2024 Year-End Song Draft - 280 songs of the year (1 Viewer)

9. Chasing an Empty Dream - Cymande

I think I heard the old stuff from this 70s funk soul band out at a bar or coffee shop or something for the first time last year, then started digging in a bit more and found that they have been sampled a lot in hip hop songs. Then suddenly they put out their first song in like 50 years in October and the full album is dropping soon
Well that's a band I NEVER would have thought would appear on one of these lists. I happen to LOVE their song, "Dove". This is one of those songs/artists I never would have discovered prior to digital music and algorithms. I went through a phase of digesting lyricless, instrumental music and this song bubbled up a few times and it really grabbed me. I think it would be an outstanding song for some Tarantino-like movie director to create an 11 minute "oner" (one continuous take with no cuts or edits). I was surprised to discover precisely how old it was ('72).
When the mood is right, I'll throw it up on the jukebox when sitting at a bar engaging in some day drinking and conversation. People always ask me about it. I've only ever had ONE time where I started playing it and someone asked aloud, "who's playing Cymande?!?". We were both surprised to find someone else who knew about this tune. Exactly how I feld reading your post.
Looking forward to hearing their new stuff. Thanks for the pick.

Didn't sleep last night watching fire coverage approach my sister's place. Been kinda distracted. I owe two.

9. The Marias - No One Noticed

Chill but I have an awkward old man crush on her. They're delightful live. Go see 'em if you can.

10. Suki Waterhouse - Faded

Also chill but I like it better than the big hit the other Suki drafter also avoided.

G'nite. Wake me for the game.

10. Jake Bugg - Keep on Moving

Delicious combo of retro 60's Mersey Beat, 70's Power Pop, and a dash of Motown.

Haven't listened to Jake since his first two albums. Saw him when he was getting started as an opener for The Black Keys.

1. As If Waltz — Geordie Greep

Warning before you listen: The lyrics are a little weird. A theme of this album is desperation and the character in this song is desperate for a prostitute in a brothel to love him back. As the listener, Geordie wants you to be a little repulsed but also have some pity for the character. It's also supposed to be funny. All these emotions really add to the enjoyment of the song for me.

Sorry, not sorry for the length of this song. I hope you don't check out before the killer outro! 👨‍🍳 💋

Some of you may recall me picking the band black midi in MAD 2. Greep was the frontman for that band and wrote about "80%" of their music on their three albums. I knew he'd eventually end the band to do his own thing creatively but I didn't know it would be so soon. He is my favorite artist of this generation and, at 25 years old, I feel like he's just getting started!

Jumping in at the beginning of the playlist. Hit this one and thought huh? Definitely not a track i was expecting but I appreciate how everyone's musical itch can be scratched uniquely.

Not going to comment on every song but will here and there.

1. Alone - The Cure

I was intrigued when I heard a new Cure album was coming out. This is a band I don't think I appreciated enough when they were in their prime. Knew the radio hits but never listened beyond that. I think I listened to this album maybe two times through when it came out. Need to listen to it more but my immediate reaction is a dislike of their extremely long intro to this song. If I remember right other tracks followed a similar course? I like the music including Robert Smith's voice but the repetitive drawn outness of the intro ruins it for me somehow. Probably need to give it a few more rotations before I pass final judgment.

10. MJ Lenderman - She's Leaving You

My streaming app tells me this was my most played song of 2024. Didn't discover it on my own, I culled it from the mid-year list. I would have made sure this song was on this playlist. Good pick!

Also my fave from this album. This album I discovered on my own. Good pick.

Long intros are somewhat of a Cure staple. They are used heavily on this album and others including Disintegration which is often considered their best album. Cure fans feel they help create and sustain a mood. I remember, as a much younger man, appreciating Robert Smith’s patience in songwriting. He showed me music doesn’t have to be rushed!

To each their own though. I know that a lot of people feel the same as you about them.

An epic David solo in 2024. Cool. And Mrs. G channeled Roger a bit here with the lyrics. We're old. The song makes it clear. But I'm just in for the solo.

11. David Gilmour - Scattered

11. Conan Gray - Alley Rose

🎶 Don't leave me hangin' alone again
Don't leave me hangin' alone again
Oh, where'd you go, go, Alley Rose?
Oh, where'd you go, go, go?🎶

Conan Gray brought back the 70's/80's Power Ballad

If you gave ChatGPT the input... Chump white guys copying beastie boys, it would spit this out. And tbh, I genuinely like them. The entire album is basically this, for better or worse.

10. Like a Punk- Joey Valence & Brae

I left Spotify on autoplay yesterday after listening to one your picks yesterday and heard a song new to me that was just outstanding. Tapped the title to see if it was 2024. It was. I was driving and exhausted and committed the artist's name to memory. My memory. I lost it. haha

So I told AI everything I remembered. Wore out my free prompts without it guessing right. We both seemed pretty frustrated. :)

Spotify doesn't have some type of History feature that'll show you the most recent songs played?

On the desktop app, "recently played" is on a tab under "queue"

On the mobile app, you have to click your profile picture and select "recents". This is for Android, I don't know about iPhone.
