DR★ Music Draft reopened: make any outstanding picks and let's talk about the next draft (1 Viewer)

I had a serious gf in college who's only flaw was that she listened to Fogelberg all the time.

That and she slept around

a lot
In her defense, I might have been a tiny bit worse.

Ah the 70s. We were together a couple of years.

In just spent an hour picking a song for my keyboard player. I'm looking at the videos thinking. Man he looks healthy. ####. Not dead. Here would have been perfect.

6.15  Guru (from Gang Starr) - Rapper - "Mass Appeal"

The late 80s-early 90s is my favorite period in hip hop by far.  The music was getting pulled in all different directions by artists who had grown up with the genre and were looking to make it their own.

Gang Starr had some of the most successful efforts at fusing rap with jazz.  A lot of jazz musicians tried to approach it from their direction without great results but Gang Starr nailed  samples from 60s and 70s jazz records underneath Guru's smooth Brooklyn flow.  Guru took it one step further with his Jazzmatazz side project.  I loved his live collaborations with jazz artists at the time but they don't hold up as well as the Gang Starr material 25 years later.

This song has great beats from the incomparable DJ Premier and falls right in the mid-tempo wheelhouse of Guru.

I remember Guru vividly. My really good friend had gotten way into hip hop in the early '90s and was also a big classical/jazz fan. Jazzmatazz was in his car all the time when I came back from college in around...say...'93/4 or so. His mid-tempo style never appealed to me back then, but as I get older, I appreciate it more. Back then, to me, fast rap was still king and the invasion of Dre my sophomore year of college was something I hated. Anything slow to me sounded wasted, even though the distinctions were clear. But Jazzmatazz was where all the Native Tongue listeners went; I just didn't follow.

Anyway, I remember it vividly because he would give me #### about all the punk I was listening to and I would pick up his cassette off of the floor and go "Jazz-ma-tazz" and just sort of bust his chops in return.

7.01   Jeffrey Lee Pierce (from The Gun Club - "Singer" - "Texas Serenade"

To be honest, Pierce isn't much of a singer, especially compared to some the other artists being drafted.  He couldn't carry a tune if you loaded it in the van for him but he wails and moans with enough conviction to sell the song.

I checked the board to see if I ever drafted this before.  Both "Gun Club" and "Jeffrey Lee Pierce" return a 2011 post by me from the "whats the worst concert you've been to?" thread.  One of the shows I mentioned was a Gun Club concert at the I-Beam in 1983.  Pierce's voice was shot but I remember there were a couple of songs where it all came together.

A couple of days after I started this thread, I found out that the woman that I attended that show with had passed away from ovarian cancer.  God bless Jil and all the other punk rock girls young and old.

6.11  Dave Alexander   "I Wanna Be Your Dog"  (bassist)

original member of seminal punk pioneering powerhouse the Stooges, Alexander appeared on the first two albums before getting the boot for showing up at a gig too drunk to play - can you imagine someone being so ###### up that it forced Iggy to drop the ban hammer?

he passed shortly thereafter, due to complications from pancreatitis - one of the lesser known "27 Club" members, a very tragic ending.

but, his mark is felt all over those first two groundbreaking platters, and his fuzzy, grinding work in this slow burner is evidence enough that the dude could flat-out shine in that rhythm section.   my favorite Stooges/Iggy tune, thank you Spotify for LOOP mode

Iggy on the intro to "Dum Dum Boys":

'How about Dave?'

'OD'd on alcohol'

ETA: aptly described as: "human metronome, this mf'er"  courtesy of @rockaction

####.

The only rapper on my list. Love the sound of his voice, musical choices and even his "flow".

I would've gone with Lifesaver, one of my favorite tunes of any genre (or Respect the Architect for hahaha)

I told ilov80s that we could wait on this guy. I forgot you were in the draft.  :lmao:

I was thinking of Fun House, though. Human metronome, this mf'er.

You've got a hell of a band, otb.

Song could be written next week, still sounds like the future

This stuff almost went out of print in the late '80s. You had to special order it around where I lived to get a copy in record stores. Nobody -- I mean, nobody --  was listening to it in the Farmington Valley of CT back then. You had to go to the big book in the random store and fill out one of those strips and wait weeks. No word-of-mouth, you had to read the trade mags.

I wonder how much has been lost.

Uhhhh...

This was my local record store. Had literally everything, going waaaaaaay back. No filling out strips... just search and destroy. Every music nerd band that came through the area would shop there in the "rare room"... Wore out my thumbs flipping through those bins.

Doc was by a HS mate (I have money on Kickstarter but didn't get anything promised)...I mentioned the Dead omnipresence previously.

That's a heck of a store.

Round 6

Southbound - Gregg Allman - Keyboards

Draft was getting a little chaotic last night, I think. Late night West Coast stuff, maybe?

You're not on as skipped, really.

Must be because you're a Jet fan.

Can you believe we're the best team in NY right now? Oh, boy...

I don't know. I think so, but I can't speak for him. He's often on skip, but who knows this time?  I can't even give you a ruling. I'll hit you up if he is.

eta* I'm just sitting here at the computer with this up, so this is what I plan to do today.

It's ok.

Yeah it's fairly shocking but says more about the Giants.

My Band

Songwriter: Warren Zevon

Round 5

Levi Stubbs - Frontman for The Four Tops

I've sung this guy's praises in the Long Titles draft and I'll gladly pick him here. I love Stubbs' voice and his ability to deliver it with raw powerful emotion. Whether it is a love song or a heartbreak song, you can hear his emotion. Hard to pick any one song but but you can really feel his pain in this one.

You Keep Running Away

Darling my heart has been obsessed with you
Just look at me, I'm not the man, I used to be

I used to be proud, I used to be strong
But all of that's changed girl, since you come along
Your lovin' sweetness is my weakness
Though I need you, dear, I just can't keep you near

Wasn't able to keep up with the draft yesterday but was able skim throughout the day. There were some excellent value picks. Loved the Croce and Whitney picks.

I owe another pick and will send it through when I figure out which direction I'm going with this.

ya know, there's a sped up version of this that i have on my Spotify ... and it is as face ripping as "Search and Destroy" - the song is such a remarkable artifact of all the wonderfully decadent material they tossed out there to the post-Woodstock/Hippie cabal ... straight out ta Detroit with a ####### flamethrower ?

Can you pitch shift and loop with Spotify, otb?

eta* I only ask because you seem to be alluding to it. Would love to have an easy interface to do that instead of figuring out Garageband or something like that. Even though GB should be easy, it doesn't seem worth the import stuff.

folks can blag on about how great the post concert party would be with their rosters, but, i'm afraid i can't - most of my lot would be in the Hoosegow prior to them hittin' the gig

? ? ???

I love how you picked a guy who didn't even have to have lyrics to get banned. I was thinking about that song when I went to bed last night and thought...yeah...that should be banned.

not sure on pitch shift, RA - but the interface is quite intuitive and user friendly ... only program i use for music the last 5 or so years.

Sure thing. I was just looking, actually. I found repeat, but was wondering if they'd made it so you could do that with segments of songs. Would seem to run massively in the face of harder copyright restrictions on everything, but who knows?

Can you imagine if Spotify looped? They could easily put that function there. You can't even go forward on Napster/Rhapsody, I don't believe.

it's not a music editing software... although you might have some control over length of fade in/out between songs.

also the only program I've used for music this decade. has completely rejuvenated my musical awareness....  spotify with all the bubbly hearts and kittens in socks just hangin' around possible.

eta: but you can play a song on loop if that's what you're after. parts of a song, not so much.
