They've hit the easy point of their schedule where small mistakes don't cost them. They'd blow past most of these teams regardless of the coaching.
Commanders
Rams
Ravens
Panthers
Steelers
Commanders

Isn't the "easy part of their schedule"

After their rough start and the bye, they faced Cleveland with Watson, the Giants, the Jags, the Cowboys... those were easy wins for this squad. I don't see those victories as proving anything.
Laugh emoji.

See how he conveniently left out the Bengals, who have the #6 offense in the league, on the road. The Commanders who have the #5 offense, and were fighting for the NFC East division lead, and the Rams who had won 4 of their last 5, and were a game out of the NFC West.

Did I say every game was easy? No. I said it was an easy stretch of games with some lesser opponents. Many gimmies, with some teams on the edges of the playoff picture sprinkled in. My point was accurate. The harder games are coming, and the coach and play calling are more likely to be an issue than the offense or defense will be in those games.

Is anyone really sweating that Saquon is more likely to fail to deliver than Sirianni?
Tougher games? Like the Panthers, giants, commanders (who you discounted earlier), and cowboys (who you discounted earlier)?

Are you leaving off the playoffs I was talking about for some reason? Are you predicting the panthers, giants, and cowboys are going to sneak into the postseason? That's a heck of a run you're assuming. Bold.

New to the thread, just read the whole thing. I am confused what some consider to be a good coach?

43-19 and some have him in the lower 3rd, sorry I can’t take those posters seriously going forward.

Top 10 for me, guy came in and the team has been top notch since, something I can only dream of as a Bears fan.

This guy gets it. Outside of Andy Reid, Dan Campbell, John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin Who are the litany of people that are better than him? The guys never missed the playoffs, and he made a Super Bowl. And he might make another one!

Geez...this schedule may be easier than the easiest schedule of all time two years ago. Heck, the Cheese Cake Factory should be th Eagles official sponsor.

I like cheesecake. And cheese steaks.

Maybe a cheese steak cheesecake? 🤔

Not sure why people want to give Sirarri the credit instead of Howie Rosieman. This team would be a lot different with an average running back opposed to Saquon.

Cheese steak: Will it cheesecake? Yes! ✅

The conversation really comes down to what do you think Siriani contributes. Vic Fangio runs the defense which is loaded with talent. Jeff Stoutland is widely considered one of the best offensive line coaches in the NFL and may be primarily responsible for the run game success. Kellen Moore is the offensive play caller which is an area that Sirianni has struggled in the past. Is he a player's coach that sets the culture and motivates players? He doesn't seem very effective at that. There are reports that him and Hurts don't get along and last season and this past offseason was all bad vibes.

He's a competent coach but he's similar to a McCarthy where he can steer the ship. He's fine, I'd rank him around 15 or 18.

45-22 (.672) with what is now the best roster in the NFL, has never missed the playoffs. I remember Y1 they started out bad, but they made adjustments. 44-6 blowout of the Lions seemed to coincide with a late season run. They went 24-4 the next season and 2/3rds, you don't accomplish that without being a great coach IMO. Came about as close as possible to winning a SB, I still don't understand how Hurts fumbled that ball.

Seems like the perception is the Eagles performance is closely tied to the quality of their coordinators. That's probably true in a lot of situations.

He's not an offensive mastermind, nobody thinks he is a genius, and AFAIK (Philly guys correct me, IDK) stays tf away from the defense. I think it is an underrated trait to understand your limitations. He has a strong personality and defined ideas about how things should be done, but he's flexible - he'll switch up if things aren't working. That is a true alpha IMO. He hires smart people because he is comfortable with letting others figure out solutions, his job is to steer the ship & it's his name on it - he knows you can delegate tasks but not responsibility. He holds others accountable, and that is an important characteristic.

Ever had a great boss who maybe wasn't skilled at details or technical aspects, but he knew how to manage? That's Nick Sirianni.

People make a big deal out of the emotional outbursts. But I'm of the opinion he has exceptional emotional intelligence, he understands how to connect with and motivate players. He is authentic and genuine. Players pick up on that, if you're trying to be something you are not, they'll see right through it. He has the team unified with a bunker mentality, it's us against the MFing world.

I prefer my guy MCDC, but IMO Sirianni is a pretty awesome coach. He is not everyone's cup of tea and I understand why some criticize him - IMO he is misunderstood - but if I was an Eagles fan I would just say "FU - scoreboard".

