Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (1 Viewer)

I listen to a lot of comedy on my satellite radio while in the car. I so wish they would put the year of the comedy routine in the title so I know whether I can laugh at the jokes or whether I should cringe that someone is still running with those sorts of jokes
It's gotta be tough to be a comic these days with almost everything off limits because it might offend someone and get you fired. Pretty soon it will all be Dad and knock-knock jokes :(

Picking the only PJ song on here was kind of a no brainer for me at this point but it got me thinking about an obvious omission on the list.......how the hell did Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog not make it?
Not even close to the worst omission.  How did "Smoke on the Water" not make it?

Have 2 blocks I'm resigned to just getting whatever is left because I don't like any of them . Have 2 block that has a few songs I really love but nothing I hate so may do the same there. There are 3 blocks where I really only like 1-2 of what's left so hoping I can get at least a song from those.

Two biggest problem today...

We take ourselves too seriously.....lighten up Francis!

I mean I guess, but when you look at what they chose for Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder....Black hole sun, and Alive.  Two of the most important rock bands, and vocalists in rock history.....Cornell is arguably the best rock vocalist ever, imo....Hunger Strike has both of em!  And it's a great song, that had plenty of widespread play......that Temple of the Dog album is so ####### good too!

Black Hole Sun being the only Cornell song on the list is a slap in the face, imo.......should've chosen something off of Badmotorfinger.

Edit to add.....I think I might be taking this list too seriously...I need to lighten up!  Lol

I’ll go with #179 Pink Floyd “Comfortably Numb” It was my #1 song on the 1979 list.

So far, my dumb “strategy” has worked: going in order from the top of the list, I managed to find at least one song in each group of 25 that I love and I’ve drafted it. That’s going to change fairly soon I imagine…

I think this is a universal strategy at this point

:thanks:

That was a lot of work.  Thanks for taking the reins.
No sweat. It gave me something to do during the Jacksonville/Cincinnati game given that D.J. Chark, who I roster in a bunch of formats, got hurt on the second play and sadly fractured his ankle. Awful for him, awful for me, too. I was able to grit my teeth and find solace in data entry, which is no small thing, really. Menial tasks. Mind elsewhere.

I really want to do a Footballguys Next 500 Songs exercise after this. We did a similar thing back in 2012 with Ultimate Classic Rock's Top 100 Classic Rock songs of all time (artists were limited to one song, solo artists counted separate from their former bands).

Footballguys "Next Hundred Classic Rock Songs" nomination thread (5/1/2012)

Footballguys' "Next Hundred Classic Rock Songs" Countdown (5/23/2012)

For a "Next 500 Songs" list where repeats from the same artists are allowed, I might have to tweak the nominations/voting process, though. Could do it the exact same way and maybe limit artists to three songs or something like that. Maybe just two.

Or it could be a draft...

While we have a pause, I need two starters this week from this sorry group (thanks AJ Brown/Gus Edwards), full PPR one has to be a WR...

  • Rondale Moore
  • Devin Singletary
  • Curtis Samuel if he plays
  • Jalen Reagor
  • Mark Ingram
  • Nick Westbrook-Ihhike
  • Austin Hooper
I'm down 20.6 already (Robinson), thoughts?

So good....Gilmour at his best

I'd be down for that

Rondale Moore and you can take that to the 276 lowest point total bank brohan.

Or Curtis Samuel. Dyami Brown ran route after route after route with Washington.

I say we bring back Andrew "Dice" Clay. The audience got on that plane. They knew what they were getting into. I say, "let 'em die."

And that's all I have to say about that.
Did he die, or get cxled?  Or just drift into obscurity?  The Dice man was great....low brow for sure, but the nursery rhymes still crack me up

I'm ####### around between him and Airplane! and making a really abstract point. Dice was so bad, he got cancelled in '91 because the character he was playing was offensive to be playing in the first place. He was making fun of Italian stereotyping by being a walking Italian stereotype, and...

Well there was a lot wrong with Clay. My point is the audience loved it unironically -- they didn't even get he was playing an Italian stereotype -- and shouldn't be given the benefit of hindsight. They adored Clay and then turned on him.

It was like the time Borat did the "Throw The Jew Down A Well" song in Phoenix and got everybody to join in, enthusiastically. That's why everything I think of this world is ever-evolving. Things that I personally don't think are real are still very real.

Id go with Reagor and Singletary. Moore is boom or bust but could also be good if you get points for return TDs.

Watch Peyton and Eli.  It's a lot better than watching the regular guys on that game.

I liked the footage of Lebron on his HS football team.  The tops of the others' helmets only came up to his shoulders.  He was in the Land of the Short People.

Joe asked the question: How good would LeBron have been at football? Interesting discussion. I said he would be at least Division I, and likely a pro at some level.

eta* And people love Peyton and Eli. I liked it for the moments I watched it, but then it got too schticky for my taste. I get serious about my football viewing, much more so than the average viewer. That's actually a fault, I know.

The reason not to do a draft is that there needs to be some consensus -- we want some level of agreement for what songs make up the list. Also, nominations, polling, then ordering allows us to create an "unknown" list that gets rolled out progressively.

This seems pretty easy to un-FUBAR, but I'm reluctant to do it sans permission.

EDIT:  I did NOT FUBAR in the first place, but I was the guy who prematurely turned Waterloo Sunset red on day one.

The truth is coming out!

OK, I'm in front of my computer now, catching up on everything.  I can take over spreadsheet duties* again.

*Entering picks, not fixing anything.

I think that grouping is the best of them all. Your pick and 2 others from here are in my top 25

Seems like an elitist way to keep me from making By-Tor and the Snow Dog song number 501.
I thought you were kidding about some modern rap song and then I turned white and went "prog."

Ewwwww...gross. Teenage girls everywhere have changed, but they still hate prog.

Not surprised.....i just lost track of him and I don't watch much news

Outrage is typically manufactured anyway.....comedians should be exempt from being cxled, period...... I mean unless they really cross a line....but stereotypes should be allowed....again, we take ourselves too seriously. It's what I've always loved about South Park.  Make fun of everything, and everyone.....this is the way

Nick Westbrook and Reagor

Or maybe that is a modern rap song an I'm the one holding deeply felt feelings about prog. And the teenage girls around where I am all wear "Floyd" shirts, so maybe I'm just wrong here.

argh! who took Pavement!???!

a couple other options left in this group that I genuinely like, but the rest... bleh. and even thought it got played to death, this one stands above and was one of my favorites from the block to begin with- glad it fell. Always makes me feel good and bopping my head- funky pop bliss.

8?- Daft Punk- Get Lucky (2013) #465

For some reason, years ago a friend and I chose a person every week and then were tasked with trying to work that person's name into a conversation every day, with one having to be a work meeting.  One week we did Andrew "Dice" Clay.

Argh! Who took Daft Punk?

I took Pavement. I knew it was a Floppo snipe, but I'd been leaving it for you since Day Two, so I finally went ahead. I love that song, even if the narrator isn't too faithful in his assessment of the world and, um, "babedom" in general.

Probably my favorite moment of the Sochi Olympics was when they had a Red Army choir come out and do Get Lucky.  And it's all these very severe, serious looking guys who you figure have tortured a bunch of dudes in the Gulag.  And by the middle of the song they're all kind of toe-tapping and semi-smiling.  "YOUR DECADENT WESTERN MUSIC IS TOO COMPELLING!!!"

figured it was Marco.

but yeah- you threw out that warning a while ago... figured that was the pick you referenced, although there are several others that also fit.

regardless.
