1. Draft degree (Mixon)

2. Mixon played behind the 5th worst OL last year. This will be improved this year.

3. Competition: Mixon got a little over 60% share last year which should increase but Gio is not going anywhere.

4. Competition B: If the Colts have confidence in Mack then why did they draft not one but two running backs. There’s too much uncertainty for anyone to take that chance right now.

5. I own both so I hope they both produce at a high level but the arrow points to Mixon on both expectations and opportunities.

1) I think I generally count draft pedigree less than most people at certain positions(like RB).

2) They both played behind awful OL's that would presumably play better. A lot depends on the health of the two teams. Honestly, until I see differently I'm assuming both will play in bottom third OL's again.

3) Gio is good but I also think people are sleeping on Mark Walton. To me Mixon has to deal with a lot stiffer competition than Mack. It's possible that Mixon/Gio/Walton are all better than Mack.... but Mack may just get more opportunities imo. People seem very high Hines but when I hear the staff talk about him it sounds eerily similar to people talking about Tavon Austin. When people are excited about using you EVERYWHERE(as a slot receiver, and on special teams, and at RB) it makes me wonder if they are having troubled figuring out just where exactly you fit in ANYWHERE.

4) Gore left and they may have known Turbin was getting suspended. Doesn't surprise me all that much they would bring in at least two guys on day 3 of the draft considering how many carries Gore had by himself.

He said Indy losing all those games last year was actually do to terrible conservative 4th quarter coaching. The Colts were the only team in 27 years to lose 7 games that they were winning at half time. As a matter of fact, the Colts were leading at half in 9 games last year and lost 7 of them. Even crazier, the Colts were leading going into the 4th quarter in 9 games. 

His case is the Colts were a lot better than anyone realizes last year because awful teams don't lead in the 4th quarter in 9 games. They lost so many of those games because the coaches went ultra conservative in the 4th quarter. He thinks with or even without Luck, the Colts are going to surprise a lot of people this year.

That is pretty shocking. 

I thought people were crazy to think IND was a possible SB contender in '18 but if that's true and with the possibility of Luck returning I guess it's not as outlandish as I thought. Still, I expect both HOU/TEN to be better and JAX is one of the teams to beat in the entire conference let alone division.

I heard that stat a couple months back from a podcast with a guy who bets on the NFL a lot, and it shocked me too. Apparently the colts win total was a popular "over" bet early this year for that reason.

Football Perspective has RB heat maps for last year, showing the percent of carries that went for at least __ yards. On average, 80% of carries gained positive yardage. Unfortunately the post only shows the data for RBs with 100+ attempts, which doesn't include Mack.

The Indianapolis Star believes the Colts' touch leader in the backfield could vary "game to game."

Per reporter Stephen Holder, it's varied "day to day" so far in camp. "What keeps them on their toes right now is that they have to learn everything," coach Frank Reich said. "But as we get more towards the games, we will be game-plan specific. ... Certain guys have a little better feel on gap scheme runs. Other runners, as you know, have a better feel for zone scheme runs and you just kind of gear guys towards what they’re best." That would be similar to the approach Reich's Eagles employed in 2017. Right now, the Colts "back to own" is to be determined. The only moment of summer clarity might come in the third preseason game.

Blowing games is nothing new for Indy.  Suck for Luck, anyone?

I think an improved OL and Luck's return will help the Colts surprise.  I'm a lot less confident if Luck can't stay healthy.

It’s actually incredibly rare for that to happen. The 2017 Colts were the first team in 27 years to lose at least 7 games where they were winning at half. I highly doubt the coaches was trying to lose last year knowing that it would certainly mean they all lost their jobs. Even with backup QB who was acquired after the start of the regular season, the Colts should been about a 500 team. I like them to surprise this year with or without Luck.

Marlon Mack exited the Colts' preseason opener with a hamstring injury.

The extent is currently unknown, but hamstring injuries are always worth monitoring throughout the preseason once they occur. As expected, Mack started the game with Andrew Luck and the first-string offense, receiving a flip from Luck on the Colts' very first play. Robert Turbin came in the game once Mack exited.

Colts coach Frank Reich said it's "no slam dunk" Marlon Mack is ready for the start of the season.

Mack has been out with a hamstring injury the last two weeks and is borderline questionable for Week 1. The team remains hopeful he can practice prior to their home opener versus the Bengals. If Mack can't go, duties would likely fall to the combination of rookies Nyheim Hines, Jordan Wilkins, and journeyman Christine Michael, the latter who's taken reps with the first-string offense during Mack's absence. Wilkins has continued to look the most impressive of the bunch, totaling 13 carries for 47 yards (3.6 YPC) on limited snaps in the preseason.

Speaking Tuesday, Colts coach Frank Reich said Marlon Mack (hamstring) has made "good progress."

Specifically, "over the past two days." Speaking five days ago, Reich had said it was "no slam dunk" Mack was ready for the opener. Reich did not speak to Mack's Week 1 odds on Tuesday, but they would seem to be improving. The Colts' backfield is going to be a major early-season headache. Were Mack to sit, Christine Michael and Jordan Wilkins would probably both get early-down run.

Beat writer Stephen Holder "would be surprised if he comes close to playing" Week 1 against the Bengals. It's likely going to be the Jordan Wilkins-Christine Michael show in the backfield against Geno Atkins and friends.

Marlon Mack (hamstring) returned to practice on Thursday.

He hadn't practiced in almost a month. Despite his improvement, Mack remains a long shot for Sunday's opener against the Bengals. Fifth-round rookie Jordan Wilkins figures to start in Week 1, though his starting tenure may be a short one with Mack on the mend. With so many moving parts to keep track of, it's probably best to avoid Indy's backfield for fantasy purposes.

Marlon Mack will test out his injured hamstring in pre-game warmups prior to Sunday's Week 1 matchup against the Bengals.

As will teammate Anthony Castonzo. Mack and Castonzo appear to be game-time decisions, though the tea leaves suggest neither will play as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport implied both will need to show "significant improvement" to get the green light. Fifth-round rookie Jordan Wilkins would be the likely starter if Mack can't go.

The Colts will use some combination of Jordan Wilkins, Christine Michael, and Nyheim Hines at running back against the Bengals. Mack's late-week return to practice does suggest he should have a chance to return for Week 2.

Obviously depending on who is available and your needs.  Mack, when healthy, can produce and he will be given the lion's share of the work.  Hard to imagine dropping him since there is upside.

Mack will make his season debut Sunday after missing Week 1 with a hamstring pull. He figures to lead the Colts' backfield committee. With Mack back from injury, Christine Michael was made a healthy scratch.