He's probably one of the best in the league at that. His message has consistently been embraced by the players. When you hear them interviewed they truly love this guy and would run through a wall for him. Even after the blow up at the end of last season, they are maybe playing better this year than in '22. How many coaches could hold a team together after something like that?

all of this.

Interesting perspective. So is coaching irrelevant?
Yep, the only thing that matters is the GM and schedule apparently.

Nick Sirianni, not a good coach because he made good hires and has good players.

Exactly. His position is so much more nuanced than who he has as coordinators. Just like the coordinators job is so much more nuanced than their players.

How do you measure a coaches ability to find and train other coaches? Where does that rank on your list of priorities? How have the GOAT’s performed in these same areas? How about communication? How about motivation?

There’s a laundry list of things that make any coach good or great and he seems to be checking quite a few boxes at the moment.

The criticism with the emotional outburst is fair. Early on, he lacked the ability to control himself and not get into it with fans. That’s not something you wanna see from a leader. At the same time, these are things you can work on to get better at and it appears as if he’s making steps in the right direction. Even the greatest coaches of all time make ridiculous mistakes, however, but did they learn from them and improve?

How do you measure a coaches ability to find and train other coaches?
I think this is something that a lot of fans don't consider, but is highly important.

I follow the Ravens, and every year their staff gets raided. This year, they lost their DC (became a HC) and his two highest assistants (became DCs). Their OL coach - one of the most respected in the league - died. Others got poached, too. This has been happening to them for 25 years (well, not the death) at a higher rate than any other franchise (forget the exact number, but recall reading an article about it in the preseason), yet they continually find new coaches and develop them.

It's the cost of doing business for a stable, winning franchise. You lose staff and players.

I don't pay enough attention to Philly to know much about Sirianni as a person, but I do know he wins a crap-load of games. He's had some bad-looking episodes, but so have many other coaches.

I'm not sure where I'd rank him. I'd have him behind Reid, both Harbaughs, and Tomlin for sure. To me, he's in that next tier somewhere and it's a fairly large group. I don't know.....somewhere between 5 and maybe 11? If he keeps winning at this rate (& assuming those others are still doing well), he's gonna be a lot closer to 5 than 11.

I think he's better than at least half the league at being a head coach. He appears to be struggling this year a bit but, you didn't clarify which year, just one year. I voted 13-16 range, while I put Sirianni at 16 as that spot just feels right.
This year, with a draft starting today.
Same. Rank of 16. Slightly better than half the leagues HC's.

An aside:
As an Eagles fan it is tough to leave any bias behind. Many fans feel he needs to go. I am not one of them. I don't feel I am being so much "forgiving" as I am just realistically giving him some additional time to "right the ship," so to speak. A HC being fired mid-season also feels too much like a knee-jerk reaction to a myriad of very fixable team problems.

Thanks. And for sure, this isn't about firing coaches mid season. I was just interested in what you folks thought on a ranking.
Hi @Joe Bryant ! Happy Thanksgiving!!

I've recently been wondering whether or not you have voted in your own poll here. There is no option within the poll to see who or how everyone voted. We only know who and how by posts made.

So, did you vote in the poll? How did you vote?

If you did not vote, could you please let us know a little bit about the disagreement with your friend? Where did you rank Nick Sirianni back a few weeks ago? Where do you rank him now?

By the way, these questions are all made under the same premise as yours; a Pick Your Coach draft.

Joe is a big-time Shanahan fan. I wonder if he's having second thoughts about his coaching ability.

Oh, I doubt it. Every coach has to deal with events/situations that are beyond their control. Right?

Blessed with a talented roster, wouldn't expect much less than this from the Eagles in 2024
Made the Super Bowl in 2022
If they manage to return to the Super Bowl in '24, that would elevate Siriani into the Top 8-10 head coaches even if the fans didn't agrree
Owners would line up to hire him

I am a big fan of Kyle Shanahan. I'll always lean toward a guy like him or Andy Reid or McVay that are effectively Head Coaches/Offensive Cooridnators. I think it makes continuity so much easier when you lose the actual offensive coordinator.

What’s your take on the label that “he can’t win the big game and shrinks in the spotlight.”?

Outright false? A little truth to it? Accurate?

I think for sure it's not "outright false". And more than "a little truth". I think one would have to say it's accurate. At least in the sample size so far.

