Car Market going forward (5 Viewers)

Well we finally got the dream car. Ever since 1990…..I have wanted a Nissan Z

I bought a new 2024 Z Performance trim.

Gun Metal on Charcoal interior…9 speed automatic with paddle shifters. All the bells and whistles.

400 HP Twin Turbo engine….this baby flies.

I have been a loyal Maxima Driver since 1990. That’s all I have been driving since I am 19 years old.

My current 2018 Maxima SR has 68K and is mint. I surprised my soon to be 20 year old son and told him I am giving him the car. He has always loved it. Pearl white with the midnight package. Still has 2 years and 32K left on the warranty too.

Man this Z is something else. A beautiful touring sports car and what a value for the price. It looks like a 65-70K sports car and I was able to get 7K knocked off the 56K MSRP. I then slapped a 8 year 125K warranty on it. This will be a garage kept vehicle for me. No doubt.

It was now or never. So we said **** it we only live once. Very happy.
I am thinking about getting rid of my 75 for the new one.

Your 1975 what? Datsun? I’m interested !

I don't really get why they are failing. I see a ton on the road but projected to go bankrupt and potentially cease operation in 2025
So I am reading about their troubles. I think they can pull themselves out of this. But it’s quite crazy how mismanaged they are.

Most likely they will be bought by another auto company. But they need a new anchor investor.

Their US sales are actually very strong…..it’s China EV’s worldwide outside of the US that is killing them.

This is definitely something to watch in 2025.
Nissan is not in great shape in the US. They are down 2% retail, only behind Stellantis (13%). Industry is up about 4% retail. Hyundai/Kia is selling 2x the volume. They are up about 20% in rental volume, but margins are compressed and it will hurt long term residual and brand value. Their Infiniti brand is considering letting the dealers dual their facilities - there is not enough throughput to justify (I think it was around 27 new per dealer per month). We will see if the Honda rumors pan out - the brand and the dealer network will bring value to someone.

Yeah…..I am a huge Nissan loyalist. I mean the Maxima had served me so well for 35 years. And my wife has been driving Muranos since their inception. We just leased a 2024 SL for 18 months to bridge us to the new redesigned 2025 (by then 2026). If they make it…..I hope they do. They make good cars and they are a value with quality.

Nissan is awesome! IMO they are the best bargain vehicles you can buy. Nearly as reliable as Honda and Toyota but just not the same quality- however they’re 2/3 the price.

That’s been my experience with them in past.

Today? I think all cars peaked about 10 years ago and everything has been downhill since.

congrats man - I'm like you in that I still drive a '13 Avalon that's in great shape and only 62K miles on it ...love how it drives and just can't justify to myself splurging on something really cool though I know it's gonna be fun

Congrats! My second car was a 73 240z. Loved that car. Have fun

Honda considering a merger with Nissan and Mitsubishi

It'll be interesting to see how that goes. Nissan is apparently having some big financial troubles.
IMO it will happen. Nissan has much better EV tech than Honda and Honda has great hybrid tech that has eluded Nissan.

This is a life raft being given to Nissan by Honda. But a smart strategic move for Honda.

Honda sees an opportunity to reel in the massive dealer network Nissan has in North America and use their EV prowess. The Arya is a beast of an EV for Nissan.

Now I can have some hope of a future redesigned Hybrid Maxima.

We finally bought ours. Ended up with a Toyota Crown Signia for $49k out the door. Crazy experience and really frustrating at times, but couldn't justify $8k more for the RX.
Congrats!
Thanks! It was kind of nuts. We had settled on a car and started building leverage across different dealers and price research, etc.

Then we saw the Crown Signia was out and it basically looked like a cheaper version of the same car. So we made an appointment for a test drive.

  1. Got to the dealer, and they were like "Oh, not buying it, can't test drive." Which was kind of a wtf moment. We confirmed beforehand we could test drive and then they got all slimy on arrival. So we left.
  2. Did the same song and dance with three different dealers. One said we couldnt drive it, two said we could. Second one, we got there, and they asked for the down payment and credit info before the test drive and I balked. They wouldn't budge. Third one, wife got pissed so they let her test drive. I didn't even go.
  3. She liked it enough that we wanted to go back together with the baby and check the thing we most are concerned about: me fitting comfortably with baby in car seat installed in the back. We confirmed 30 minutes before driving up...got there...and they were like "oh we don't have one." I kind of made a scene. Not as big as I should have, but when the guy said "you can sit in this other car, it's about the same size," I was like "We won't be doing that. We'll be leaving. It's ****ing slimy that we confirmed and you KNEW you didn't have the car and we spent 30 minutes coming here anyway. Disgusting." And we got up and left.
  4. On the way to a wedding, stopped in at a dealer we randomly saw and asked to sit in it with baby and see if we liked it. Guy was like "yeah sure!" He was super excited to show the car. Totally different vibe. We had questions about some features like remote start and such, got those answered, settled on $50k all in, and he was like "I'll have that color in a couple weeks, easy peasy, will call you then!" Shook hands and left.
  5. On the way back from the wedding a couple days later, we asked him for spec sheet and he sent it and the price was $53k. Like WTF. Had a bunch of optional dealer add ons that I was like "oh, I see, never mind. We don't want the $2300 in addons and this other stuff, you can take it off, and you don't need to do it when you get the car." He FLAT OUT REFUSED. We had literally just talked about how we wanted the basic trim and needed no extras, no paint protection, no dashcam, etc. He had the gall to say "good luck finding a dealer in Texas who wont include these." It blew my mind. Like...you don't even have the car yet, don't do the work and we're good. It's THAT high margin. Which is why I wouldn't ever pay for it obviously LOL.

