Is it just me or is this weird? (1 Viewer)

So what we're saying here -- and I'm just reading the tea leaves here -- is that it's okay to be a turkey nihilist so long as the other food is good?

I dissent. Turkey or bust and only turkey with mashed and big gravy boats. Give me that basted turkey with the skin on it, baby.

Anything else is heathenry.

Yes, this is a political post.
I'll accept prime rib in place of turkey, but nothing else

meh, sounds fine. When I was growing up we had lobster tails or king crab, filet mignon and giant shrimp cocktail - and it was the only time of the year we splurged like that

why?

because we had fried chicken a couple of times a week - and had gravy/mashed potatoes almost every meal. Rarely had baked chicken - unless it was in a casserole, we all thought baked turkey was a bland and drier version of fried chicken (never got tired of it).

my mom and dad reasoned that the pilgrims gathered the best of all the foods they could get their hands on for the feast - so that's what they did.

will there be stuffing and mashed potatoes? maybe i'm weird but those are my favorites.
Just got a text. No stuffing or mashed potatoes either. Quinoa and mashed turnips instead.
I'd have spent maybe three seconds before replying with "I'm out." I'm a traditionalist, maybe because I love, love, love turkey and all the other traditional Thanksgiving side dishes. But no way I'd be having a meal like that for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Turkey is not all that special. My mom is planning on Beef Wellington instead of turkey this year. In-laws in New Mexico are usually enchiladas when we get together with them. Maybe it is just the maudlin part of me, but don’t care too much about the entree when only so many holidays with the family.

I love turkey but if there was no turkey I'd be ok if we had mashed potatoes, Cole slaw, stuffing, corn, or whatever other sides you desire. The day is about all the sides

we have about 20 over and have turkey briscuit and ham I do the ham and it is my favourite take that to the bank brohans

While traditional, turkey is pretty low on my list of fowl (minus deli meat), and I make excellent turkey. We are hosting and I was thinking about roasting chicken or game hens. Likely stay with turkey for my parents.
So overrated as a meal.
It's absolutely fantastic once a year, but not much more than that.
I don't get it. Does it magically taste better on thanksgiving as opposed to every other day?
I don't care if there is turkey. As long as there is a good meal who cares what the meal is?
Yes, extremely overrated, and even causes problems cause of how long it takes to prepare, cook, and hear people argue about how to make it, and hear people complain that they had to make the turkey.

 Yes

I thoroughly enjoy turkey for a whole week once a year.

I normally cook 2 turkeys. I put one in the oven late Wednesday night for the noon meal and put the supper turkey in when the first one is done.

I started cooking the turkey for the in laws when undercooked turkey showed up on the table

turkey is awful
Few years back, we had a big family Thanksgiving, and we did multiple birds. Somehow we did one Butterball, and one free range all natural, blah blah blah. Probably my hippy aunt's idea.

Anyways, it's not a comparison I recommend. The difference was almost vulgar. You realize if the Butterball was a person, it was My 600 Pound Life.

It was funny are the time, but that one meal kind of got my entire extended family off turkey.

A little weird but is Turkey really that great? Seems reasonable to mix it up
I make a turkey once a year. So, no. I have almost all the other dishes mentioned in here multiple times throughout the year. I guess a whole lot of FBGs are throwing turkeys in the oven throughout the year.

We stopped doing turkey for Thanksgiving like 15 years ago. For whatever reason, our little family tradition became jambalaya instead.

Eat what you feel like.
Love this. Advocated for this when I was a child through now. Unfortunately, both my mom and wife think my take is dumb.

So, to answer the OP, I personally wouldn’t care. But this is still weird. That information should be included in the opening message.

It’s tradition. You have to have a turkey if you’re hosting people. It would be like hosting a Christmas get together with no tree.
Start your own traditions. There's much better food out there than turkey, and Christmas trees are pointless and take up space.
Unfortunately, my wife is all about following tradition. It is what it is.

I'll have to respectfully disagree. For many of us, Christmas trees are tied to some of the best memories we have of childhood, time with parents and family, etc. In fact, I find your statement to be, quite frankly, amazingly close minded. Even if you don't care for Christmas trees, I'm amazed that anyone would be so clueless about that as to call them "pointless." Seems remarkably close minded.

I always choose a tree that has a point.

Close minded??? It's my personal opinion towards them. I didn't say it needs to be yours.

Perhaps you could have worded it better, maybe starting with some thing like "IMO.." "Christmas trees are pointless and take up space" is a matter-of-fact statement, so that is how I read it.

It’s certainly not traditional, but I personally don’t have any issue with it. For me—Thanksgiving is about hanging with the family, enjoying a day off, and watching football. On the food side of things—I mainly view Thanksgiving as an excuse or an opportunity to over indulge. Basically the only food requirement that I have is that I need to enjoy the food, and to probably eat too much of it. While we usually do Thanksgiving with turkey and fixings, one of my favorite Thanksgivings was when my family and I had a feast of take out Chinese food.

my in-laws refuse to make decisions. especially when they're gathering for any type of social event. it's always a last second flurry of calls, escalating anxiety about who is doing what, when, where, how, etc.

one year my mother in law started thawing the turkey ON THANKSGIVING MORNING. and fed it to us barely cooked just a few hours later. those of us dumb enough to politely eat even small amounts of it wound up violently ill that night. that's largely why i hate turkey today.

in ensuing years, we ate finger foods like meatballs (which my MIL makes for every occasion which are just thawed and warmed), a veggie plate and pie that was earned at the morning's turkey trot. not because we couldn't collectively pull together the cost of a thanksgiving dinner, but because doing so meant coordination and communication which is an impossibility.

the last few years, because they can't get their **** together and agree on anything, i've funded the whole meal and bought what i wanted. first couple years there was griping, but #### em. risking a 13 lb. turkey being in the oven at 250 for a couple hours then landing on my plate is not a risk i'm willing to take anymore.

You sound like oodles of fun.

All of this would make me go ape guano. That level of incompentence is just not a thing for me.

Absolutely not. This is a message board. The "opinion" part could not be more obviously implied.

Same. Maybe 10 years ago or so we were supposed to do thanksgiving at one of my uncle's but they had to cancel last minute. By last minute I mean like two hours before people were supposed to show up. It wasn't a ton of people going, maybe 10, so I told everyone to just come over my house and we'd figure something out. I ordered like 75 bucks worth of Chinese, picked it up like # half hour later, and there ya have it. Awesome Chinese food. It was one of the better thanksgivings I think. No arguing or anxiety over food prep, no dishes to clean up, probably cheaper, nice assortment of food, some people bright some deserts.........
Funny thing, when I went to pick up the Chinese, the place was empty.
