After looking at a bunch of submissions from folks, I've got a question - at what point are the cheap options useless?

My question above is legit. We started a decent discussion about it. If a scrub $2 or $3 option scores 6 points each week, are they worth it, or just a waste of money and a roster spot?

I’m with you on this one. Sure it’s injury insurance but I’d rather pay for a handcuff for my starter that will actually put up very good numbers if the starter goes down (Mason, Charbs) but then I don’t want to spend that much $$$ on that combo of RBs in the first place.

So I end up usually with 5 starters at RB and spend money elsewhere.

ETa: sorry I focused on RBs when that wasn’t specifically your question. It’s just that I was LITERALLY messing with my line up, trading in a $11 RB for a couple of cheaper RBs…and switched it back immediately. so I had RBs in the brain.

To answer your question with WRs in mind, I imagine that’s where most of us go bargain hunting. Seems much easier/more likely for a random $3 WR to have a great week, or move from #4 WR to #3 WR on his team, and in best ball format it seems like the place to make some cheap bets

One of the suggestions was a RB who gets 1 carry for 1 yard and a TD every single week. He leads the league in TD's and is useless in this contest. Your scrubs need the capability to have some monster weeks, or become starters. If not, what good is a guy who is your 3rd highest flex every week?

Honestly, in prior years there was always a really good 2 or 3 dollar option at rb who was already a starter and everyone had him.

Other than that, it’s a lottery ticket and lotto tickets are almost always a waste of money.

For a cheap rb handcuff, I either want a goal line specialist on a good offense or a pass catcher. That way they have a shot at having a playable week even if their starter doesn’t go down.

If you need to get 6 3 dollar options to hit one, is it really better than having 1 18 dollar guy? Especially if the upside is the 18 dollar guy? You’d have to hit multiple guys which seems low odds given how much of a long shot those cheap guys are.

For wide receivers, I think passing games are so random that you always have no names week 1 who blow up and become a false positive. They are great for best ball so I really like 2 or 3 dollar guys cause the third or fourth wide receivers on teams can boost big games in any given week.

I’ve had this grouping of WRs for a while now and I think only a major injury or other major news will move me off of them:

WR - Courtland Sutton - DEN/12 - $19
WR - Mike Evans - TB/9 - $18
WR - Jakobi Meyers - LV/8 - $16
WR - Matthew Golden - GB/5 - $12
WR - Joshua Palmer - BUF/7 - $7
WR - Keenan Allen - LAC/12 - $5

I guess some folks who don’t believe in Golden would say he’s the first one to swap out, but I like him.

I am getting fonder for Golden as the days pass by. Reed was recently spotted in a walking boot, and Golden could be GB's WR1 for a mere $12. Love or hate this FF doctor, here's a video...

With Allen I would question if you have confidence in FBG projections because for one dollar more there are at least 3 options for WRs 3-5 years younger with buy weeks earlier in the year on teams that rely more on the passing game. For two dollars more there's at least one wr projected to crush Allen's numbers. But Allen is the sexy brand (I've always admired his game) so have at it.

this is a quality group. at the moment I only have Evans pencilled in but I think Sutton is a clear discount. there's an argument to be made that staff is undervaluing Palmer.

Agree. I think picking one in that range is fine but I don’t think taking a bunch of them is a good strategy since there are many “cheap” & much better options in the $5-$7 range. Would I take 1 of those vs 2-3 of the super cheap guys. Yeah, likely.

I like a bunch of the $18-20 guys. Of course a few share bye weeks, but I like the combinations I’m getting from have 3 from that grouping.

Courtesy of @Army Eye here is an awesome tool to track your team for the duration of the contest. Simply input your 6 digit team number and enjoy! I have no idea if Army Eye will be doing this for 2025, but the link still works for last year's contest. If you forgot your number, you can track it down using last year's Contest Entry Form page.

The plan is to bring everything back for 2025! Preparations are being made :sneaky:

Agreed. Not much of any value to be found at $2-$3. I do find them to be a waste of money and a roster spot. On the other hand, there is quite a bit of value to be had in $5-$8 value range.

Whichever $2 player scores 6.1 points every week is definitely a viable player. Over the years, I always read posts that state, amazingly I advanced and with one or two zero scores, so they would definitely provide injury and ineptitude insurance.

