I wish I could get into this more. I like the vibe and the attitude. At least it's better than the pop-type country that I usually hear.
Does Alt. Country = Texas Country? Do people generally like this and mainstream country as well?
Anything in a more rockabilly style or is that a different genre all together.

Awesome. I envy you guys. Being able to get together with friends for jam sessions is one thing (and fun by itself), but to be able to play venues like that would be awesome.bigbottom said:

It is the "Superbowl of Swine"... the World Championship of BBQ Cooking contest held on a 1 mile stretch RIGHT along the banks of the Mississippi river in Memphis TN. Teams from all around the world come in to compete. Somewhat unique to this event is it is the "mardis gras" of the BBQ Circuit, with each team's booth being a private party with open bar, free food... some booths (like ours) going 2 or 3 stories tall (scaffold).
Our booth is endless kegs of lagunitas beer, fully stocked bar by beam suntoury, literally thousands of pounds of ribs, shoulder, wings, beans, slaw, jambalaya, etc... Live DJs at night with $75,000 light and sound system that will rival many clubs.... live music from the best local musicans fresh off appearances on The Voice or American Idol.... cornhole... a custom driving range with endless range balls to hit at passing barges on the mississippi.... this lasts for 3-4 days and culminates in one of the most competitive cooking competitions in the nation.
Oh, and there are hundreds of teams doing this (though not all on the scale)... all the booths are packed in line sardines with tens of thousands of people on walkways weaving through the makeshift structures and smoking pits like the streets of calcutta.
And if you're a guest of a team (like the one Myself and @sbonomo are on, or the one next door that @Tusken Raider runs) then everything is free... food, booze, etc.
It's pretty much heaven for a certain type of person.... if you're that type of person then you should add it to the bucket list. You're MORE than welcome at our place.

Rockabilly is a different Genre and you're into that you HAVE to check out Hillbilly Casino out of Nashville, TN. Think social distortion and johnny cash got together in nashville with an irreverent, extremely high energy, raw, rockabilly style. Their shows are absolutely legendary. You might recognize their bassist, Geoff Firebaugh, from BR549.

He is a consummate professional and puts on a fantastic live show, but I'll go ahead and be that guy and say I miss the cocaine and whiskey fueled Isbell from the Truckers days. Cigarette dangling out of his mouth as he casually walks to the front of the stage and peels off a blistering intro to Zip City that makes the hair on your neck stand up is the way I like to think of him. His high harmonies were fantastic, too. Let There Be Rock, Heathens (she ain't revved til the rods are throoooooooooooown), ZC, all those great harmonies. Reminds me of Jerry belting out harmonies behind Weir at just the right turn of phrase. Tasteful and wicked with all the punch of a horn section blowing the walls out. Love the guy. He is the real deal, even if I find some of his solo stuff a bit pandering.

Love how you got the word Texas in the title. Man I hate people from Texas. Between Texas and Boston, I'm not sure who is more annoying about letting you know where they are from. These two places are the Crossfit Vegans of the United States. New York city too. Like we are supposed to care.

Ugh, at the risk of peppering this thread with shameless "look at me" posts, I recorded a live cover of this song alone in a room one evening four months after Chance passed away. It is the closest I've come to being able to incorporate anything even remotely related to his battle into a performance. It's just too hard.

Like it or not, "Texas Country" is an actual term that refers to a sub-type of country music (and not necessarily the origin of the artists). Much different than "Bro-Country."

Texas country is a established genre, differing it from Nashville or bluegrass in many ways. Not all artists I call texas country. I mean I would consider the Jayhawks the most mainstream act that I would potentially put in the Texas country genre and they are based out of KC and Seattle I think.

It seems both Isbell and the Truckers were able to move forward and have success, not something I would have bet a dollar on at the time, but good for them. I'll always catch them whenever they're in town. If only I could figure out what Shonna's doing these days ...

Rhett played a small venue last time he was in MIlwaukee, and is coming back in February at an even smaller place. Great for fans, but I hope he's doing alright. Its been a few years since he had the band together as far as I know. Some of my friends know him pretty well, so we always get tickets and usually get to hang out in the back after the show. He's a great guy, fun to hang with.

Ryan Adams' early band, Whiskeytown, did some fantastic stuff in mid-late 90s.
"Stranger's Almanac" is a near-perfect album for me. It's one of those rare, start-to-finish albums where I typically don't skip a track. Great to turn on when I'm enjoying a glass of bourbon by the fire, or flying solo down the highway for a long stretch.

Country is definitely not my world... but I went through a period where I kinda liked some cow-punky outfits like the mekons, but especially the SF band Dieselhed (mid 90s).

I used to live a few blocks from the guy but never really saw him much. I assumed he was touring. The few times I did see him out and about he was always great. I haven't ever bothered to figure out with him and the 97s.

Came across this group as one of the acts at Mumford & Sons Gentlemen of the Road tour 2 years ago. Really fun group, had a "what if Joan Jett were country" vibe.
That same night John Fogerty was flown in to sub for the band fun. who cancelled last minute. The old man proceeded to rock the ever living #### out of an hour+ set. Followed by a 2 hour set by Mumford, my most favorite concert ever

Just youtube some of the bands posted here. The styles vary widely. Which is why I'm not a big fan of labels for types of music. I would typically say that I hate "mainstream country" but some of the stuff posted in here definitely sounds like "country" and I don't mind it.jamny said:

just want to this thread for all of the suggestions. Sturgill Simpson, is currently one of my favorites right now. My all time favorite, who, i think is one of the "Mt. Rushmore" artists is Waylon Jennings. I do think that Jerry Jeff Walker should be mentioned as well. Steve Goodman and Ray Wylie Hubbard are some others.

Always a phenomonal show... although I do prefer the "Lucero Family Picnic" every spring given it's outdoors and has a great local festival vibe.

Wife loved Jason Isbell. She cried during the emotional songs. Elephant and Cover Me Up. Seriously.
When I bought the tickets, the lady at the venue told me it was a solo show. I was thrilled when The 400 Unit and Amanda Shires showed up.
Isbell is absolutely on fire with these last two albums. Fantastic stuff.

Robert Earl Keen has a bunch of really great songs.......
I am going to see him do his annual Christmas show this year at the Ryman. What a blast that show is. Last year I saw it in Midland TX and the year before @ Austin City Limits. It is now part of our annual Christmas festivities.
