DR★ Music Draft reopened: make any outstanding picks and let's talk about the next draft (1 Viewer)

Went a little nerdy this afternoon (sitting watching Red Zone, avoiding housework!).

There are tabs that show each of our picks. Please go and check to see if your picks are correct, if you do have a correction, either let me know in the thread, or make a change on the 'Draft Sheet' page. Each of the other sheets are just links to the 'Draft Sheet' page that are filtered and sorted. When a change is made, the other sheets will reflect those changes.

I have also included sheets for each draft category. If you have a question on if someone has been drafted, look there!

You may have, I may not have been able to choose! :)

I'm looking at having quite the Progressive/Psychedelic/Blues band.

Bob Marley, James Jamerson, Richard Wright, Marvin Gaye, Chris Cornell, and Robert Johnson all know a little bit about the blues in their personal experiences.  And Muddy will bring it all together.  I would be really excited to see them do some Jammin Psychedelic Reggae too.  So much versatility.

i'll bite:

9.08 Tupac Shakur - Me Against the World

fits the theme of the day.....
somebody said over-rated... and he was big during a time I didn't really listen to this stuff, so his catalog is lost on me... but universally lauded as one of the best ever (and certainly for those that are dead). in terms of value- seems a tremendous VBD pick.

a kid down the street went into music production early on... and tupac moved to the area around then (Marin City), so they apparently worked together and hung out early on.

wait a sec... I haven't picked a rapper yet. dammit. will have to dive down that rabbit hole somehow.

my biggest snipes have been: guru, lou reed, etta. but guru is proving to be the most difficult to replace.

FYI - we can double dip on rappers and bass. Just sayin' :)

I'm proposing this as an eleven rounder with the following categories:

3 singers
2 guitar
1 rapper (double dipping allowed)
1 bass  (double dipping allowed)
1 drum
1 keyboard
1 other instrument (e.g. horns, harmonica, didgeridoo)
1 composer/songwriter

When i thought Marley might fall to me @ 1.08 (never imagining Hendrix or Prince would), i wanted him badly because he's the Voice of the World but i worried about him fitting in (same reason i didnt take Elvis til y'all stuck me with him in rd 4) with a band where i sought the most fiery collaboration. A friend of mine is in a weekend band w a great guitar player & dominating personality who idolizes Neil Young and every song they practice, from Beatles to Counting Crows, comes out sounding like Neil Young. It's quite uncanny but i wonder if some superstars can work outside their "voice".

a great turntable would have fit in with my boys a lot better than a rapper, but just the chance to have Elvis's & Tupac's entourages to hang out and get to know each other while my other guys were workin up the tunes clinched it for me.

my favorite bass player - still the most beautiful tone i've ever heard on the instrument and the player i'd seek first if i was putting a HellBand together - is still a PM away from being yours if you dont want to doubledip

Eephus is allowing picking of Bass Players and Rappers by 2 people. He was afraid of the pool not being that deep.
oh... I didn't understand it that way at all.

they're both plenty deep, IMO. no reason to take the same guy twice for the same thing. my breadth of dead rappers I genuinely like and/or know isn't deep... but it'll give me a chance to find somebody new to me... kinda the fun of these things (although usually from seeing the other picks- not my own).

the first one I thought of is still available too.

plus Paul McCartney.

On this Squad, Bob will do most of his damage with his pen (and rolling skills). I still have a dilemma with my last singer spot.

Initially I wanted the INXS guy but I didn't really know if that would work sound wise  (like you said).  It would probably sound like INXS becuase his voice is so distinct. Cornell will be a big piece of our lead vocals (along with Marvin Gaye) but I still feel like their is something missing.

I have four leaders in my choice for final lead vocals.  They all have a good reason for me to pick them.  One doesn't have much material but would help the chemistry of the group immensely.   One has the sweetest voice you would ever want to hear, and is criminally underrated imo.  One is a thriple threat and a front man, but not a game changer.  The fourth does one thing REALLY well and he will probably be my choice.  Tune in tomorrow to see...

Cheap.  And Pac is overrated big time.
relative to the other dead rappers? will be interested in seeing your ratings for those guys.. again- I don't know tupac at all, and never really liked the little I heard from him (when he was huge)- but there has to be a reason he was so liked (and also respected... at least by guys I know who like and know the genre a lot more than me).