But, reality is nobody scores the same every week. With WRs and especially depth low cost ones, they may post twelve or more weeks under five points. But, then they also have 2 catches for 60 yds and a score giving you a 14 point week that could allow you to advance.

I haven't done a decent breakdown of an entry yet, so decided to start with yours. I suck at this contest, so FWIW, take everything I say with a grain of sand.

QB - Lots of us are drooling over Tua because of his cost vs ceiling. I know I am. My main concern, I am torn between 2 or 3 QB's, but if you roster Tua, 3 becomes almost a requirement. If you are a 3QB type of person, he's a great addition. Goff is undervalued, and I think it has alot to do with the perception that you now have to be a running QB to score lots of points. That's true in some scoring systems, but not for this contest. Last year he was QB6, and that was with only 50 yards rushing and 0 TD's. Stroud is a comeback candidate after the sophomore slump. Doesn't offer alot with his legs, so he needs good passing yardage and TD's to compete as a QB1. Overall a nice trio, but I prefer to stay about $36 max at the QB position, not that you're much above that.

RB - That's alot of firepower in your top 3 dogs! Actually, the $80 invested in those 3 is probably what I'm looking to spend on the position. I think the 2 weekly flex scores are cheaper at the WR/TE positions. But you still have to have 2 usable RB scores every week, so I kinda like a trio/quad you are happy with. Then sprinkle in a couple cheapies of your choice.

WR - I like the WR's individually, but you went light at the position better points per dollar than RB or TE IMO. I would find a way to shuffle some $$ from RB over to WR. But remember what I said - I suck at this contest!

TE - Kelce is very tempting, and could pay dividends if Rice is missing a large chunk of the back half of the year. People think he fell off the cliff already, but he finished as TE5 with 97 catches. Only the 2 $30 options for this year had more. Otton was a nice surprise last year, and despite what some say, 4 of his first 7 games were in double digits while Evans and Godwin were both healthy.

K/D - Not much to say, just pick a few cheap ones you like.

Best of luck this year!

I just want to try a thought exercise with you, if you are willing. I am going to provide projections, and you adjust them as you see fit.

Mason = 150 carries, 700 yards, 5 TD's rushing, and 15 catches, 100 yards, 1 TD receiving
Pearsall = 5 carries, 30 yards, 0 TD's rushing, and 70 catches, 900 yards, 5 TD's receiving
Goedert = 60 catches, 650 yards, 4 receiving TD's

RB - Jordan Mason - MIN/6 - $11

If he can play for 15 games, then he's dangerous and a great value. Though, how many games will you get from him?

RB - Jordan Mason - MIN/6 - $11
WR - Ricky Pearsall - SF/14 - $11
TE - Dallas Goedert - PHI/9 - $11
I just want to try a thought exercise with you, if you are willing. I am going to provide projections, and you adjust them as you see fit.

Mason = 150 carries, 700 yards, 5 TD's rushing, and 15 catches, 100 yards, 1 TD receiving
Pearsall = 5 carries, 30 yards, 0 TD's rushing, and 70 catches, 900 yards, 5 TD's receiving
Goedert = 60 catches, 650 yards, 4 receiving TD's
Looks about right to me. Curious where you are going with this as I have two of these players. :oldunsure:

I just wanted someone to either correct my numbers or say they were fairly accurate. Since you said they were fairly accurate, I can move on to my point. Using the numbers above:

Mason - 123.5 contest points
Pearsall - 193.0 contest points
Goedert - 179.0 contest points

I chose those 3 from @scottybo roster to show just how lopsided the points per dollars are. They are all $11 each, and I think many folks consider them all decent contest options. But, I will be doing my best to get my flex scores from WR's and TE's.

This was a minimal effort. I didn't put much time in it. Actually didn't realize I did 4 QBs until I had posted it.

what if I said you get WR / TE bench for floor and "bestball" upside (i.e. flex), and you get RB bench for lottery tickets? more generally, does the ideal roster spend zero on lottery tickets?

I think that Mason will be heavily used at the goal line. Jones was not successful at scoring tds last year. Mason could have double digit tds.

I think your lotto tickets have a better chance of paying out when they are WR's versus RB's.

That would be awesome for Mason, and money well spent. The lowest any RB finished last year in this contest with double digit TD's was RB18.

Folks - @Army Eye website is amazing. For anyone following their team throughout the contest, you can quickly see how your team is doing every week. I assume @Army Eye will provide a donation link on his site, so give generously!
