I guess for the discussion I just don't see the difference between scented body washes, deodorants, and after shaves compared to cologne. That is where my confusion about the overly negative sentiments about cologne come from.
I'm just guessing, but I think there's chemicals that are often in colognes that aren't in your average soaps or deodorants. My wife wears some lighter perfumes, but she stays away from florals because they are major triggers. For colognes, it's anything musky or sharp.
I use a body wash that's generally some sort of "ocean" smell and a similarly scented Arid anti-perspirant. The old spice soap that my son used to use could give me an issue every now and again but it wore off a lot more quickly than a cologne.
