break in and for a coach to have choices.

Good point...I forgot about that!

I have yet to see any explanation or even commentary about that Arg game having 15 (19!) extra minutes.

Reporting just discussing Arg getting a last minute goal to tie it up and the ultimate VAR/2 hour delay due to pitch invasion... Not how/why there so many extra minutes.

Herc had a piece on it but he appeared to be in full "Steven A Smith" mode so I did not watch it.

Only thing I found just now... Not sure of it's veracity...

The explanation lies in a new VAR test that is being implemented in the tournament. This test uses a timer to count time lost due to interruptions in the game, with the aim of ensuring a greater net playing time.

That doesn't explain why the 1st half had only 2 minutes, or why the other games didn't have anywhere near that amount.

Somewhat related to Argentina being given 19 minutes of extra time to tie the game up...has there EVER been a game (either club or international) where the horrible call/controversial decision favored the substantially "smaller" team? I mean...it must happen occasionally, but feels like 98% of the time the sketchy ref decision favor the bigger name club or country, making it seem even more like it's actual corruption, not just incompetence.