But I'm not too big on making generalizations like that on super small sample sizes. People say the same for Lamar Jackson. And he's clearly a great QB.

But I'm not too big on making generalizations like that on super small sample sizes. People say the same for Lamar Jackson. And he's clearly a great QB.
Truth. And the same was said about Andy Reid before he got to KC.

I voted #16. Higher than most in the poll.

I don’t even remember voting, but I put him 25-28 😂 I remember this was after he chirped at our own fans and being beyond pissed at the sloppy start before the bye. Especially after last year’s collapse.

I’d bump him up significantly now. But you’re smart enough not to value my opinion already.

You're of course entitled to believe whatever you like. But that list of folks have demonstrated over the years they know football.

Back then I would venture to guess 90% of Eagles fans wanted him fired. Shows how quickly things can change in this league.

He ranks a a head coach who like Kyle Shanahan makes the team more about them and then blows it because the team is all about them.

Sorry, can't unsee the epic collapse that was the last 2-3 months last season with a very good roster. They were literally the worst team in the NFL the 2nd half of last season. Drew Lock was beating them.

To take a 6 game stretch and put more weight on that then the other 56 games, including a total rebound from said 6 game stretch that you want to put all the weight on makes no sense.

A Drew Lock team beat the Eagles last year. Guess what? If you coach long enough, that is going to happen. Look at Week 15 in 2010, an Andy Reid coached Eagles were fighting for a 1st round bye and lost to a Vikings team lead by Joe Webb.

In just the last week:

Mike Tomlin's team just lost to the Cleveland Brown's led by Jameis Winston.
Dan Quinn's team just lost to the Dallas Cowboys led by Cooper Rush.
DeMeco Ryans team just lost to the Tennessee Titans led by Will Levis.

To me, people who put Sirianni in the 29-32 range fall into 3 categories. Cowboys fans, clueless, or haters. Especially when this season we have these coaches:

Kyle Shanahan has been a head coach for 8 seasons, he's on his way to his 4th losing season. Kevin Stefanski has been a head coach for 5 seasons and he's on his way to his 3rd losing season. Then you got guys that have been fired already in Saleh and Allen. Guys like Jerod Mayo (3-9 in his first season), Doug Pederson (about to get fired again), Antonio Pierce (on the hot seat), Dave Canales (3-8 in his first season), Brian Daboll (on the hot seats, another losing season, just lost his locker room), Mike McCarthy (lame duck, probably getting fired) and Matt Eberflus (never had a winning season in 3 years, probably getting fired).

When you have coaches who coach at a 7th grade level running a side of the ball for an NFL team that happens.

The difference in performance in 22, 23 and this year should make that clear.

Which is all well and good, as this is how a conversation goes. You have your opinion and I have mine. But posting a list of people who disagree with and telling others to ignore them is immature and non-constructive. I guess that is 2024, it’s enough for me to disagree/ignore someone, I have to make sure everyone ignores them…

17-20 for me. Team is loaded with talent and is way too inconsistent. To me it seems he doesn't make the adjustments that good coaches do.

Yep it was a disaster. A lot of palace intrigue as to what happened there. I think that they had two bad coordinators in Brian Johnson and Sean Desai, but the team was winning despite them. They zipped Desai (a little prematurely IMO) and handed they play calling duties to none other than Pencil Boy Patricia. I 100% believe that was an order that came down from Howie or Lurie (not Nick) as Pencil Boy was a consultant with the team. He was an unmitigated disaster. I've told this anecdote before but it illustrates what a butthole this guys was.

It was week 16, we'd just beaten a terrible NYG team after getting destroyed for three weeks in a row. The season was definitely not over at this point-we were 11-4 and had just put up 33 points. A reporter asked Hassan Reddick-a legitimately premier edge rusher-about how he was being dropped into coverage often. He gave an answer sort of like, "I don't understand it. I get paid to sack the QB not cover a WR." A fair point in my opinion.

The next week they were playing Arizona. The first play of their drive, butthole DC has Hassan drop back into coverage. Kyler hits McBride for a 30 yard reception. Butthole DC called this play just to spite Reddick for speaking out the week before. This is what we were dealing with last year.

My point is, most coaches would probably be zipped at the end of the last year. The ones who wouldn't be zipped would almost certainly not be able to have their team bounce back. That Sirriani has this team playing at the level they are after THAT season is a testament to what an amazing coach he is.
