Charity Music Draft - Theme 2 (2 Viewers)

Just finished listening and scoring the first two rounds.   1-5 for the song and 1-5 for how well it fits the theme.   Will be interesting to see who I send in when we are done.   A lot of real cool songs and a few WTF's LOL.

Flying down to see @krista4's Kracken vs Ducks Wed night, Chiefs at Chargers Thursday night, Yotes and Ducks Friday night (use to have ST before moving to Boise) during an 8-day stay on 39th In Newport Beach with the gram kids and fam. I'll try to make my pick after we check in and before we leave for the game, but I'll still be in the air when I'm up, so just skip me until then.  6pm PT????
Thanks for the offer, but I don't want to do the write up and have it then sniped. LOL.

It was late, I know it's Kraken.  I was debating whether to misplace an apostrophe or not just to mess with you. LOL.

I was following the NHL thread during the off-season and supplemental draft and remembered several people spelling it wrong as Kracken.  Bugged me but I decided not to mention it.

I was in a meeting yesterday where a guy had a superfluous apostrophe in the header of every single slide he presented.   :hot:

Round 3

At first he thought the forced time together could be a good thing. It would give them time to talk about where it all went wrong and how to fix it.

As the hours turned to days he realized this was never going to happen. Once this was over,so were they and he started thinking about what his future would be like without her.

I love that you've been telling a story.

I think it would have been good shtick for someone to take exactly the same songs in this draft as they did on the first one.  Or for someone to take the same songs that Hov chose in the first one.
Or repeat their picks from a previous non-charity draft and see if anyone noticed.

I changed the NHL Thread title just fir you.

I get a lot of e-mail from people suggesting that I add a section for misused apostrophes. Sorry, folks, but it's not going to happen. First of all, the reason I started this site almost four years ago was because I was at once amused and mystified by the peculiar usage of quotation marks. Misused apostrophes usually aren't that funny; they're just annoying.

:lmao:

I knew you'd spot that.  Nevertheless, the site is full of grammar sarcasm.

I got divorced (for the last time) back in 1998; not coincidentally I wore this #### out of this song. It's a one-song soundtrack for separation/divorce.  Not sure if all the lyrics fit the topic, but the mood is unmistakable.

Round 3:  Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve
church. first song in these two drafts i'm kicking  myself for not taking

Rd 3 These Days by Nico

lyrics and mood make this the perfect fit imo. It touches on everything: isolation, lack of an outside life, giving up on romance, regret, boredom.

I've been out walking
I don't do too much talking
These days, these days
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
And all the times I had the chance to.

I've stopped my rambling
I don't do too much gambling
These days, these days
These days I seem to think about
How all the changes came about my ways
And I wonder if I'd see another highway

Richie Tenenbaum! I love this pick. Of course I do, but I love this pick.

Round 3.xx

The reactionary and the progressive both cleave to love of something greater than one's self to bear the burden of their existential reality. To be divorced from their ultimate goal they use that love to bridge the gap and find meaning in their lives. Or, sometimes they actually are afraid to die.

Artist: The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die

Song: Getting Sodas

We are the walls in formless shapes
The overbearing weight
This house weighs heavy on my mind
Erasing tapes, undocumented faiths

Took down your pictures and your belongings
In boxes buried under the soil
In the yard behind our tree
You'll wait

Wrote tiny poems through the lines of my hands
Little birds flew by me
The wind's been calling your name south
In pursuit of foreign lands

Can't go back
Where's your tact?
Where's your grace?
Where are the things you replace?
Are our words more than sound?
We cut the air and we've found
To lose your faith in the world
Is to lose faith in yourself
We are ghosts in your homes
We travel under the floor

And when our voices fail us we will find new ways to sing
When our bodies fail we'll find joy in the peace that it brings
And when our voices fail us we will find new ways to sing

The world is a beautiful place but we have to make it that way
Whenever you find home we'll make it more than just a shelter
And if everyone belongs there it will hold us all together
If you're afraid to die, then so am I

You know, if me and my partner had amicably decided to call it quits after a dozen years together, and as we prepared to separate our households, a pandemic struck, causing us to lose our income for the foreseeable future, and me and my soon-to-be-ex are living, together but apart, under one roof, stuck inside nearly all of the time I think that sometimes I'd feel I've got to 🎹 🎹 run away, I've got to 🎹 🎹 get away...

3.12 - Tainted Love - Soft Cell

Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away, I've got to
Get away from the pain you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn, I can't sleep at night

Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Tainted love

3.XX. “No Children” by The Mountain Goats

I truly hope this song hasn’t been taken I haven’t been paying attention to this draft much.