Thought he would go first two rounds. Coulda punted Easy E way down the road had I known.
No, I would have taken Eazy with my next pick.  He's a god and his voice would have fit in with what I'm doing.  Nate Dogg was a solid fill though.

I was just never impressed by his work.  I grew up with these guys playing in the backround night and day.  I never understood the Pac love even when he was alive.  I think people liked his headband and saying "Pac" honestly.

Eazy is the greatest dead rapper imo and I love Biggie.  When that Eazy record came out (I was in middle school) it blew us all away.  We got NWA AFTER that for some reason and we thought the EAZY solo was stronger.  We all loved his voice.

There were some great records around that time (P.E. Nation of Millions comes to mind) but NOTHING hit us as hard as Eazy did.  The next time I personally was shook like that was when Rage Against the Machine appeared.

He's got power & presence and no one has yet shown me what a great rapper is. i tried a lot when Kanye & Talib Kweli were coming up to raves&raves to understand why they were better than rhytmic tricksters like Snoop & Busta Rhymes, who i thought were head&shoulders above the rest but no one thought diddly of. so i just give up, i know he'll give the band some interesting breaks and that's fine.

I was going to discuss this when we were done but there's nothing going on out there but panic & partisanship today, so.....Since Elvis and Tupac dont fit my other guys, i imagine using them like hip-hop guys use R&B singers. We will write kickass bridges for Elvis to come in on, rhyme breaks in the call&response part of the soloing for 2Pac and then have them both come in to sell the end. Should work pretty well.

I actually agree with you on Snoop and Busta.  I would take either over Pac at my house.  Then again, I love Too $hort!

You could use Pac as a backup singer.   His voice is pretty good.

9.10 - J Dilla - Rap/Hip Hop Producer - Last Donut Of The Night

The name of the game is lightworks

To say that Dilla is something special is an understatement. From his earlier days with Slum Village and the Pharcyde through his work with Common and Stones Throw records, all Dilla did was prove himself the best around. Some have loved what he does with the drums in each beat. Others his selections and samples. Dilla died from a rare blood disorder way before his time, and they named a street after him in Montpelier, France. The French get some things right, after all. Here's our man at his finest. For a DJ, it's about time he got his recognition.

More Dilla
I liked this pick then of course forgot you picked him.

I've been tempted to take producer/djs...mostly because they're the only ones popping up on my google searches that I recognize (or at least who's work I recognize). there's another two that are hugely tempting (one of whom definitely gets on the mic- but tbh isn't that great to my ears)... but I thought I'd stay pure with "rapper". this meant google directing me to a few (heard of some, not the others) and me picking one that I'd never heard of until today. I like this tune though, he's from NYC, and he seems to get some respect (and died in a hail of bullets rather than from over-eating)...

9. ... Big L- No Endz, No Skinz.

YES!!!

I've been pushing Big L for a while. Have you seen this freestyle? This is fast rap at its finest. For pure rappers, you drafted well.

thanks. like I said- google led me to him today. never heard of him or his work prior.

lol at the top comment:

"Im so ahead of my time, my parents havent met yet..." Are u ####### kidding me??
He outclasses Jay a bit on these bars, but Jay cut his teeth as a fast rapper.

Jay-Z is awesome. He can ride a beat or get up in it if he wants.

Need to catch up here:

Round 7: Celia Cruz - Singer - La Vida Es Un Carnival

Round 8: Tito Puente - Other Instruments (percussion) - Oye Como Va

I received two comp tickets to see Luis Fonsi at Foxwoods this past Friday night. The wife and I like a few of his songs (Despacito, Llegaste Tu) and we enjoy Spanish and Latin music in general, so we decided to go. About 70% of the crowd was latino but he took an opportunity to express his gratitude to all of the the non-Spanish speaking fans for being there to support the Latin music and culture.

These picks are along those same lines. An ode to Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, early pioneers in the Latin movement. They helped pave the way for artists like Luis Fonsi, Marc Antony, Shakira  , Pitbull etc to have the musical presence that they do in today's community.

I almost took the first guy in Guitar of all categories, and I used to love those over eating mofo's I assume you are talking about.  Both were in Crush Groove also fwiw.

ETA: Not to be a Richard...

@Eephus- Two questions about 'Other instruments'

Mister CIA chose George Martin on the 'Piano' and Waingro chose Tito Puente as 'Percussion.' Should these be in the 'Keyboards' and 'Drums' categories or are we not being that specific?

Well a percussion instrument doesn't necessarily have to be "drums".