So we emailed every Toyota dealer in the DFW area that we had an offer of $50.5k and attached a spec sheet and said we'll buy in 7 days, send us your best offer. The original dealer from step one sent us the car for $53k. I went off lol I was like "this has $4k of added crap I don't want. So I'll pay you $49k for it, and you can do the work or not." They declined to negotiate.

Then an offer came in at $49.8, so we said yes, made an appt for the next day, confirmed it was all in, out the door, etc. And then the next day 30 minutes before leaving the original dealer texted my wife AGAIN with a video of them walking around the car all excited for her and said they'd meet the $50.5k. I was like do not respond with anything other than that we've accepted a significantly lower offer and we're leaving to pick it up in 30 minutes.

They responded asking if there was anything at all they could do to win our business, apologized for the prior mistakes and said he's the manager and should have handled it from the beginning as a VIP experience, and a bunch of other BS. So we said "you can significantly beat them on price. We don't care about anything else."

So they undercut the others guys, we went over, we grabbed the car, and now we have it. It was absolutely wild. In 5 days the total price dropped ~15% purely from not being an idiot in negotiations. Absolutely mind blowing.
Really good stuff, thanks.

Haven't read the thread, was just digging for Toyota Land Cruiser info, as I'm pretty sure that's what I'll be buying.

I'm partial to Toyotas and this new LC fits all the parameters. I even like the old-school look of it. So I was thinking the '24 would be a decent buy now; used. But no, not even close.

Then I looked at the differences between a 24 and 25. Nothing of note. So price and (lack of) upgrades are almost the same. It's basically the same vehicle.

All of which leads one to believe that the only way to go here is with a new 25. That runs contrary to everything I was thinking/hoping. Am I'm wrong or missing something?

Why would one buy the 24? I guess I can wait it out and see if they finally drop the older models but not sure some rebate for a couple of grand would even be worth it.

So is it true that a vehicle that weighs 6K in Cali can get you up to a 25K writeoff?

If you are a realtor, caregiver or VR manager, this is what I was told. After a few beers.

Interesting. It does kind of jibe with seeing a lot of those same folks in those vocations with large vehicles.

Likely referring to a Section 179 deduction and yes, its a federal tax deduction you can take on certain vehicles over 6k lbs. There are some legal requirements that have to be met such as at least 50% of the use has to be for business purposes. That is why you’d see a larger % of self employed or business owners driving these bigger vehicles.

It was a big thing/joke a year ago when the cybertruck was coming out to see lots of businesses buying them and putting wraps/advertising on their cybertrucks. There’s also a thing called bonus depreciation that allows an even bigger additional tax writeoff in the first year but this is slowly being fazed out (pending what happens in Congress this year with tax policy.)

I haven't read the thread but my big takeaway from a very casual look yesterday was how expensive the "fun" SUVs like Jeep and Bronco are.

At this point, I'm pretty much open to anything from a Bronco to a 5 series BMW to a Corvette. And I was shocked at how expensive the SUVs are in comparison.

To narrow this down, what are your goals with the car? There are a lot of fantastic options out there today, that’s the great thing about today’s current car market. The bad, you’re likely going to have to pay a pretty penny of it.

I'm on my second MB GLC 300, and I absolutely love them. It's a great ride and has plenty of power when you want it.

Honestly, that's part of my problem. I have no idea really what I want.

I currently drive a GMC 2500 diesel truck with 36k miles that I use for pulling the 13,000 pound BBQ trailer.

It's incredible and I love it. Power to pull something that heavy but feels like a luxury car inside with heated seats and steering and such. The only downside is it's so big and can make parking tough sometimes if I'm downtown.

Plus it's still a 2500 truck so the ride isn't luxury smooth.

And while it's a beast, it's not especially "fun".

