Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (3 Viewers)

I like how there's a "Sheet 6," which is the fourth sheet and has nothing on it.  Also the random numbers in column F of the song list sheet.

Similarly, I’ve seen two posters here say Smoke on the Water was a big omission. I don’t see that at all. Cool enough song but nothing special at all IMO. Very standard 70s kind of rock song to me.

His whole "thing" never appealed to me.  I get his rapping talent......he can rhyme at break neck speed.....woopity doo!.....it still sounds like #### to my ears.....and the whole scrawny Lil tough guy thing always seemed like a joke to me.

Withers' career trajectory was pretty incredible. Dude was working as an airplane mechanic, I think, when some unreleased recordings of his were discovered. I'm going from memory and have to re-read about him. All-time soul voice.

Uruk-Hai and Pip are the resident house experts on Bill Withers. Know quite a bit about him, actually.

Kiss is one of my guilty pleasures.  Grew up listening to em on vinyl....I get why rock and roll all night made the list, but is there a more overplayed song?  I would've taken one of Cold Gin, Deuce, Strutter, Detroit Rock City, 100,000 years, Hotter than Hell, Do you Love me?......in fact now I wanna fire up Double Platinum!  

I was made for loving you is ok I guess but yea the whole disco thing......meh....Paul Stanley always seemed like he coulda been all disco all the time

EDIT: No! Paul Stanley actually laid down that bass line in the studio. Gene Simmons just did some backing vocals.

I dig the instrumentation, but they're way too young to sing those lyrics credibly. Sounds like a Kids Bop version.

 
This kid may be on the airwaves one day. My phone takes awful pictures (it could be me).  When we were leaving the Merlefest after the last act (TTB) on that Friday night, we encountered this kid standing beside the sidewalk.  He was staying at the campground that is directly beside the festival.  He asked us if he wanted to hear a song. We asked him what he played, and he said old country. He had a paper plate on the ground for any donations towards his artistry. Basically someone at the campground was letting their kid panhandle.  Anyway, he was fantastic. He sang and played a Johnny Cash song, and he had kid vocals, but his guitar work was amazing. A woman that was nearby walked over and talked to us. She said the night before, one of Sturgill Simpson's band mates had walked by and saw the kid, and then went to a bus and got Sturgill, and Sturgill came over and played a song with the kid. She showed us on her phone the two playing together. We asked the kid about it, and he said, "Yeah, it was neat."  The kid can play that guitar.

I didn't analyze mine that closely but my newest song is from '92 and all the other stuff 60's/70's......crusty rocker.... ✅

8.22 Lovely Day -- Bill Withers (#402, bloc 401-425)

This is one of several blocs I could have gone with, I've got a few with about the same # of "no hesitation" picks. This one had 12 left after starting with 19. So this pick is more of an "I didn't want to get sniped" thing. It's the last Withers on the board and I couldn't take him in the dual-album draft because I didn't think any of his post-1974 albums were a fit for that. 

This was his biggest hit after he switched labels and incorporated some of the sounds of the time into his work. It's one of the breeziest tracks ever recorded and is perfect for the lovely fall day we have today in NJ.

I thought this was taken already, but my memory ain't what it used to be. In any case, the singer is awesome as always. But what I also like about the records from her classic period is that they are full of neat instrumental hooks. The guitar player should have gotten a "featuring....." line for this one

It's funny how it kinda works out right?  I've woke up last two mornings, got on and it was my turn, and hadn't been for more than like 15 minutes or something

Pickings are looking a bit slim in this group so I’m feeling fortunate to get one of those blueprint songs. Everything we think of as rock and roll is on display here, maybe for the first time.

I was just reading a short article on one of my favorite episodes "Long Term Parking."  It was from season 5 regarding Adriana.  Then I wondered if you had finished the series. I'm looking forward to the prequel.

Oh, I just looked up which one that was.  I see it's the one where I kept screaming "Noooooo, don't do it!" at the screen.

Some of the acting in Seasons 5 and 6 has been over-the-top phenomenal, even against usual Sopranos standards.  Not sure which episode it was, but there was a scene where Tony said to Uncle Junior, "Why didn't you love me?" and it was one of the most heartbreaking moments I've seen on TV.

It's hard to overstate how influential this song was (along with Chuck's subsequent hits). It pretty much boils down to this: if you like guitar based rock, you can draw a straight line from this record to whatever your favorite is and have to bridge no gaps. 

Where I don't think Berry gets enough credit is as a lyricist. He's inventing slang in every song that's still being used today, and he's funny as hell.
