Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (1 Viewer)

+1 on grandparents who used the term "colored" (southern Indiana/northern Kentucky).  My mom's dad did live long enough (almost 99!) to gradually move over to "Black," but the rest of them used the word until the day they died.

But it was so much better than the n word that so many used, esp. in the south, I guess

Yes, could have been worse.  I don't think any of them did it with malice; it was just the word they'd grown up with and everyone else in the area used.  At some point they should have known better, of course.

My sister and I just had a conversation last week where we remembered a car drive when we were pretty young where my dad (fairly progressive guy from CA) was arguing with my grandpa (my mom’s dad, evangelical conservative from MI). They were having a heated argument about affirmative action and my grandfather ended the conversation by stating that “they” shouldn’t even be allowed to go to non-black colleges. Was pretty shocking to hear that, even at a fairly young age.

My older cat has started taking dumps wherever she feels like it.  And not as protest, we keep up with her litter box.  But now the first thing I have to do in the morning is look for landmines.  This is a nice compliment to the younger cat, who just barfs up hairballs everywhere.

I think what stigmatized the word, which really does not seem inherently bad or derrogatory, was the widespread Jim Crow uses in puclic areas, "Colored Only."

now those cats, I hate.

our fatter cat is too lazy to go all the way into the litter... so she walks in, and then pees out the back onto the floor. I'm trying to figure out how to make the litter box go to 11 to rectify.

interesting turn of events in here last couple days..

now that we're having to scrape some tough picks, people don't seem to be so gung ho.

yeah. it's a weird thing people do to try to be funny, I guess. I hate cats! hahahahahaha. like I said- either phobic, or an #######.
My first/only cat growing up was a major psychopath. That combined with some severe allergies to cats never gave me a chance.

I had a girlfriend with a couple cats. Both were really sweet and affectionate (the cats and the girlfriend). When I’d stay over there (look at me), I’d inevitably wake up with one of the cats sleeping across my neck and I could barely open my eyes or breathe. The things we do for love.

My one-eyed broken-tailed rescue cat will not use a litter box. We're in a neighborhood of 2.5 acre parcels adjacent to millions of acres of Mojave Desert BLM. Nothing fancy, 90% un-landscaped desert. This cat crosses the property, goes to the neighbors and poops in a sand hill in sight of the neighbor's dog run. Literally, I think to agitate the dogs. Far as I know the neighbor has no idea.

  marking their territory with attempted murder.

my son has been around cats since birth, but has always been a bit scared of them. dogs too, although we've never had them here. I wish we could get a dog- love them- but our small city pad is no place for one and my son would probably run away. Although... now that I write that out, we'd at least have more room for a dog. win/win.

I've been listening to the RS 500 playlist on Spotify.

Even most of the "classics"... pretty rough for me to listen to- just heard all of them way too much that they're almost parodies of themselves at this point. eg- I want to stab my ears every time I hear any version of Proud Mary.

13.24 - Nicki Minaj - "Super Bass" (#426)

This is a purely defensive pick, as I've been waiting for every other possible replacement from this category to get picked before taking this.  Once 50 went, it was Nicki time.  I assume we all knew it was only a matter of time until I took this one anyway.

I have no idea how this is in the Rolling Stone Top 500.  But it's a good bubblegum pop rap hybrid that still holds up pretty well a decade (!) on.

First usage of the pink font color in honor of Pink Friday.

I've never thought about why I like this song so much but those quotes above nail it. It's relatively minimal in terms of production, huge drum beat aided by lots of synths and horns. Maybe it's the hip-hop version of a Spoon song. This section of the draft is getting thin for me, so I better jump on it now.

13.18 - In Da Club - 50 Cent (#444)

Fiddy isn't much of a rapper but this song is still a floor filler

My cats barf up stuff all the time, though it's been better since we switched their food a few months ago. One is good with the litterbox, one doesn't like it and often stands outside of it while sticking her butt in it (occasionally she misses), and one (the male) is usually fine but sometimes (despite being fixed) likes to take a whiz on a leg of the standing desk which one of the litterboxes is under.

My grandparents on one side were not racist, probably because they were academics and from NJ. The ones on the other side were elitists but not really racists -- however, one of my uncles was not particularly enlightened, especially when it came to telling jokes.

And that catches me up on this morning's discussions.

I like cats too, but I hate litter boxes so much, I'm fine with the excuse that I am allergic to cats.
my cat's more like an occasional visitor than a pet. born feral. prefers the desert. comes home to eat. doesn't play nice with strangers. i'll try to get a pic of his face if he doesn't scratch mine while trying.

Neither of those have been taken. As long as you didn't repeat a segment, you're good.

Had to work for a while, now catching up.

Mrs. R selects:

Billy Joel - Scenes From An Italian Restaurant  (#324)

Atomic Punk skipped since he missed the last pick.