That's where Im drawn to a Bronco with a removable top. Living in Tennessee, I'd have a pretty wide window to have the top down.

Or something like a BMW 5 series sedan that would be more luxury. Or even a Corvette but just not sure that's my vibe.

I am also admittedly biased toward an American company. I realize some will think that's stupid, but it's my money.

So basically, I'm wandering. ;)

My opinion, and that’s certainly all it is, is since you have your beast to haul and drive around in I would probably be looking towards a fun car as it sounds like you’re looking for something to get some driving enjoyment out of. You have your every day work course, now get the phone car. A five series (depending on the model version) or a Corvette couldn’t be more on the opposite end of that spectrum, but they’re both fantastic cars that come with fun upsides and some obvious down sides. But both are great choices though.

This summer I’ll be in the market for my fun car. C8 ZO6 is on the short list. Fantastic values for performance cars.
I was pretty surprised at the cost of the Corvettes. Sure, 70k is lot of money for a car. But they look/feel like a spaceship compared to the Bronco or Landcruiser at the same price.

My brother had the 2022 Corvette. (Or was it 2021?)

I loved it. I thought it was sharp and that the ride was nice (for a passenger).

He liked it, but he said it wasn't intuitive to drive and that there were drawbacks. He wound up trading it in eventually because it was his "use" car for everyday life, and it just didn't fit with what he needed to do. He got a BMW to replace it. Thing ran nearly three digits to the left of the comma. Whoa. I get what they're saying when you ought to be prepared to spend a pretty penny on a car these days.

They are in the "luxury" class, but they are much more performance focused than luxury focused, at least IMO.

People really up here buying 150,000 dollar cars?
But seriously, that's the beauty of the C8 Corvette Stingray. Yeah, it's not the Z06 version, but it's still ridiculous performance at half the price and less than these Broncos and Raptors.

Greatest value for performance/"luxury".

I think I'm older than you, but how do you handle the "old guy having a mid life crisis in a Corvette" thing?
I turn 50 this year. My mom was giving me grief about the car and mid-life crisis thing. Had to remind her it’s no different for me than it was when I was 20 or 30, the car is just nicer now. It’s more about the ability

I think I'm older than you, but how do you handle the "old guy having a mid life crisis in a Corvette" thing?
You asked me this already before. It's not anything to handle because it's just not a thing unless you make it a thing.

Non-existent for me, no one has ever said anything, and it's not even the reason I have one.
Agreed 100%. Maybe because I’m a car guy it’s just different for me but I don’t really care what others think about it. I’m buying what I like for me and me alone (hell my wife doesn’t like the cars I buy for myself half the time). Other’s opinions have never bothered me. But I’m also that guy who at 25 was driving around in a mustang that set off car alarms when I drove past so I might not be the best example. Lol.

JB if you're thinking of spending Corvette money you really owe it to yourself to look into the EV's. Corvette speed with comfort and luxury that a Corvette can't touch.

You asked me this already before. It's not anything to handle because it's just not a thing unless you make it a thing.

Non-existent for me, no one has ever said anything, and it's not even the reason I have one.

I can see this. I'd like to think I don't care what others think but I'd likely be dishonest if I said that has zero factor.

There's also the element of the cost that projects something too. If I'm doing work at a homeless kitchen, rolling up in some cars vs others feel a little different. Again, I know maybe I shouldn't consider that but there is some element of it. Part of the cost thing though is related to my surprise on what cars cost I mentioned earlier. It seems crazy but the 2500 diesel truck to pull the BBQ trailer costs not much less than a Corvette. That seems wild. And some of the more expensive Jeeps and Broncos can cost more than a Corvette. That seems wild too.

You can match the acceleration of the Corvette while pulling your BBQ rig.

Thanks. Which ones should I look into?
For driveability without the bulk, if it were me I'd start by looking at Tesla Model X, the Lucid Air and maybe the Polestar. If you find any f those appealing the category will open up for you imo.

PS make sure you are testing the "dual motor" aka "all wheel drive" versions and punch it to get the acceleration. Even in AWD, I think Tesla has different packages available (ludicrous speed or something like that) but any AWD version should be enough to give you an idea.

I am such a fan of Rivian. I am waiting on the R3X which should be out next year. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a63446975/rivian-r3x-future-cars/

Rivian is really leaning into the adventure EV market which is a smart move, IMO. Campgrounds already have 220V plugs for RVs, so charging is easy. Rivian installed fast chargers at Yosemite and Joshua Tree and at least at Yosemite it was free of charge. And I do know that @BassNBrew absolutely loves loves loves his Rivian

That will be a fun vehicle, unfortunately I think we are looking at 2028 or 2029. R2 will need to be a huge hit with minimal mis-steps if Rivian wants to stay afloat.
