Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (2 Viewers)

I am super-excited to get this happiest of Happy Greens and also to add another woman to my playlist.  I think I've taken more women in this draft than any other.  That probably means like four of them, but it's a start!  (I probably should have kept a list of my picks.)

Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog  (#318)

@cosjobs
I remember reading an article and the guy asking her how she felt getting paid $100 for the rights to Hound Dog, when Elvis made millions. She replied to the effect, "Well I'm alive with my $100."

😃  Dolly Parton has talked about in the past that Elvis wanted to do a cover of her "I Will Always Love You," but he and his manager wanted half the publishing rights to the song. Dolly told them no, so Elvis never recorded it.

@krista4  Are you going to go ahead and do your last pick since you and I are the only ones left in the grouping, and you go before I do? End the suspense!

Sure, I'm heading out soon anyway, so I'll end the suspense.  :)

Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

I love both songs that are left so looked at which would fit my mix better.  I then realized my mix is a disaster.  :lmao:   So instead, since I'm in Louisville visiting family, I decided to take this one in honor of my Grandpa who died in 2019.  He loooooooved Hank Williams.

312 / Walk on By / Isaac Hayes 1969

So happy this made it back to me one more time. I would have gladly taken it long ago. Issac was one of my favorite soul singers after Redding, Pickett, etc. Unlike Stax and Motown of the time, his style was labeled "symphonic soul." In retrospect, that doesn't sound like something I'd like, but I'd be very very wrong. Wriiten by Burt Bacharach (?!) and backed by the Bar-Kays. @Uruk-Hai, is this song too long for you?

Well it looks like I can take my last two picks ...

19.22 The Crystals - Da Doo Run Run (#366)

Fun little ditty that isn’t Cher. Somehow I hear that Cher song at least once a month and then it gets stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

20.04 Megan Thee Stallion - Savage (#438)

This could be the Top 500,000 songs list and this song would still not make it for me. I was really hoping not to have any songs with the N word in it but alas, here I am.

This has been a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me dip my toe into FFA Music world. I’m nowhere near the aficionados most of you are but I still love my music and learning from all of you music draft regulars.

Off to tackle the weekend honey do list.

And since DOug B is my only rival for my final group and he picks after me, I think its kosher to make that pick now?

I was between this one and Hound Dog, but wasn't sure the 12-minute song with orchestration would fit in my playlist well.  I'm glad my not taking it landed it with you!

This song takes you on a ride, and it's a good ride.

I love this song. Had it all lined up a bunch of rounds ago, but for some reason went a different direction. Had the record and loved it and him.

Saw him live with Eephus and my mutual friend at a tiny club in SF called the I-beam..early 90s. Iirc, we were literally the only people there...which could be cool. But was a bit awkward. I felt like we had to perform as well, since we were the only reaction they were getting. My friends response to this was to flirt big time with screamin' Jay. Provoked a fantastic performance out of him, but caused the show to stop a bit early. How could we know that the bass player happened to be his girlfriend who went into a fit of rage and full blown, knock down fight with Jay mid song before storming off the stage and ending the set. Needless to say. We skidaddled outta there pdq.

This song is its own genre. It's one of the reason squares hated rock & roll, and it's ####### glorious.

No, because it's not boring

No, because it's not boring
It goes places...good places...and takes you with him.

That Aaliyah song I ended up with is only a few minutes, but goes nowhere. I was bored about 30secs in. I like beats and rhythm and minimalism, but this one set up the hook in the first seconds and just repeats it until the end of the song. No dynamics, no shifts, nothing. Unless there's some kind of cultural importance to the song- and I get that she died tragically and young- I really don't see or understand the significance or worth to include it in any top 500.

Maybe tasker or 80s can offer some insight.

I've updated the first post I think with all the playlists, but if I missed someone while quickly catching up the past couple of days, please let me know.

@Uruk-Hai, I'm putting together cos's playlist.  Would you like me to cobble yours together, too, since you don't have Spotify?  If so, just send me the order you want the songs in.
Someone was sorting the playlist when I went in there to copy & paste the list here, so I ran away. I was going to put them in reverse RS order. If it's too much a pain, don't sweat it

??

I get that Hot Buttered Soul sounded different (Hayes wouldn't make the album without complete creative control), but its hard to think of someone who was more responsible for the Stax sound than Hayes.  He was their chief songwriter and producer and the Bar-Kays were the house band.

I apologize for not really ordering my Playlist in a way that makes sense.  I don't think you can do it on the mobile app and I don't have the full PC client version because I work off a firm-provided computer.

You can do it on mobile just go to the playlist>click on the “…”>click “edit”> put your finger on a song for a second and you can drag it up or down.

I'm the other one who picks in this group, not Doug B.

May I have this, please?  The other thing is purely offensive.

19.24 - Juvenile - "Back That ### Up" (#478)

Simply a classic.  Crude, vulgar, catchy as all hell.

Wife and I almost used this as the "wedding introductions" song for when they announce the wedding party during the reception.  Called an audible like 3 days before the ceremony.....just couldn't do it in front of the parents and grandparents.  We settled on Wang Chung "Everybody Have Fun Tonight".  Probably a better decision.

Fun fact, while not the originator of the phrase, this song marked the first time the phrase "drop it like it's hot" hit mainstream.  A 17-year old Lil Wayne popularized the phrase with his final verse on this one.

Cash money records takin over from the 9-9 into 2000

20.02 - Billie Eilish - "bad guy" (#178)

I'll make my last pick, hopefully no one minds, because it's the only one left in this category.  I've almost-drafted this one for the past 6-7 rounds, as @Northern Voice can probably attest, so I am pleased to take it here in the final round.

She is arguably first real elite artist of the Zoomer generation, and a sign of what we can expect from music superstardom from the younger generation.  This is a catchy, dance-y blend of pop, trap, almost-goth.  It's a fusion of some of the most popular genres at the moment, mixed with the dark angst that comes with a new generation coming of age.

This album is great, as is her new one from a few months ago.  And she's already looking like a multi-talented artist across more artistic mediums (media?) than just music.  This is the future, and the sky's the limit.  I can't wait to see where she - and the rest of the next generation - takes music into the future.

Unfortunately, all the video evidence of walking moneybags/supposed Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer Backin' Dat ### Up for America while campaigning in South Carolina appears to have disappeared off the internet.

of course i can

19.25 Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance 412

20.1 Cher - Believe 337

I thought Buffalo Stance was another song, Neneh another artist. Actually quite pleased to take that one.

There are only two songs left in the block I'm compelled to pick from. I go before the other person in order, so I might as well go ahead and select...

Round 20.07 - Craig Mack - Flava In Your Ear (422) - 1994

This song is actually really well-known for its intra-label remix starring Biggie and others. It was one of the first times that a label had released a song then released another version of the same song with guest rappers and a slightly altered beat. It was Bad Boy's first of this nature and paved the way for other remixes, which became a standard hip hop practice.

That leaves Yo Mama with RUN D.M.C., which is a fine and fitting choice for him.

Actually, Yo Mama...your choice. Whichever one you want. I more just wanted to talk about the significance of the remix in this instance. It's probably why the song made the list, even though they didn't include the appropriate version.

Thanks to everyone for participating and to k4 for running the draft. It was fun.