I'd been bouncing around four songs in my head that I was going to post after the draft was over, to represent what I would have selected were I participating.  This was one of them.  The lyrics to the Christmas song Tasker chose reminded me of this.  And now I'm sniped in a draft I'm not even in, by someone living in my house!  :lmao:

3.19  Carole King - It's Too Late

Stayed in bed all mornin' just to pass the time
There's somethin' wrong here, there can be no denyin'
One of us is changin', or maybe we've just stopped tryin'

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no, no, no, no
(No, no, no, no)

It used to be so easy, livin' here with you
You were light and breezy, and I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy and I feel like a fool

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it)
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no

There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too?
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you

But it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it)
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no, no, no

It's too late, baby
It's too late now, darling
It's too late

Thanks K4.  Flying over Long Beach now.  Really surprised this was still there and glad I could nab a fellow Idahoan.

This topic is such an oof/ouch for me. I've tried not to share much of my personal experiences online. A lesson I learned in the mid-90s when this internet thing was just an infant. I've been through two periods of dark emotional pain. The two years opiate addiction destroyed my marriage, and the two years my mom lived with me while losing to cancer.

I come close to telling more about my ex and the time we spent living together irreconcilably. I just can't. It's not your business.

2.xx REM - Everyboy Hurts

3.xx The Police - King of Pain

It probably isn't. I find it therapeutic to type it all out, put it into context, and then delete it. Preferably in Tim's 1978 thread, which I've littered with musings that I've since deleted. Hoo boy. Don't you know it.

:)
I did that twice before posting. 18 years later I still have love for my ex. She doesn't deserve me posting her dirty laundry for some music draft. In the past I've mentioned she ended up in prison. When a show like Hulu's Dopesick tries to depict what addicts go through, I am always disappointed. It's so much worse.

I can see where one would find involving others in their posts problematic. My heart goes out to you and her and in hopes of full recovery. I'll leave it at that.

R3  The Wrens - Happy

I realize I drafted this song in another recent draft but it's the first song I thought of when I read the theme and it fits perfectly with the mood I'm trying to establish in my playlist.  And it's a really great song.

You're the one I want
You're a chance to take
You're a hard break
And swore you'd never leave again

You're the only one
That I ever trusted
Or whoever cared at all

Is this how it's going to be?
Is this how you wanted me?

Broken down again
It's almost over now

Is this why you wanted me?
To watch as you walk away
You kept on killing me
And you don't even want to touch me
You don't even want to touch me

I was wrong
I've wasted on
Can't figure out
What happened to us
I won't count on, you anymore

I'll be all right
Don't worry 'bout me
Aren't you happy now?
You got what you want
I wanted you
But I'm over that now
I'm over it

I'm so sick of you and what we went through
Your lies to me
Won't win again
So don't kid yourself
It's better this way
It's all back to me

Round 3:

So, I was going to keep this an all women's perspective (having drafted Emmylou and Crow so far), but I just can't pass up this song.  Jason Isbell is a genius and I love just about anything he does and this song is just so sad and emotional yet awesome. I have a chance to go see him in Chattanooga in January.  Might be that I'm 3 whiskeys in - maybe that changed my mind.  PSA:  Dont' drink and draft.

Jebus, my mix is depressing.

This is the first minor snipe I've had in one of these.  I probably wasn't taking this in a 4 round draft, but it was on the radar for sure.  Great song.

i am sorry for being late i got tied up and just got home brohans my next pick is a song that i think is about a guy who still loves a gal but it didnt work out and now all he is is a shadow outside her door the original was by gord lightfoot who is a great in his own right but this version is by tony rice who was one of the finest guitar players ever to grace this rock and the guitar solo in this one is fantastic as usual so here it is take that to the bank bromigos

tony rice covering shadows

3rd Round - Phantogram - "Mouthful of Diamonds"

Despite their somewhat odd turn into trap (?) artists, old Phantogram in their electronic indie era was phenomenally underrated.  I still love new Phantogram, it's just different.

This song is sneaky depressing.  The persistent beat gets your toes tapping just a little bit, with the catchy fuzzy guitar riff.  But the song lyrics are about a failed relationship, with the singer lamenting losing her partner into a spiral of drug abuse, throwing away their relationship.

This is a fantastic live version from SXSW.

And if it isn't me
Then pack your bags and leave

Cool song. Love the lead singer's sense of style, actually. That's unrelated to music, really, but it's a cool sight.

Super busy again today!

Temple of the Dog Call Me A Dog

Aarguably my fave off this incredible album...

"And you tell me I'm low 'cause I've slept on the floor
And out in the woods with the badgers and wolves

You threw me out 'cause I went digging for gold
And I came home with a handful of coal

But when it's my time
To throw the next stone
I'll call you beautiful
If I call at all
And when it's my time
To call your bluff
I'll call you beautiful or leave it alone, yeah"

The times are all jacked on the spreadsheet.  I think I did my math right and I could have posted my pick at 7:30central, right?
